Stunning place with beautiful interior design, room was specious and well equipped and gorgeous view over the river and the mountains from the terrace. Staff was really helpful and kind. Location is perfect to explore the centre of the town. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful and we were lucky enough to have it on the terrace with a nice view. Overall I really enjoyed staying here and would 100% recommend it.

My wife and I stayed in Genji Kyoto for 5 nights in March 2023. We stayed in the "Large Double Room" with city view, which matches the "City Premium" room on their website. I have never written a review for any vacation or hotel property stay before, but feel compelled to do so after our stay.
The property was exceptionally and thoughtfully designed, from the building architecture down to the bathroom aesthetic. Our room had a large, comfortable bed and bedding set, with lighting controls and charging capability built into the bedframe. The bathroom was a open concept with large bathtub and rainfall shower with great water pressure as well as heated floors; its design was a big part of what we enjoyed.
We had breakfast at the property almost everyday. They accommodated a vegetarian diet (without just tofu options) and their chef was able to personally serve additional items off-menu, and even remembered options we deferred on previous days. There was an option to eat in their lounge, the room, or on their rooftop garden, which I would definitely recommend after encouragement from their architect. The hotel staff were friendly, kind and easy going, and should be commended for how comfortable and complimentary they are to the hotel itself.
The property is about a 15 minute walk to Kyoto station, however within 5 minutes from the nearest bus stop. We found no issue with walking, as the hotel is in the middle of a quaint and quiet neighborhood. Given we were in Kyoto for 5 days, we exercised the option at times of walking to and from places like NIshiki market and the Gion area which can take about 30 minutes, however the bus is likely the more efficient option.
Ultimately there was not just one feature of our stay at this hotel that made our stay; it was the summation of the property design, the staff, its location, among others. We were fortunate to meet with the architect during our stay, who's respect, enthusiasm and knowledge of Japanese culture was clearly evident. We recommend this hotel wholeheartedly, and look forward to staying here again next time we are back in Kyoto.

We were specifically looking for a boutique hotel with nice decor that integrated with Kyoto’s historic buildings. Genji ticks every box and more with a team of professional and friendly staff. The room is immaculate with nice pillows and towels good range of tea selection. The breakfast is nicely prepared and you can choose to eat in your room or the rooftop (although it is a bit cold but with great view of the river)
Having stayed at many Japanese hotels in the past with great guest experience, I was still very impressed from the start when I made the email inquiry for the booking. the team was responsive and very clear in their communications. It was the guest experience that made me decided to go with this hotel.
The team also helped to book restaurants that are hard to get through and super helpful!
The hotel location is within small alleyways which is nice to walk through at night to immerse into the richness of Kyoto history!
It is around 7 mins by taxi from Kyoto station for about 800 Yen, 15-20 mins by foot to Gion.
Quite a few cafes and hidden restaurants around but we generally ate out before returning to the hotel in the evening there is in room dining as well. Recommend this for couples who enjoy a cozy stay who loves to explore to other areas other than staying at tourist spots.
Congratulations to the team who has done amazing job from the start to finish! Thank you for making this trip so nice and relaxing for us.

Thank you very much for your thoughtful and encouraging comments! We're so pleased to have been able to be of service. As many nice places in Kyoto are small and require early bookings, we always hope to start corresponding with our guests before their arrival to ensure satisfactory arrangements can be made. We're really glad that you enjoyed our location for neighborhood exploration as we are in an area with very authentic local street life and community happenings. Please come back soon and let us take care of you. We have lots more recommendations to help you experience the best of Kyoto!

From the welcome drink to the spectacular views, Genji Kyoto did not disappoint. The staff made us feel so welcome. Although I speak a little Japanese, the whole staff speaks and understands English and were so helpful and welcoming. Shin, the bartender was incredible. He helped recommend places to eat and made us delicious cocktails (The Matcha Cocktail was delicious). The Room was beautiful, heated flows, comfortable beds, and the view we paid for was of the River. You could clearly see Kiyomizu-dera from the room. The Shower was waterfall with perfect water pressure and the hotel provides bath salts for a lovely bath, which was much needed after 12 mile walking days in Kyoto. The rooftop garden is so peaceful. The perfect place to enjoy a cocktail or a meal, we did both. This hotel is perfectly located only 1 mile from Kiyomizu-Dera and Gion. The Subway connection is just across the river. On my return trip to Kyoto, I definitely plan on staying here again!

I had a wonderful 5 day stay at Genji Kyoto hotel. It was the most satisfying experience. I tried out both their city view and river balcony rooms.

The staff are so caring and tended to every little detail of my stay and they made me feel so like at home. They made hot honey lemon for me on big snow days, coffee with oat milk every morning and gave me warm pads when I went out in snowy cold days. The breakfasts and everything on their menu were delicious, I was particularly indulged in their beef donburi. Amenities and room supplies from Netflix, yukata, pyjamas, Dyson hair dryer and even my favourite mini Bose speaker are all thoughtfully arranged in the room for my enjoyment. I also made good use of the free self serviced laundry, it saved my days after a long trip.

Room is very spacious with a writing desk, a dining table and a tatami area with incredibly stylish and comfortable tatami chairs. On warmer days I used their free bicycles and rode up and down the beautiful Kamo River. I also walked to places like Kyoto Station, Gion, Nishiki Market and even Kiyomizu Temple. The location is fantastic for exploring Kyoto!

