After Tokyo, Kyoto was our next 4-night destination. My wife and I enjoyed exploring Kyoto either on foot or by its convenient trains: To-Ji Temple, Nishi Hoganji Temple, Nishiki Market, Hanami-koji Street (Gion District to watch Maiko or Geisha) among others. We also took the Kyoto Regular Tour Bus to visit the Top 3 Kyoto Attractions which operates daily from the Kyoto Station bus terminal (Kinkakuji, Ginkakuji and Kiyomezudera Temples covered) which we thought was great to save ourselves from walking too much. The bus tourist guide was great but she spoke only in Japanese, yet you would be given a headset to listen to commentaries in English or a few other languages whilst on the bus. Now, here is what we thought about our hotel and room:

Check-in: We checked in smoothly after taking the Hikari Shinkansen from the Shinagawa Station to Kyoto Station using our Japan Rail Pass which we bought while in Malaysia.

Bedroom: A semi-double room which is very very tight but we had managed to squeeze ourselves in. Not for large or x-large couples though. Room was quiet with enough amenities.

Bathroom: The bathroom which is split-level and the bath tub was too high for either senior folks or those having knee or leg problems. Hair dryer, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner; toothbrush; shaving razor; shower cap, hair band and comb in the bathroom. Advanced toilet seat and the hot-cold shower was great and easy to use.

Cleanliness: Clean.

In-room Drinks: Free tea satchets and hot water jug available. For drinking water, we bought Suntory mineral water from 7-Eleven adjacent to the hotel. The hotel only provided a bottle per room per day for our stay.

Wifi: Free, always-connected wifi in the room.

View: Facing a road.

Check-out: Check-out was smooth and quick as we had prepaid for our room during check-in

Dining: Did not try any of its F&B outlets. We really enjoyed the wide varieties of food at the Porta Restaurant outlets at the Kyoto Station itself: tempura, curry and more.

Hotel Accessibility: Perfectly located a few minutes' walk to the hotel.

Strategic Location:
Moving around was also great. Flashed Japan Rail Pass for JR trains to move around. Otherwise, used the Suica touch-and-go card on other trains. A point to note: whenever we were not sure which train, platform, or exit to go to, we just have to ask station attendants at the train exits or the information counter. They are just superb guides!

Special Mention: If you are space conscious, please book a bigger room. If you have problem with split-level bathroom or higher-than-normal bath tub, book other hotels. If you are budget conscious, get your food and beverage fix at 7-Eleven, Family Mart or Lawson which are there at almost street every corner.

Thank you.

I stayed in the Hotel for 9 nights with my son and was using Kyoto as my base station to look around from Dec 20-29, 2013. The location of the hotel is great as it is very near the JR Kyoto train station and central bus station to move around Kyoto. Just a few minutes brisk walking from the hotel to the station. As reviewed by many others, I share the same opinion about the room size and facilities, small but clean and functional. They do indeed clean the room daily and change the bath towels, shavers, and whatnot. The most enjoyable part of my stay at the APA Horikawadori is the hot-bath/spa/public bath located on the 11th floor of the hotel. I used the facility everyday during my stay and it was all free. They provide excellent facilities in the spa and I would recommend it to future guests at the Hotel. Friendly and helpful staff at the front-desk.
Overall, it was value for money as I had booked the Hotel without knowing too much through a travel website. Will consider staying there again during my future visit to Kyoto.

Really small room, in fact, the smallest of any of the rooms we had in Japan. Still, it had all the standard conveniences. Bed was less than a double, so barely enough room for two people. Staff was okay. Not particularly helpful and didn't go out of their way to be friendly, but not unfriendly either. Location was pretty good, just five minutes walk or so from the train/bus station. We stayed in three different hotels in Kyoto and this was our least favorite and most expensive. At that, it wasn't out of line with Kyoto prices.

It was a nightmare to stay in this hotel. This has been the worst hotel experience of my life, and it will stay with me forever. They failed to meet the basic requirement of providing a clean room to their guests, not just once, but twice. Even when we voiced our concerns, we did not feel a genuine apology from either the frontline staff or the management team. The same cleanliness issues persisted even after changing rooms. Please refer to the attached photos.

If your height is over 180cm, please consider choosing another hotel, as the ceilings and ventilating fan in this hotel may be too low for comfort. Additionally, if the hotel does not clean the ventilating fan properly, you may find your hair covered in dust. Furthermore, when seated on the toilet, your knees may come into contact with the toilet door.

We do not feel any respect from the hotel side in handling the complaint, especially when the same thing happened again. The management team never showed up to apologize to us. They just sent some frontline staff to handle it. Therefore, this is the reason why the frontline staff does not meet the normal standards.

I believe no one would be happy to stay in a dirty room and have to spend extra time cleaning and dealing with the hotel. It seems evident that there is a problem with the management, leading to poor customer service and housekeeping performance. This ultimately results in experiences like the one we endured. I believe that the management team should take more responsibility and refrain from burdening the frontline staff with handling such issues. Instead, they should offer sincere apologies to guests.

Initially, they only offered one day of free breakfast and a late check-out, which only served to further aggravate us as it felt like they were not treating us as valued customers. They also failed to address how to clean my damaged bag. Consequently, I made a reasonable request for a full refund for the first and second nights of our stay, considering the dirty room, the need to perform their cleaning duties, the damage to my bag, and the time spent dealing with these issues, as well as waiting for approval from the management team.

