My husband and I enjoyed a 3 night stay at the Roku in mid-November. I booked all 3 nights with free night certificates.

Since this was our 2nd trip to Kyoto, I specifically picked the location so that I could spend 1 day vegging out by the outdoor "onsen" pool and the second day hiking in the mountains from Takao to Arashiyama. The hike is especially easy from the resort since getting there is just a 15 minute walk to Ritsumeikan University bus stop and a 25 minute JR bus ride to Takao. FWIW, I also spent a night at the Hyatt Place (great value) while exploring the sights of central and eastern Kyoto, and the night before that was the JW Nara (excellent), so this part of the trip was *not* about standard sightseeing. The Uber from the Hyatt Place was only $17 and the Uber from the Roku to Kyoto JR station was about $25.

At check-in I was automatically upgraded to a Premier Deluxe room because of my Diamond status. However the agent showed me a map of this room, and I knew from this forum that I at least wanted a Garden Deluxe--but what I really wanted was a Poolside Deluxe. I pointed on the map to the Poolside Deluxe, and the agent granted my wish!

The four Poolside Deluxe rooms have big private courtyards that open directly to the geothermally-heated "onsen" pool. While you need to make a reservation to use the pool when staying in other rooms, no reservation is required from the Poolside rooms so you can jump in and out of the pool at your convenience. I could see this room being very hard to get upgraded to in summer when the private patio would be marvelous, but I didn't get to use it much given that the outdoor temp was in the 50s F during my stay. Note that the outdoor shower in the picture dispenses cold water only.

Location-wise, the pool rooms are the farthest possible from the lobby but also the closet to the Shozan resort. Whereas the Roku is the super-expensive 5* property geared towards foreigners, the Shozan is the 3* geared towards domestic vacationers that doesn't even have an English website. But it also means the Shozan has much more affordable restaurants and its private garden was beautiful with fall colors (the gate keeper will waive your entry fee when you tell her in English you're at the Roku).

I really enjoyed our dining experience at Senjyukaku, the traditional Japanese restaurant at Shozan. For about $75 per person (charged to the room at the Roku), we got to enjoy our 8-course Omakase in complete privacy, served by traditionally dressed women. See the menus and pics in this post. I much preferred this dining experience to the $120 tasting menu at Tenjin. If you had to choose, I would definitely pick Senjyukaku over Tenjin.

At Tenjin we did the 17,000 yen ($120 at the currently ver favorable exchange rate) tasting menu and it was fine but not that memorable (Kyoto duck in the pic above). I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of "main dining rooms" that convert from casual breakfast buffets in the morning to fine dining at night. At Tenjin, the main room is just too big and open. The side room by the river is much more intimate as is the water-feature facing bar, but they wouldn't let us sit at the bar for normal food. We also did the $50 afternoon tea at Tenjin (a lot of diamond experience credit and expiring Aspire benefits). It was good--again that big room--but not as good as the JW Nara! Note I did not receive a 25% diamond discount anywhere at Roku or Shozan. But I did enjoy it at Hiltons Hiroshima and Tokyo.

A lot has been said about he Roku breakfast. I thought it was fine to good. I think previous reviewers mostly complain about the lack of a massive western buffet spread. Instead, the buffet is more of a very large table with mostly Japanese food. I particularly liked the octopus and shrimp salad. And there was smoked salmon and charcuterie. I was pleasantly surprised that our made-to-order hot dishes were served with a cup of excellent pumpkin soup, and they included refills on the soup--maybe this addition is the Roku's response to all the complaints about the breakfast. Also, I thought the steak was well-worth the $7 up-charge even if it was small.

I really enjoyed my stay at the Roku and might actually try to go back regularly.

This was my first stay at the hotel as a paid guest and I enjoyed it extremely. I’m going to come back soon!

Room: We stayed in the garden facing deluxe room which has an onsen inside the room. Needless to say, the stay was very special. The room was private, with a pretty garden and Mountain View. The interior design is sublime, you really feel special being here. There’s a well stocked mini-bar, specially curated tea, wonderful products, etc, a lot of details to make even the most discerning guest feel well cared for.

