Hotel right in the heart of the Gino tourist district right close the Higashi ridge that is lined with all the temples to make for easy walking loops. Rooms are very small but you should b e out looking at the temples? Hotel is reasonably expensive so somewhat paying for location. Roomed also centrally heat controlled and so can get a little stuffy and warm and whilst the road goes quiet of tourist traffic it is a bus route as can be a bit of traffic noise - if light sleeper ask for rooms at back?

This was our first stop in Japan. We were very jetlagged and arrived a bit early. We left our cases at reception and explored the temple right at the end of the road. The location is great and a fantastic base for all the temples. The buses are OK to use with Google maps {a little confusing to find the right stops for a first timer} and I would highly recommend a suica/pasmo card as the public transport is great around the hotel. Starbucks was great to have under the hotel, but there are plenty of food options nearby. A very safe area. The room was clean, but small and no wardrobe. But great for a base. I would recommend

Hotel is in a great location. Room was adequate however the whole floor and our room smelt of cigarettes. We did book a non-Smoking room. Lucky we could crack open the window to let fresh air in. It must be a known problem as there was spray air freshener in the room. This helped neutralise the smell for a little while. We stayed for 4 nights and the smell was consistent. I wouldn't stay at this hotel again because of the smell.

This reasonably priced hotel is in the centre of the main street in Gion. If you arrive at the Kyoto Train Station you may as well take a taxi to get there as it is a good 20 minutes or so by taxi. The Bus 100 and 206 apparently get close by at the Gion stop but I never saw these buses operating at all during my stay and using them with luggage is an inconvenience to everyone.

The hotel has a Starbucks at the bottom which if nothing else allows you to recognise the hotel easily from the street. It has a bar downstairs and a massage place that is almost always booked out (with aching feet the next appointment I could get was at 1:30am).

Most of the APA hotels are on the cheaper side but are clean and for Japan, quite spacious. In the twin room (616 on the 6th floor) that we had, we could place our luggage on the rack and still get past between the beds and the luggage. All the usual amenities are provided. Our room had a balcony that you could step out on to.

Walking out of the hotel to the right is a myriad of Temples and paths to walk to the must see Kiyomizu-dera Temple. There are numerous others to see along the way including the 5 storey pagoda on the same path.

Walking out of the hotel to the left and down over the river to the right alongside the canal are numerous resturants and bars. The whole area down this way is worth exploring every night.

Kyoto is high on my favourite cities in Japan and the APA Hotel Kyoto-Gion Excellent is a reasonably priced hotel allowing access to almost everything that you would need. The area the hotel is situated in is called Gion. A tour operator described the place as a tourist trap but I am yet to work what that really meaans, I thoroughly enjoy the area every time I go there.

Thank you for staying at APA Hotel <Kyoto Gion> EXCELLENT. We hope you had a pleasant stay with us. Our hotel is within easy access to Yasaka Shrine, Kiyomizu Temple, Kenninji Temple, Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, Tofukuji Temple, Kinkakuji Temple, etc. Our hotel is located in the center of Gion, an area easily accessible for sightseeing. Ponto-cho, Kyoto's representative Hanamachi district, is located across the Kamo River. Ponto-cho is an area with a high concentration of traditional stores frequented by locals, including geisha and maiko training halls, teahouses, and restaurants. Recently, there are also fashionable restaurants that make use of old buildings, which I think visitors to the area will enjoy. We are very happy to receive your compliments. We will not be satisfied with the current situation and will continue to work hard to make the hotel more comfortable for our guests. If there is anything else you would like to mention, please do not hesitate to contact our staff. Thank you very much for taking the time to write this message. We look forward to serving you again. We picked this hotel due to its walkability and public transport links. It was a great find! The rooms were a little older, but clean, tidy and quite large. They also had tub baths in them which were welcome after a day of walking and sightseeing.
You are in the heart of Gion here, just steps to temples, restaurants and the river.
It's in a great location and we would absolutely stay here again.

Hotel clean and well placed. Reception staff spoke some english which helped us. Room had everything you might need for a short stay. The en-suite was strange, it was a sort of separate module construction. When you stepped in, it gave a feeling of being on a boat, as if the floor moved.

Breakfast was included in the price which was a pleasant surprise to us as we expected to pay.

The only criticism is the bar! We returned from a meal in the city and intended having a night cap. On entering the bar we were informed that there would be a cover charge of Y1000 - we left and got a bottle of JD at the shop on the corner up the road. Now we new why it was always empty.

The hotel is a pretty standard three-four star international hotel. The reception is on the second floor up which is a little disconcerting, the ground floor being occupied by a Starbucks café. The huge advantage of this hotel is the area, especially if you count on staying a few days in Kyoto. You leave the hotel, walk down the street, take the first left and you're in the heart of Gion, little wooden teahouses, lots of businessmen and lots of opportunities to spot geisha (or even maiko one night). Pontocho along the river is just five minutes walk away and there are some magnificent temples and shrines within walking distance along the Eastern hills. So I highly recommend this hotel. You won't regret it.

Kyoto is a must for a visitor to Japan and this little hotel was perfect for our stay.
After reading tripadvisor reviews, we selected this hotel because of its location. We were in the middle of the traditional district and yet the modern Japan was never far away. The walks at night down lanterned lanes, past traditional restaurants and seeing meiko ( geisha) slipping in and out of doorways was magical. ( It was said you may not see them, we saw two including a more tourist oriented mini bus full.) Although not luxurious or large, the hotel was clean and comfortable with a good restaurant for breakfast . We came to see Kyoto, not spend time in our hotel.
I have delayed writing this for 12 months but the memory still makes me want to write it. I would return. Check more recent reviews .

Make sure you walk the Philosophers' Walk.

Other ones hairs had been laid on the bathroom. Cigarette smell had been too bad since no vent is equipped with rooms. Thus you should check the room throuly before you agree the room. And open the window and turn on the air conditioner to clean the air and smell.
The fare was the same as westin during holiday season. But room is too bad to pay.

I stayed at the hotel for 4 nights for the New Year. I booked a twin room and it was comfortable and clean for 2 people. The room was clean everyday and we had a good view of the shrine. The location was very good and near to the bus stops, restaurants and convenience store.