For the remainder of our stay, we were still charged the full price, which I find absurd given the circumstances. It is unacceptable that we had to fight for a refund, and even then, they were only willing to refund half of the price for the first and second nights. I fear that similar issues may arise for other guests in this hotel.

I hope you enjoy your trip to Japan with a better hotel choice. If you are looking for a cost-effective hotel, I highly recommend the Toyoko Inn Group, as they consistently offer clean rooms and excellent customer service. Thank you for taking the time to read my review.

Thank you for staying with us at APA HOTEL 〈KYOTOEKI HORIKAWADORI〉 First of all, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience we caused you during your stay. Regarding the housekeeping quality of hotel rooms, it is true that we were unable to meet your expectations, which resulted in causing you so much trouble. Also, we will doublecheck the cleaned rooms more thoroughly from now on so we do not let the same thing from happening again. As for the reimbursement, since it was obvious that it would take a while and we found it very difficult to do as you wished, we were only able to give you a partial refund in compliance with our regulations. We really appreciate if you could understand. Thank you again for leaving your comment.

The hotel is conveniently located about 5 minutes from Kyoto station, although there is another APA hotel on the way, closer to the station. I had read that many guests mistakenly go to that hotel first and are redirected to the correct hotel, and saw it first hand when walking past that hotel – two businessmen walked out the hotel ahead of me, to the APA Horikawadori ☺

Sadly, the location is probably the only good thing about this hotel.

I was told at check-in that the hotel was full, and the non-smoking room I had requested therefore not available. The stench of cigarette smoke when the lift doors opened on my floor (I think it was level 5) was pretty over powering, all through the corridor to my room, where it actually got even worse!! I completely opened the window, put the air conditioning on full speed, switched on the exhaust in the bathroom and sprayed the entire contents of the room freshener bottle!! I left the window open while I went out for dinner but the cigarette smoke was still pretty overpowering when I returned about 3 hours later. Spent a sleepless night hoping I wouldn’t die in the room (even with the window open and exhaust / air conditioning running), and asked to be moved first thing in the morning. Thankfully, they obliged and gave me another room on a non-smoking floor (level 7 I think).

The rooms are T-I-N-Y, even by Japan standards. I stayed by myself, and only had a cabin bag – even then I struggled to move around the room!! Another reviewer mentioned that the pillows are uncomfortable, and I can second that. The bathroom is tiny as well, but I think that is a standard size (the whole bathroom is pre-fabricated and made of plastic – walls, door etc., and that is probably a popular model because I had almost the same bathroom in another hotel in a different city!). And the bathroom in the second room had a strong pee smell that no amount of room freshener could get rid of.

Another reviewer mentioned that the pillows are uncomfortable, and I can second that. Although given my struggles with the smoke and pee smells and the tiny room, that was just a niggle ☺

The 4 reception staff that I interacted with (on different days / shifts) all spoke English. Not very well, but OK. They also gave me a photocopied map of bus routes, which I discarded when I got a colour original from the Tourist Information Centre at Kyoto station. The WiFi worked just fine, and the small water bottle and amenities in the bathroom were replenished daily.

All in all, I was glad to check out of the hotel after 3 nights there. Definitely not going to stay there again.

Hotel is relatively clean, reason for this low rating is because of the bed...it's a rock!
Use the onsen the next morning to relieve your back from the pain.
This is not an over exaggeration...there are other places I'd recommend instead

I came here to visit Kyoto for 2 days. Those 2 days ruined my Kyoto experience. First off, the rooms are extremely small. There is barely any room to walk around let alone store luggage there. They also do not clean the beds. My wife and I went out for the day and came back to find the room is exactly the same as we left it, except that placed new towels and robes on the bed, right next to our mess. We arrived at night, and my wife wanted water, so she called the front desk and they said they do not provide water at night and to drink the water in the sink in the meantime. The new robes and towels had paper cranes on them, so one day I decided to hide them, I came back and they did not replace them nor give new ones.

Horrible experience, lazy service. I am definitely not coming back. I guess the only good thing about the hotel is that it isn't too far from the main station.

I knew coming into this hotel that the rooms were going to be Japanese sized; however, I did not realize that I may have had more space in a capsule hotel. The room was dirty, and the bathroom was modular in a particularly awful shade of "old yellow." Furthermore, the walls couldn't be thicker than cardboard as I could hear all of the intimate affairs that were going on in the room next door - ALL NIGHT. Thankfully I was in a room on one of the "Premier" floors, which come to find out, only meant that there was air conditioner in the room. I cannot imagine what the rooms are like sans-A/C on floors 2-8. The breakfast provided was mediocre at best, and crowded beyond capacity of the small restaurant. I was set to stay for 4 nights, but I barely made it a single night before I had to leave for the Ritz-Carlton in just as good a location, and with phenomenal rooms and service.

I came to Kyoto for two days with my son. Booked the hotel through Hotels.com. Ended up paying 58400 Yen for a small room with two single beds! Turned out that the room we originally booked for 48400 was tiny with one small bed so we had to upgrade and pay additional 10000 Yen two get two single beds.
You could expect a hotel for 58400 yen to be a really nice hotel, but this one is really not.
Standard equivalent to a youth hostel! Not recommendable!

The room is so tiny I keep bumping into things when I move around. Cannot open my door because the only place to put a luggage blocks it. Other reviews keep praising the location but there are so many other hotels in the area which I am sure offer better value for money. It feels like a four star price for a one star hotel.
