I've stayed at the classy, elegant, historic Okura four times now and it's always a great experience. The rooms are a good size and well-designed, beds are very comfortable, as are the lounge chairs with matching footrests, there's a long desk with a good reading lamp, wheeled desk chair, small table, heaps of storage space, huge mirrors, a big tv, a fridge and a safe. Complimentary green and Ceylon tea, drip coffee bags and canned water (there's also a mini bar). I love the welcoming origami cranes! A spacious bathroom with a large sink and bath, ample bench space and a generous allocation of toiletries. Yukata are provided.

Last time I had just glimpses of the river as it was partly obscured by a block of flats, but this time I had a really good view of it and beyond across the city, including many key sights, and the mountains. The hotel provides an east and west illustration with the names of each peak and some of the landmarks.

All the food, including for me Japanese breakfast, room service dinners and cakes from the shop in the lobby, was, as usual, delicious and beautifully presented.

The location is perfect, close to many sights, shops and eateries, as well as the river, and with a subway station directly accessible from the basement. Usually there's taxis right outside, either booked or waiting.

Housekeeping is perfect, they replenish everything needed but don't wastefully take away things being used like slippers, body towels, body shampoo etc.

The staff will go out of their way to help you, which became particularly obvious when I fractured my kneecap on the last day of my stay (I had a fall in Higashiyama when I moved abruptly to avoid a speeding motorbike). I needed surgery and as recommended by the Kyoto hospital I decided to return to Australia for that. It took a few days for the insurance company to arrange my flights, and the hotel was able to accommodate me for the extra three nights. The staff arranged it so I didn't even have to change rooms! I'd already had my wheelie sent on to my next destination, Takamatsu, and a staff member called the hotel there and organised its return. Housekeeping was undertaken at agreed times, and done very quickly while I sat in the lobby. Someone would then find me to tell me it was done. Every time a staff member saw me with the crutches, they'd rush to escort me to the lift and offer any additional help. My customised transport to Osaka Itami Airport was efficiently pre-booked in about two minutes. Next day I was escorted to the vehicle and did not have to lift any of my luggage. I so much appreciated all of that! It's not easy being alone a long way from home after a partly immobilising injury, and if I'd had to choose where to stay during the waiting time, I couldn't have chosen better than the Okura. Thank you all so much!! I can't wait to return!

You can tell it has been one of the luxurious hotels in Kyoto when it first established. Don’t get me wrong it’s still graceful, clean, good hospitality like all 5 stars hotels do, it’s just not modern and contemporary. But it has its own charm. Though about 10 mins walk to city Centre, it’s rather convenient- right next to key bus stops, can access subway station directly from hotel basement, many restaurants, more shops down in subway corridor

Amenities include basic shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Also provide hair brush, shaving kit, toothbrush & toothpaste, cotton and Q tips, bath salt and facial cream, toner, makeup remover and facial cleaner

The only thing is you have to pay for using the fitness facility

Concierge was very helpful in giving restaurants recommendations, way to go to local onsen bath, etc. And do utilize their free shuttle to and from Kyoto station

Don't be fooled by the negative reviews. This hotel is a flagship and a classic Western style hotel run in the Japanese style. Staff are professional, always engaged and the location cannot be beaten. It has direct subway access with bars and restaurants and unlike many four and five star hotels in Japan room rates include a high quality breakfast buffet with view of the entire city. If you have never been to Kyoto or Japan before, don't be afraid to leave the station area. This hotel is part of the downtown hub within walking distance of department stores, museums and places of historical interest.

We arrived here after a stay at the fabulous Okura in Tokyo to find this hotel was not in the same league. The hotel lobby and rooms are quite dated and the rooms not well cleaned. We had mold in the bathroom shower (grout) that just needed a good scrubbing with bleach and hair in and around the tub that wasn't mine or my husband. That grossed me out! The room itself lacked enough electrical outlets to charge our devices and the room decor was very outdated. The bathroom had a step up to enter which was not accessible for some people. The staff were kind but not very warm or friendly as they were at the Okura in Tokyo. Breakfast was included in the price of our room and it was a buffet style service. The food was laid out on a long cafeteria style self service so you had to fight with other guests for access. The staff did a good job replenishing items quickly but the food quality was not as good as the Okura Tokyo. I didn't like taking a tray and filling a sectioned serving plate similar to what we used in elementary school. Overall I would not stay here again. PROS: room was quiet and the bed comfortable. Well located area for touring Kyoto. CONS: outdated room decor and functionality (lacked enough electrical outlets); food quality was mediocre and overall hotel needs to be updated (1980s vibe with stuffed jacquard gold sofas; watercolors of Italian scenery and gold veined mirrors).

