Solid luxury hotel with breathtaking views of the old city from top floor bar and restaurant. This is a very good location for first time visitor, as the surrounding neighborhood is very enchanting with plenty of great restaurant choices, and it’s slightly away from the nearby tourist fray across the river. The subway station is just a couple blocks away. Rooms and beds were luxuriously appointed, and breakfast was high quality with lots of nice selections, well worth it. We enjoyed the third floor lounge with an outdoor fire pit on chilly evenings, and (complimentary) decent wine/snacks.

Well worth a visit this ex-school hotel with admirable scenery from the bar and the restaurant. A cozy guest room with separate bath and toilet let us feel at home. Guests can enjoy open-air fire on patio, chatting and drinking free wine in the evening. If the timing is right, various Japanese traditional arts like Nogaku or Shimabara-Oiran show are performed in a huge traditional Tatami-mat room.

Don't think twice - basically a perfect stay. Check in was smooth - leave your bags while you explore the city and come back for check-in which is on floor 8. Great view from there and exception service / venue. We were upgraded so to be fair we aren't sure of what the standard room looks like but if our room is anything to go on..... Room was flawless, large and all the conveniences you could imagine. Huge bed, great Japanese style bathroom with separate dressing room etc. Views from our room where great, it is in a perfect position and we can't fault our stay at all. (We did not take the breakfast option but I heard it was quite expensive but did not confirm this).

What can I say about this hotel but pure perfection! We had a stunning Cinema room which was so luxurious, spacious and stunningly appointed with everything you could need in a room. The bathroom supplies alone were amazing! We had a great view of Kyoto streets and felt very lucky to have chosen such a beautiful room. It was exactly what we needed after feeling quite cramped in Tokyo where the hotels tend to be a lot smaller. The bed was like sleeping on a cloud and it was large and spacious with beautiful soft bedding and lush pillows. The hotel also had an amazing bar area (LOBBY LOUNGE AND BAR) overlooking the stunning views of Kyoto. Which had beautiful cocktails and a large array of food and drinks. The Hotel also has a lounge area ( Lounge and Patio) which offers free wine and nibbles through the afternoon and early evening). The Anchor restaurant offers the most incredible Japanese breakfast (as well as other choices) which blew us away. So tasty and unique to give us the whole experience. (They even prepared a vegetarian option for me). Probably the best thing though was the opportunity to do a free yoga class (which was needed after much walking and many flights) and we also got to see a wonderful show held by the hotel which featured a Geisha where we got to see her perform and ask questions about their lives and the culture. It was truly a unique and incredible experience that I would have paid to see. So generous and memorable.

This is a really, clean, friendly, well-located hotel with relatively large (premium "classy") rooms. The restaurant and bar had a reasonable range of drinks and food with very helpful courteous staff. The hotel is very well located within walking distance of all Kyoto's major attractions, shops and train stations. The only minor thing to be aware of is the hotel is on a street that comes alive late at night on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. We were woken in the early hours of these nights/mornings by groups of men heading home from "girly" bars across the road. This is the only reason I can't give the Hotel 5 stars.

Lovely hotel with relaxed atmosphere, exemplary service and excellent location. Our bedroom was excellent. Magnificent bar and views and really excellent restaurant ( the best meal we had in Japan which is saying something given the generally high standard everywhere).

