I choose Kinmata over other choices because this kaiseki restaurant is easy to reach and have been serving since over 200 years ago. Services are excellent, they have staff able to speak fluent English. There are two option of dining which is restaurant area dining and tatami area dining. The later needs reservation before as they are always full booked.... More

I would love to go back again and again to this place.

This is the first time I stayed in Ryokan. Kinmata locates in a quiet street within the central area and is pretty easy to be found. The ryokan is beautifully layout with small Japs garden inside and the room is decorated in perfect harmony with modern comfort. I’m very much impressed by the concealed air-conditioning unit. The breakfast and dinner... More

This is a family run ryokan with great heritage and history. Handed down from father and son, you feel that this is more than just a business for the family. We really felt like we were invited into the family's home as a guest. This is a genuinely authentic ryokan experience and highly recommended for all. We were given the... More

As a last stop in our Kyoto/Nara/Arashiyama trip, we decided to stay at Kinmata for a night. The traditional ryokan is very well kept with a beautiful Japanese garden in the back. As this ryokan is family owned (and has been for many generations), the moment you enter the ryokan, you are welcomed with warmth by the family and you... More

Kinmata is a true ryokan experience! I will never forget the rain falling into the interior garden, the wooden open walkways, our lovely tatami room and the incredible round cedar hot tub bath! I stayed there some 20+ years ago and have been back to Japan for business many times since, but have never had the chance to get back... More

I reviewed this ryokan almost 10 years ago... and nothing has changed! The Ukai family still maintains a traditional inn with superb food and a relaxing and comforting atmosphere. Our suite on the second floor overlooked both courtyard gardens and was an oasis of peace and coolness on a very hot day in Kyoto. This is the perfect ryokan for... More

Kinmata was a truly luxurious ryokan experience. For those nervous about the ryokan experience, I would highly recommend Kinmata. We stayed at 2 ryokans in Kyoto, both fabulous. Kinmata was definitely a nicer ryokan, although more expensive but I found the location a little mainstream. That may suit peiple who simply want to stroll the shops and restaurants. I'm really... We stayed one night in this very traditional Ryokan. Ukai-san and his son were very hospitable and made our stay a very comfortable one. The shared bathroom was clean and well maintained. It was a very traditional Japanese experience which must not be missed. Following the bath, we had the traditional Kaiseki dinner which was seasonal and beautifully presented. They... More

We stayed 3 nights in Kinmata in September. It was a great experience in a wonderful ryokan. We enjoyed the hospitaly from the owners very much. The keiseki dinner we had on 2 nights was very nice. The location is good. We would recommend it to others.

Staying in Shinkyogoku Shopping District

Neighbourhood Profile
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.

“The room on the ground floor is next to a small internal garden. The room upstairs has it's own toilet if you want some additional privacy. Unkai-san's son mentioned that due to the age of the house, it is very difficult to make renovations or even add an extra bathroom or toilet due to conservation laws. Hence the shared facilities which makes it a very traditional place to stay.”
 of 5 bubbles honkytraveller88, 7 Dec 2013 | Read review
“All the rooms have tatami floors; the seats are very low and you sleep on futons. This is very comfortable, but can be a problem for people who have mobility issues regarding getting up from the floor. Some of the rooms have private toilets, but not all. Ask for a room with adjoining toilet if this is an important factor.”
