Chourakukan was built in 1909 as a State Guesthouse for foreign dignitaries and for important politicians of the Japanese Government. The owner of the building was originally Mr. Murai Kichibei who was known as the "King of Cigarettes" in the Meiji Era where he established a near monopoly on the distribution of the Tobacco trade in Japan before the Meiji government started to regulate the trade. He started importing tobacco leaves from the United States and helped spread the use of cigarettes throughout Japan. Prior to this Japanese people used to only smoke pipes, changing tobacco leaves each time they finished. In the Meiji Restoration period, people sought to improve their lifestyles, and Murai's American style cigarettes became very popular and were welcomed particularly by young people. Chourakukan now owns French and Italian restaurants, coffee shop and small luxuary hotel.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The hotel is situated close to the weeping Sakura and it’s soooooo beautiful! We had an amaaaazzzing, wonderful stay in this hotel. They all are very friendly, genuine smiles everywhere. This hotel is very romantic and you are like sleeping in the little castle. We are very very happy with regards to the service, room is very very clean thanks to the employee who cleaned our room 402. Will surely recommend this hotel to our colleagues in Dubai, and friends.

We stayed in this nice, small hotel with an excellent service and enjoyed the quietness and the excellent Japanese courtesy. The personnel was very attentive and tried to fullfil all our wishes to the best of their ability.
The rooms were nicely furnished and the bathroom was very large showing on the trees of a beautiful park.

Surprisingly inexpensive, absolutely gorgeous surroundings in Maruyama Park (cherry blossom season, Autumn leaves and sparkling snow on the trees) - close to major shopping streets etc - 10 mins walk, elegant building, well heated and cooled, good security. Large room with 3 beds - with truly puffy quilts!!! Pristine cleanliness and great views over the park...a lovely hotel with A+ restaurant, Western style breakfast is available - I have stayed here 5 times with female family members and friends. I combine staying at this hotel and staying in Koya San at a temple there - then I have a mix of both ancient Japanese and classically beautiful western style surrounds...please read the history of this place...I would recommend this place as a wedding venue and reception venue...