Situated between City Hall and the Kamo River, Hotel Okura Kyoto is centrally located to shopping, restaurants and attractions. We stayed 2 nights in a large standard at $178 per night with a sumptuous breakfast. Though it doesn't have an onsen, the deep tub allowed a similar experience.
There was a demonstration next door in front of City Hall. I was looking for a 7-ll, Family Mart, or Lawson's where I could find early morning coffee.
This is a top choice if staying in central Kyoto.

It is really unfortunate to write this review on my first night in Japan. I had booked another hotel, but then selected this one because it had a gym and both myself and my husband needed to use the treadmill, given the temperature outside is above 30 degrees centigrades. We were told by the hotel that we need to pay 3,300 Yen per day per person to use it. We had booked via Booking.com and there is no mention in the first place where the gym appears among the facilities that there would be an additional charge. You have to dig into the pages to find this mentioned.

We travel for work and pleasure all over the world, and have never been charged to use the gym in a hotel that lists this among their facilities. I recommend you really check carefully when you book a hotel in Japan, something we should have done much better.

The hotel is more expensive than others in their range, and quite dated. We would have happily stayed given our compromise, but this has made it a reason not to return. And worse, even when the manager saw the discrepancy between the different pages of Booking.com did not make a single move to help with this, although we explained we are not interested in the pool, the sauna or anything else in their centre. Would certainly not return.

This hotel is well situated at the Gion area with great access to most places. It is also walking distance from a subway station.
The staff are super helpful as my daughter arranged with them to deliver flowers, cakes and balloon to my room for my birthday. They are very responsible as they will take a photo of the delivery and sent it back to my daughter.
Th buffet breakfast is very good with a wide variety of Japanese cuisine and on the 16th floor overseeing a beautiful sceneries.

Fabulous. Clean, convenient, classy.
The location is a bit far on foot from Kyoto Station, but there is a convenient office and waiting room with refreshments to wait for their frequent shuttle bus. They’ll hold your luggage there too. Don’t miss their wonderful Japanese breakfast overlooking the central river.

I cannot say enough about this wonderful hotel. Wonderful, courteous staff, the fab location, nice rooms and plenty of ammenities. Just like the days when a 4 star hotel should be.

Location is absolutely perfect for me traveling with my family - husband, 2 kids in their 20s and my parents in their 80s + a late 70s aunt + a caregiver for my mom (cannot walk anymore / in a wheelchair).

Walk a bit from the hotel and you will find yourself at the covered shopping street which connects all the way to Nishiki Market.

On B2 / subway station, accessible thru the hotel elevator, you can buy almost everything you need there. Small Muji, supermarket, 100 yen store (Seria) and some cute shops.

There are about 4 or 5 restaurants and can satisfy your international food cravings. We only ate at the pasta place there and it was delicious! Although the carbonara needs a bit more salt, the other dishes are wonderful.

The area beside the hotel is so ethereal. Exit left from the driveway, turn right, walk a bit and I have never seen scenery as beautiful. That’s the start of the Pontocho Alley.

I also paid some of our nights with points and they made it so easy.

Isn’t it obvious we will go back again to this hotel?

Thank you so much, Hôtel Okura staff!

A beautiful hotel full of old world charm! This hotel knocked our socks off. We had just travelled from Tokyo where the rooms were tiny tiny tiny so what a wonderful surprise the hotel Okura was . Everything was just perfect from the complimentary shuttle bus from the train station to the incredibly welcoming staff. The room was huge and well kept and very very clean. The hotel is what I would call old world elegance so don’t come expecting all shiny lights and loud flashing neon - that is not what this hotel is about. We had a lovely big double room which was so quiet. The breakfast was another big highlight - fabulous selection from fresh fruit to freshly made omelettes - it even had decaf coffee and as a no caffeine person you wouldn’t believe how hard it has been to find decaf anywhere! The breakfast selection was huge wonderful pastries too and it caters for both western and Asian breakfast tastes. The location was fab and we could walk to most places or take the metro. Great restaurants nearby too so no need to go too far. We will definitely be back! Thank you Hotel Okura for such a wonderful experience.

Answer from KaraokeSue7

That sounds a lovely trip and I hope you'll have a great time! Never been to Munich or Switzerland except on a day trip. I have been to Amsterdam and Belgium. Bruges and Ghent are charming and I visited Ypres for the Last post Ceremony. This was very moving but there's not much else there-a small town which has been lovingly and carefully reconstructed as there was huge damage in the war. There are a lot of battlefield tours if you're interested in history. London has plenty to see but is very busy and expensive to stay, eat, do tourist stuff, so personally I wouldn't stay long there Paris is lovely and you can get around on a river cruise, hopping on and off. There are less expensive small hotels there in the City. Again, personally I wouldn't stay anywhere outside the City as I did this once and it took hours to get in and out so wasting your valuable time. I wouldn't like to recommend anywhere for you as prices and quality can change. I stayed in the Latin quarter last time I went. Hope this gives you some ideas and again have a lovely time. x
