Didn't have a ton of money to spend on my trip to Japan, but stayed at a cheaper place in Tokyo so that we could experience a ryokan in Kyoto. The Yachiyo Garden Ryokan was everything we hoped for: a traditional style accommodation with supremely tasteful decor in the room and exquisite service. We only had breakfast at the ryokan...

Yachiyo is just at the gate on the Nanzenji complex and a fantastic base for Eastern Kyoto. The best thing for us was that getting a really lovely vegetarian dinner and breakfast weren't an issue. There's an old and a new building. We took the old - it means the room is older and creakier, and the bathrooms aren't as...

From the moment we arrived the experience of going back in time was delightful. Check-in was smooth and efficient. We were escorted to our room by a very friendly "maid" who explained the formalities of staying at a Ryokan. This ryokan was amazing. The staff are courteous and helpful - they even steered us towards taking a shuttle (2600 yen/person / $26/person) to Kansai instead of a taxi (~300,000 yen/$300). [[Ask your hotel about this - it's a combination of MK taxi to a pickup location for a large passenger van.]] Pros: -free sake in the late afternoon-evening -on...

We actually stayed here in December of 2015, but unfortunately only just got around to writing this review. While this Ryokan isn't exactly in or near the city center, it is walking distance to it as well as to many attractions in Kyoto. The Kyoto Garden Ryokan is quaint, quiet, and have rather spacious rooms. Ours had a charming and...

Stayed here with my husband after we got married in the temple up to road. Within walking distance of amazing places. The value was great, the staff was wonderful and the food was very nice so I would say worth it to get the meals.

I would highly recommend staying at this beautiful traditional Japanese inn in Kyoto. It's a little out of the way, but worth it. Do know the floors are thin, so you can hear your neighbors (if you want to sleep early), but every detail is amazing. Breakfast was phenomenal, the room was impeccable, the tub was to die for. We had a lovely room with a balcony and a garden view... it is truly an authentic Japanese experience. Beyond the garden was a busy street... possibly request a room far from the street. Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Traditional japanese style Ryokan/Inn (Gion Higashiyama / Kita Shirakawa / Kurama / Yase / Ohara Get the best out of a RYOKAN Kyoto, once prospering as the nation's capital for over 1,200 years is the city of arts, tradition and history. Kyoto plays a significant role in the identity of Japanese people. Experience this authentic part of Japan in a Ryokan. Why do Japanese people feel most comfortable on Tatami floors? Why do Japanese people from outside Kyoto praise Japanese food in Kyoto? Why is it difficult for Japanese people on vacation to decide whether to stay in a hotel or a Ryokan when they come to Kyoto? Kyoto is the city where Japanese people can reassure their ethnicity and remember the most important things about being Japanese. In a Ryokan, get more out of the basic necessities in life; food, shelter and clothing. An experience different from the common hotel. A Ryokan is an accommodation facility original to the owners taste, influenced by Japanese culture, style and feel. A service that can't be found anywhere else in the world; only here in Japan. Don't miss the opportunity to experience a deeper Japan. How to take a ONSEN style japanese bath room, large bath room. You are only to go inside the bath tub after you washed your body. First, you are to rinse your body with hot water. Washing beforehand helps to keep the water in bath tub clean. The rinsing and washing of your body with hot water also acclimatizes you to the temperature of the bath tub, which can be very hot. It is not advisable to jump into the water like diving in to a swimming pool. Please use discretion. Please do not put the hand towel into the bath tub water. Most people place the towel on their head. And remember do not use any soap or shampoo or other skin cleansers in bath tub either. Open 6:30AM to 10:00AM , 15:00PM to 23:00PM.
