We were a group of 6 people staying at the Hotel Mitsui on a trek through Japan. Suffice it to say, that the group was all pleased that we stayed here. Our initial check in process was a bit bumpy (no tea service) as it was clear everyone was checking into the hotel for a holiday weekend. However, within 30 minutes, we were all on our way to our rooms.

Overall, the hotel and the rooms are designed in muted tones and a modern zen vibe. Where other hotels would simply have drywall covered with pictures, the Mitsui has clearly thought about every surface. We were in a room that looked out to the central garden, which is beautiful. The room had a nice long marble bench at the entrance which was nice for putting shoes on or setting things down to pack / unpack. Further in the room, there is a bar area, desk area and a nice long padded bench by the window. Controls for the room are near the bed and you can dim lights or raise and lower blinds with ease.

The bathroom is a very clever design with two pocket door entrances, offering a closet area, double sink, a wet room with tub and shower and rom for the toilet. The room for the toilet is wide and very peaceful. Of course, it comes with the fancy Toto Neorest toilet that raises and lowers the seat automatically, has a heated seat, has a bidet feature and more. The shower offers both a hand held and a rain head that with a fine spray. Bathroom toiletries are crafted for the Hotel Mitsui. Of course, robes were available (just ask if you need a different size).

Let’s talk about sleeping…. The bed was among the most comfortable that I have ever tried (firm, with just the right amount of softness). Down pillows and a duvet complete the scene. And course, should you not like your pillow, there is a pillow menu. The rooms at the Mitsui are quiet with blackout shades. At night, gentle nightlights illuminate the path to the bathroom. In all, the sleep experience is well thought out and devine.

One of the stand out features of the hotel would be the Thermal Springs in the basement. The Thermal Springs are a modern version of a traditional Japanese onsen. Access is open to everyone in the hotel, but the number of people permitted in is managed to in more than 14 people at a time. You have to call ahead to make sure there is space, but in our case, we were always able to get in. Anyone who out touring in Kyoto, should make time in their busy schedule to visit the Thermal Springs between their tours and dinner - it is a great way to wash off the city and relax before dinner - very civilized.

This review is particularly fun for me as our stay at the Mitsui ultimately caused us to break up with our travel agent. He was SO insistent that we stay at the Ritz , he could not imagine trying something new like the Mitsui (nor was he willing o have his team check it out). In the end, I feel vindicated, we loved our stay at the Mitsui and would happily return.

Best Hotel in Kyoto! It was our wedding Anniversary and with my Titanium status, the hotel was very accommodating and upgraded us to a suite room. The service at this hotel is top notch, the breakfast was excellent, location is good but we mostly did taxi or Uber. It is right across from Nijo Castle.
The rooms are big and the king size bed was very comfortable. The bathroom is decent sized and the shower / bath area are excellent. The shades are black out and rooms are quiet from any outside noise. Airconditioning / heating work just fine.
Marriott has several hotels in Kyoto and though the Ritz Carlton is another that rates high, The Mitsui is only 3 plus years old and very up to date.
The check in process was fantastic while Uemi san brought us tea as well while we waited.
If you are looking for a high end, clean, best service hotel in Kyoto, I highly recommend The Mitsui.
I will be staying here again!

I recently spent two nights at this new luxury property in Kyoto. Besides the excellent location and all the bells and whistles you would expect, the inner garden and open terrace lobby made the experience that much more intimate. And breakfast on the terrace with the morning light and birds chirping made me feel I was out of the city.

The hotel is right across from the Nijo castle, and easily accessible via subway from Kyoto station.

A relatively new property, the hotel features a nice Japanese garden in the middle, which you can view from the restaurants or some of the rooms.

What really stands out are the quality of staff. You can feel how each and every staff tries to go the extra mile to make you feel comfortable, without being nosy. Spa staff are also exceptional. Rooms are new and spacious and amenities are high quality. There's also a shoe shine service by calling guest services from your room.

Sure, the price range is on the high end, but worth every penny. I'd visit Kyoto again just to stay at this hotel.

Surprisingly a Marriott hotel!
It is a zen retreat in the heart of Kyoto that at first feels like you are in a small boutique hotel but then with over 150 rooms and a stunning breakfast spread you realize the clever aesthetic just gives you the first impression of a small hotel. Service is top notch and the word " no " does not exist.

Rooms are in muted wood and the bathroom has a wonderful shower and large bath big enough for two. Everything just makes you feel calm and that is not something that often happens when you stay at a Marriott.

They have 2 restaurants , french and continental with a varied menu in both.

My only disappointment is the gym..... small, very little equipment and gets really crowded at 7.00 am... only one set of weights, 2 exercise machines, one rower and 6 treadmills. If you need to work out seriously you will be disappointed.

The spa is spectacular, huge pools for bathing and outstanding decor and atmosphere. Massage and treatments are wonderful and there is nothing missing in your choices.

The best hotel experience in Kyoto.

The hotel is beyond gorgeous, with large well appointed rooms. I feel like I took a million photos of various finishes in the hotel because they were so well done and what I would love in my own home. We stayed in a Nijo Castle view room. However, I think I’d prefer the internal facing garden rooms.

The Nijo Castle view rooms face the castle, but overlook a very busy street and there was quite a bit of street noise. The view was not anything worth paying extra for.

The spa was fantastic. However we booked a couples massage, but they put us in separate rooms. When we left my husband told me his massage room had two massage tables, so I wasn’t sure why I was in a separate room. But the massage was wonderful.

The bar in the hotel was also fantastic. There are many great bars in Kyoto, so we don’t often stay for a drink in a hotel bar- but this one was worth it. You must stop for a pre dinner or pre night out drink.

The staff were so welcoming, kind, and accommodating. Sakura season is a wonderful time to visit because the weather is gorgeous and they open all the large lobby glads sliding doors.

I had a five night stay in this beautiful hotel and the only thing wrong was that I couldn't stay longer (and that I didn't have room in my suitcase to take home one of their gorgeously soft robes).

As a Bonvoy Titanium, I used my Suite Night certificates successfully and was upgraded to a deluxe suite that was about the size of my apartment. The best part was the large bathtub, which had a neck pillow, bath salts and a TV above the tub, which I used every night and felt very decadent.

I had breakfast daily and tried the Japanese breakfast once. Both that and the American breakfast were plated, not buffet, but were generous meals with small portions of many different foods and excellent quality.

I loved the turndown service, they always left something nice - a face mask, lip balm, a sweet - and filled the ice bucket, which I appreciated, since I often brought a beverage back to my room at the end of the day. It's those kinds of little touches that really make a stay special.

The staff were wonderful and I'd like to make special mention of Timothy, who spoke perfect English and was always so helpful and friendly.

I stay in many hotels and this is one of my absolute favorite properties. Everything was just perfect. I highly recommend it and hope to return someday.

Great service and helpful staff. The staff at concierge helped us plan our activities in Kyoto. The breakfast at Forni was also good for families. The shower is excellent and both my wife and son felt it is best shower experience of their lifetime 😀

What can I say about this hotel!! It is beautiful top notch with amazing service by staff and superior amenities. The room is beautifully decorated and they do turn down service every night and they leave a different gift every night! I got a matcha lip balm my last night here. We did the private onsen and it was a very luxurious experience. The staff is so helpful and so courteous they make you feel like VIP. The shower here is amazing! They have a giant rainfall attachment and the water feels so pillowy soft. I’m rambling and jumping all over the place but that’s how much I love this hotel. A must stay when here in Kyoto.