Facilities: Exceptional facilities as would be expected from a hotel of this standard. What stood out especially was the outdoor heated onsen pool, it really elevates the stay. Especially during the fall and winter, this would be a unique experience nestled in the hills. The restaurant is also very enjoyable. It has both outdoor seating on the Tenjin river and indoor seating with sprawling views of the hills. It was raining lightly on the day we were here, which meant we were seated inside. However, it was just as relaxing. The rain did make both the room onsen and outdoor pool more fun. :)

General: The location of the hotel is very serene and soothing, in a remote and quiet part of Kyoto with Kinkakuji just a 10 min walk away. They even have yoga twice a week if you want to make this a healing vacation. There are a number of COVID precautions in place, and they made me feel very safe. The staff is exceptionally kind and considerate, their attention to detail is impressive. My lack of Japanese language skills was not a barrier here, since most of the staff speaks great English. Lastly, the concierge services were great, they were able to accommodate a delayed check-out and get us reservations to the best chicken restaurant in the area.

Final thoughts: I’d whole heartedly recommend this hotel for a special occasion!

Just spent a wonderful weekend at this newly opened Roku hotel in Kyoto. A hidden gem tucked close to the mountains, north of Kyoto, this sophisticated resort is set in a beautiful backdrop. The facilities and the rooms are spread across the beautiful landscape, connected with exterior corridors, just like the temples and the ancient palaces.

We had an amazing view of the surrounding nature from our room. The rooms are spacious, a mix of Japanese craftsmanship and modern sophistication, like the rest of the hotel.

The level of service was top notch and we felt that we were really taken care of. We also received great recommendations for ways to enjoy Kyoto - my favourite was the morning run course - , as well as reservations to great places to eat in Kyoto.

The on-site restaurant provides delicious cuisine, and if you wanted local Japanese cuisine, there are also a few within the Shosan resort.

Although it is in a tranquil environment away from the noise of central Kyoto, the main attractions like the Golden Temple and Ryoanji Temple are within walking distance, and we enjoyed our nice walk to these sites.

A highly recommend place if you are looking for a spacious, tranquil stay in Kyoto. Best of both worlds as you get the Japanese inspired omotenashi experience with the international standard luxury and high quality service.

First, be prepared to spend at least 30 minutes checking in and getting your room key as they like to give you ALL the details of the hotel (not pleasant when you're tired). Also, the shower pressure is very low. Their restaurant food was just average. There was a small baby in the pool despite the "No one under 4 years of age is permitted in pool" rule. The room was very nice, clean and new. If you want to relax and watch TV, you may need to sit on the bed or move furniture (chairs) in from another part of the room. As this hotel is very new, employees need more time and training to make things run smoothly. Again, nice room but a bit pricey for the experience.

I have been contemplating whether to give a 4 star or a 5 star review to Roku because of a mishap during breakfast but decided on 5 stars because I really think they deserve a 5 star review. They were very generous to globalist member. We were upgraded to Premier Deluxe Room. I did my research prior to arrival and found that they have onsen in their Garden Deluxe Room. They didn't have Garden Deluxe Room available on our first night but they were willing to move us to it on our second night. I found out I love the thermal pool so much that having an onsen in my own room doesn't really matter. As a globalist, we received 25% off from their Tenjin restaurant. HIghly recommend the Tenjin restaurant and would encourage you to make a reservation 3 days in advance if you would like to try it. In addition, we received 10000 yen discount for the first night and 5000 yen each night beginning with the second night forward for globalist to be used on experiences within the hotel. You may accumulate the discounts to be used all at once. We applied it to our dinner at Tenjin. Overall, the services from the hotel were excellent. The breakfast was so wonderful. It was really Mr. Eiji Tanaka, Chief Concierge, who made our stay memorable and special. He spent so much time going over the history of Kyoto and sharing with us areas in Kyoto that would be good to visit. Thank you, Roku and Mr. Tanaka. We would love to come back and visit soon.

Stayed here for 1 night at the tail end of our Kyoto trip to see the fall colors. I was a bit apprehensive about the location at first (since it's relatively far from the city center), but this location ended up being one of our favorite places to see the autumn leaves away from the crowds. While it is close to many of the touristy temples, it is also close to some temples and gardens (such as Kōetsu-ji) that don't appear to be frequented by tourists and are just as photogenic.