The room was great, spacious and stylish, though there were very long hallways. The view of the canal, the busy nightlife district below, and the kabuki theater was wonderful. We had two large windows in our room and kept one set of curtains undrawn to let the natural light in, in the morning. The bathtub was great for soaking after showering in the adjacent shower area. The toilet (water closet) was in its own room and separated from the main sink but had its own additional small sink. A pocket door also separated the sleeping area from the bathroom and vestibule, which is nice when one person needs to get up early and not disturb anyone else. Bathroom amenities were good but not as plentiful as some high-end Japan hotels. The room, although a good size, had virtually no storage or place to keep your clothes except to hang them, which was inconvenient to say the least. We had to clear out a drawer containing the coffee maker and teapot to make room for our essentials. Everything else stayed in the suitcases. Fortunately, there was enough floor space to keep it out of the way during our stay. The lounge on the 3rd floor was a great place to recharge after a long day of sightseeing. It offered rice cracker snacks, marshmallows for toasting (when it was cold enough to start the fire pit), and free wine and soft drinks. The service here was so-so, but it was a lovely amenity all the same. The location is wonderful for sightseeing. Unfortunately, no pickup or shuttle service was offered from the train/bus station. The lobby, which is within a historic 1920s school building, was poorly utilized as one could barely discern they were in a historic building. Some old photographs and signage on its history would be a plus for architecture and history buffs. Also, the main entrance to the hotel and lobby was very confusing and we had to circle around a few times initially to find it. There were a couple of lovely events scheduled both inside and outside the hotel during our stay but we were unable to attend as they were held during the day when almost anyone staying at the hotel would be out sightseeing. Perhaps they are for the community? If not, they should consider holding them late afternoon or early evening so more guests could take advantage of these cultural bonuses. The front desk staff service was surprisingly poor. We were told there was no concierge and the information given to us on sights and restaurants was mediocre with mediocre English communication skills. This was shocking for a four- or five-star hotel. Several of the staff who helped us had name tags indicating they were all trainees, but someone senior should have been on hand to help. That being said, we enjoyed the location (by the canal and close to shopping/dept stores) and got to feel the vibe for Kyoto. It was very busy on the weekends and the entrance is on the relatively "quieter" street but noise was never a problem in the room. Many great restaurants in the area, small and traditional places that sat 6-10 customers, all various cuisines (even Mexican!). Do honor the last seating at the more popular places as we were shut out in the late evenings.

Besides its perfect location and beautifully reused school building, the Gate Hotel Kyoto shines because of its extraordinary level of service from every member of its staff. From assistance with shipping our luggage to the restaurant servers to the mixologists in the bar, every person performed flawlessly and treated us as though we were the only guests in the hotel. The the public areas and guest rooms are spotless. The traditional Japanese breakfast was delicious and the Noh performance on the firepit patio was a real treat. We highly recommend the Gate Hotel for your next stay in Kyoto.

Overall, the hotel is good enough, as a perfect location, not so expensive price, and even better if you are a fan of Cardcaptor Sakura. Personally, the most important reason for me to choose this hotel this time is that it is modified from an elementary school, even though if you walk in the hotel now, you even cannot imagine except the outside look of the hotel. You can feel it used to be a school. More importantly, this elementary school is the model for Tomoe school. The location of the hotel is great, kawaramachi is a great location not only it is close to gion, but also you can feel the quiet atmosphere in the morning but enjoying late night life at night at the same time. However, kawaramachi station is kind of hard for traveller with large suitcase as it is very hard to find an lift or escalator in the subway. You might need to consider how to move your suitcase up and down. The room is large with very interesting room planning, which is kind of hard to see in other hotels. However, at least the room I stayed in did not provide a suitcase stand so I had to put my suitcase on the ground, which was annoying. For breakfast, there are three choices, with 2 Western and 1 Japanese. However, the Japanese one is in limited order so you have to wake up early to try it. On the other hand, they only have three choices with a few buffets, which means if you stay in the hotel for more than 3 days, you will be lake of choices, which is unbelievable. Personally, if I stay in the hotel next time, I would prefer to go to Family Mart to buy some food for breakfast instead of choosing 1 from the 3 choices, even though they are delicious. Also, when you check out, you will deposit your luggage in the lobby, which is on the 8th floor. However, you will only need to take your luggage at the ground floor. You might have to wait for a while because the hotel staff on the ground floor is a little hard to find. Overall, it is a good hotel I might stay for a second time. However, I definitely hope the breakfast choices could increase in the future.
