Nothing wrong, just didn't really do what we had hoped to have a ryokan to do. We left a great business hotel in Osaka with a great location that might have made this place just as convenient to downtown Kyoto. But that wasn't really the problem, because there's a bus and that was fine and a short walk to some...

Knew this ryokan wasn't in a great location but it looked so pretty in the pictures that we booked it anyway as a bit of a treat while in Kyoto. Turned out to be the worst ryokan we'd staying in by far. Room was tiny with stains on the walls and bedding and absolutely no view or character. We'd booked...

The staff was very helpful but spoke no english. It seem to us the hotel was a base for large Japanese tours groups, not sure... but the lobby was a "shop" of souvenirs. We liked the touch of using a freshly pressed kimono during our stay. But we found no directions on how to use the baths, what to wear,...

This is a hotel outside of Kyoto. It could be a long way to go if you want to frequent the inner city. But its perfect if you are looking for tempels and other items in the outer region of Kyoto. However. In order to have the best visit here book with a garden view. The view is really amazing...

Stayed here for 3 nights and the room was always clean with new towels and toothbrush. The view from the room is very calming and the house and surroundings are so beautiful and authentic. This is a ryokan with shared bathrooms and Kapanese style shower and bathtub, but always clean and with extra towels. The breakfast is very delicious if...

I love the traditional Japanese culture and wanted to try a Ryokan. Travel agent helped us to find this one. The garden was very nice. Staff was not service minded at all. Dinner was OK, but we did not get all dishes from the set menu as promoted. Location is way off. 20 minutes walk to the bus and no...

The ryokan yamazaki is 40 minutes away from Kyoto using JRpass. It's not more authentic for that. The rooms are big but freezing and the common baths are also cold and not that clean. If you want to order breakfast or to send the luggage you have to do it one day in advance while the owner is there (not...

This riokan looked very plain when we arrived but grew on us after a while , it has a nice well kept garden , it is out of town with not easy transport unless you master japanese , we had a superior accomodation with private bath and tea facility, it is clean and well kept . It is 10 minuts...

A beautiful Ryokan in the Arashiyama area of Kyoto. Be warned its a good 40-50 mins on the number 8 bus from Kyoto station. Once there you have beautiful gardens and a babbling stream to help you relax. The rooms were clean and serviced each day. The kitchens were perfect for cooking breakfast or dinner. You can get breakfast or...

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