Our stay happened to coincide with a public holiday, so the property was almost at full occupancy. As a result, the check-in process and breakfast buffet were a bit crowded, but the property and rooms are so well-designed that everything still felt really tranquil and private. The property itself is stunning during the autumn, and the gardens of its sister property (the Shozan) made for a delightful stroll (just remember to bring your room card to gain entry).

We had afternoon tea, dinner, and breakfast at their restaurant and were really happy with the dining experience. Breakfast can be a bit hectic when the property is busy, but the buffet and breakfast entree options were all delicious.

We stayed in the garden deluxe room with the indoor onsen (which we made sure to make good use of!), and the room (while having a somewhat unconventional layout) was absolutely stunning despite its modest size, and the amenities and turndown service did not disappoint for a property of this calibre.

Beautifully situated but far away from the city. We wanted relax and do nothing in the hotel so the Roku Kyoto was perfect for our stay. However some traveler might find the location a bit inconvenient. The hotel is almost brand new so all rooms and hard products are in excellent conditions with great design along with. The guest service might need some improvement. Not many hotel staff spoke english so was a bit difficult for asking my needs. Other than that it was a great stay.

Hilton diamond status recognized immediately upon check in - received upgrade to room with onsen on ground floor - highly recommend this floor plan type as opposed to others not on the ground floor. The property was clean, and the natural surroundings across the hotel give it an estate type feel. Service was refined but not pretentious. Diamond members receive complimentary buffet breakfast and 10k yen dining credit on the first day and an additional 5k on following days. I find this to be generous. Some prior reviewers have noted the breakfast offerings are sparse, but I would say that the quality of both the in room dining and breakfast on site is quite high and satisfying. One drawback of the hotel is it’s location relative to other touristy but as long as you are prepared to taxi around this place is quite nice.

We finished a two week stay in Japan, staying at Conrad’s, Hilton, and Roku. This property has so much potential. It just falls short. As a Hilton loyalist I have been wanting to stay here since it was announced. The hotel and grounds are absolutely stunning! It is perfection. Our room was beautiful, and the bathroom was spa quality. The thermal pool was a highlight. We used it daily and had no issue with reservations. I cannot speak highly enough of the hard product of the resort.

Where the property fell short is service and dining. Our first evening we ate at the only restaurant. Not only was it slow, the wrong entrees were served to us and then we waited another 30 minutes for the correct food. After the poor experience we chose not to dine at the restaurant for dinner again. Not only was it extremely expensive, you can find much better food a short walk away to nearby restaurants. Breakfast was a disappointment. The food options are very limited. We stayed for 6 days, and there was absolutely no change to the offerings. Be mindful of this if you choose to stay here. The service was again very slow and inconsistent. 20 minutes for a black coffee and then even longer because the cream was forgotten is not acceptable. If you need a second coffee, forget about it. They may not bring it even after multiple requests. At the thermal pool, they have a nice selection of drinks to enjoy by the pool, but there is no service at the pool. You have to go inside to order it, which defeats the purpose.

Again, this resort is stunning. If they can get the service and food to a higher level, I would gladly return. Otherwise there are far more convenient options in Kyoto.

Leaving this beautiful 5 star Hotel now and I am sorry to go! This Hotel is literally the definition of five star and what one thinks of when they want a luxurious vacation. As the taxi dropped us off five days ago for our family vacation in Kyoto we were so excited as the location and lobby were absolutely tranquil and serene. The service is unmatched, and the staff goes above and beyond to make sure we are comfortable and want for nothing. During our stay, we had a very early tour which started before the kitchen opened, but the chef came in early to make us bento boxes so we can take on our long journey. The food was absolutely wonderful. One of the mat ways the staff pays attention to detail. the bedrooms are amazing there is not one bad view on this beautiful property. The concierge staff helped with taxi bookings, sushi, and restaurant reservations as well as a spa reservation at the hotel. My daughter and I treated ourselves to a massage which was absolutely amazing and what you come to expect from a luxury spa. I highly recommend this hotel and the Hilton should be happy to have their name on this hotel. Thank you Yurie, Eiji, Kayo,Eru, Eiko, and Shinna you made our family trip amazing and special!