This was the greatest travel experience I ever had and I would recommend this wonderful hotel to anyone wanting to have a memorable time in Kyoto. Thank you for all Genji staff for giving me such a fabulous stay!

This small, stylish and very friendly hotel is in a quiet area off the beaten path in Kyoto, but walking distance from restaurants and shopping. It overlooks one of Kyoto's rivers, with an exceptionally lovely rooftop garden in the Japanese style. There is a young, energetic, eager to please staff who were never too busy to answer questions and offer help. Our room, with balcony, was furnished with handsome built-ins and light woods. We chose delicious breakfasts consisting of western foods served in Japanese style, variety and quantities. There are washer/dryers available to guests which were very convenient amenities, because our stay here came at the end of a long trip.

An amazing find! I spent three nights at the Genji and had a great time. Originally, I planned to stay at a chain hotel, but this was so much better. The hotel is a blend of Japanese and modern styles. My favorite parts were the rock garden off the lobby and rooftop.

My room had a balcony overlooking the river, and tatami area with low seating. I preferred the couch and larger table as I could face outside. Of course, there was a fancy toilet with heated seat and bidet!

By far, the best part of this hotel was the staff. Everyone was so friendly and provided flawless service. I loved that they would call your room 15 minutes before your assigned breakfast time. Definitely try the Japanese breakfast, but the western set was also excellent. Special thanks to the manager Ms. Mao, who suggested I visit the Golden Temple and Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. She also escorted me to the Taxi upon departure.

I really liked the location, as it was a few blocks away from the bustle of Kyoto. The only downside is that the area felt deserted at night. Two train stations on the Keihan Railway (Shichijo and Kiyomizu-Gojo) are less than 10 minutes away on foot.

The most unexpected feature was their laundry room with two free machines (detergent already loaded). However, a machine can take 5+ hours to wash and dry your clothes. Coming from the US, that was shockingly long.

I highly recommend the Genji and would gladly return!

This hotel has it all. It is a quiet (and quietly beautiful) establishment set on Kyoto’s Kamo river, which provides an excellent point of reference to find the Genji. It is surrounded by small residences and lanes making it easy to forget that you are just a few kilometers away from Kyoto’s urban center. The design is elegant, featuring stone, wood, and plants, also blending Japanese and Western style in perfect harmony. You feel its tranquility the moment you enter- as you explore the lobby and common space more, the hotel’s namesake “Genji” reveals itself as some design elements are homages to the classic Japanese epic The Tale of Genji. The beds are very comfortable with soft linens, and the bathrooms are spacious and stylish. The staff are superb: patient, kind, interested, and helpful. Their smiles evoke happy memories of our experience even months after staying. The plant-filled rooftop deck is a splendid place to write, have tea or cocktails, or just look eastward over the river and towards the mountains. One evening after rain, the sunset sky was truly awesome. The breakfast should not be missed, and Chef Çelik knocks it out of the park with excellent meals both Japanese and Western. The hotel has free bikes and helmets for guests with which to explore Japan's seventh largest city. Between the comfort, hospitality, and serenity, the Genji is one of those small hotels that feels like a home away from home. A perfect experience and place in every way.

Style. Simultaneously classy, traditional & contemporary.

Setting. River front hideaway, fastinating centuries old quiet habitat, townhouse converted into hotel

Explore.
Beyond the obvious spots to soak up Kyoto culture, this is an authentic residential neighborhood a short walk into town, free bikes are provided. The local onsen had a line in front of it both when I arrived & checked out. There are a few places nearby for a relaxed meal, such as the Lebanese restaurant 汽 Ki:

Rooms.
My “river balcony suite” was on the second floor, it had two cute tiny Japanese tsubo gardens, the balcony had a perfect view of the Kamo river and the living room had tatami floors. Was told that the bigger rooms are on lower floors as I thought the higher floors had better views.

@ the hotel.
Got to check in at 2 pm with a glass of sparkling wine, which was amazing (since most Japan hotels are strictly 3 or 4 pm checkin). Nice rooftop where breakfast/cocktails are served & and where you can bring your own food and chill during the rest of the day. Cool deco in the public areas, especially loved the big glass bulbs with plants inside

Prices. Moderate US$409

Rating. 4/5
Almost perfect except for the person upstairs that stomped around 7 am on a Sunday

My family and I had the most wonderful six day stay at Genji Kyoto - April 2024. This small hotel is incredibly clean, well maintained and has large comfortable rooms. Both of our rooms were quiet with fantastic views of Kyoto and the river. Breakfast each morning, served in our room or on the roof, was excellent. Reservable and free laundry facilities are on the second floor and was a so convenient after arriving from a week in Tokyo with bags full of dirty clothes.

While amenities were nice, what separates this hotel from most places I have been around the world was the quality of the staff. I am not going to name names for fear of leaving a special person out. I say this with all honesty - from the front of the house to the back of the house, EVERYONE was so kind and willing to do whatever it took to ensure that our trip and our stay at the Genji Kyoto was as excellent as possible. Nothing was a chore. Whether it was sending some cocktails to the room after a long day or making some key reservations during a very busy time to ensure we had a place to settle down for dinner - it was all done on a friendly and personalized basis. My daughter's birthday was during our stay and without asking, the staff made it very special for her. Everyone knew it was her special day by that evening.

I cannot recommend this hotel more highly. This was truly a remarkable hotel experience with staff that was as memorable as this great city.
