We were looking for a Japanese ryokan experience, and Ryokan Rakucho was the best one that we could afford. For the price we paid, we were quite pleased. There weren't any meals served, but the hostess is friendly and helpful (she speaks a smattering of English), and the feel of the whole place overall is very Japanese and traditional. Tatami mat bedrooms, bedrolls, traditional Japanese bathroom, and even a little garden
in the center. The rooms have a charming and traditional decor and were quite pleasing to stay in. There is a computer at the front with free Internet access, and the hostess can also provide you with a number of helpful touristy things, like bus passes and train schedules.

While it wasn't in a terribly central location, the excellent Kyoto bus system made this ryokan in a quiet neighborhood very easy to access. It was also nice being on a calm and safe little street, although the dining options in the immediate area aren't too impressive. Avoid the "American" restaurant around the corner--there is nothing American about it, and it's not very tasty either. The folks at the hole-in-the-wall Brazilian bar just a little further down are friendly, even though the owner isn't actually Brazilian, nor does anyone there speak anything but Japanese.

Nice, traditional ryokan in a quiet area.
We stayed here for 4 nights and we have been accomodated in a nice and very, very spacious room overlooking the garden. Thank to the heated futon, we had a really pleasent comfort.
Katsunori, the person who takes care of ryokan, is professional and very helpful and speaks a very good english.
Good value for money.
Definitely, one of the best accomodation in Japan.

From the minute we got there we were greeted and basically taken care of. The weather was good. This place was very clean and had a homey feel to it and great location. We had turn down service in our room everynight also. We would definitely stay here again.

We stayed in this ryokan because we were late to book a place in Kyoto and it's was hard to find something else. We stayed in many ryokan in Japan they are often aren't so cheap but if you find a good one it's a real pleasure. This ryokan tends to be more a touristic hotel, thou sleep quality is very good. Location is a bit far from everything esp if you plan to use bus, many buses are not running after 22 so if you are late in gyon area or in bar downtown be ready to pay for taxi. Laundry is very old and it's too many people always and only 1 washing machine. Our room was located very good, in the end - so it was calm, but there are rooms next to laundry or refrigerator or toilets where can be noisy coz many people are walking throw. Be aware that for late chek-out you can be charged. My advise for Kyoto - try to stay in a reasonable hotel closer to train station, there is even very nice capsule hotel female friendlily, ryokan experience is better in a less touristic places.

We stayed at Rakucho on our four day stopover in Kyoto, and loved returning every night to our warm ryokan room. The facilities are basic but well maintained, and the owner is super-friendly and helpful with general tourism advice. She really looked after us and made sure we felt at home for our stay.

There's plenty of nearby eating (the okonomiyaki restaurant five minutes to the east gets a special mention) and it's straightforward to reach public transport and get around - we travelled not only through Kyoto but also to Nara, all easy enough from Rakucho as a base. The only mild downside was the walking distance to the nearest subway station, but the walk was pleasant enough :)

This is a nice small ryokan style guest house at a real budget price. It feels a bit more like a quiet backpackers (shared showers, washing mashine available, etc.), but offers a unique Japanese experience at a very affordable price. The owner is friendly and will give you tips and advice on touring around Kyoto. One problem for me was the rather stale air in the room, so if you have asthma or other allergies, I wouldn't recommend staying here. However, if you are not sensitive in that respect, it's a great place to stay. The location is fine (don't be fooled by the remote location on the map as Kyoto is quite spread out, so nowhere is particularly convenient. There is actually a number of buses running nearby and it is fairly close to Kinkakuji and other tourist attractions). Enjoy your stay in lovely Kyoto!

As with other reviewers, we found the hosts friendly helpful and trusting in the way we could come and go. The room was comfortable as were the futons. The patisserie and supermarket round the corner were handy and the buses - a number of routes only a few minutes walk away took us most places we wanted to go.

We loved our stay here at the Rakucho Ryokan. It is an older wooden house but all the other guests were polite and it was very quiet. Our room and the bath was remarkably clean. Of all the tatami mats we stayed on, these "beds" were actually the most comfortable. Our room was warm, overlooked a lovely garden and there was internet service!

It is a bit outside the main Kyoto area but was easy walking distance to the subway. There some great places to eat near the ryokan and it is smoke free, a rarity in Japan!.

My only critique would be that this is family owned so the owners weren't around 24/7 but were very friendly.

We stayed at Rakucho because we wanted a ryokan experience but were also on a budget. The room was very simple, comfortable futons on a tatami mat floor, a small table with a kettle and cups, and japanese style robes and slippers were provided. Toilets and showers were shared. No breakfast is served and there isn't really a kitchen area, but there is a shared refrigerator and a grocery store down the street. There is also a pay per use washer/dryer available. The pros were the price, rooms/bathrooms were cleaned daily, free wifi (and a computer in the lobbby area if you don't have a laptop). The location, north of the city center, was actually really well connected by numerous buses and a subway line, making it very easy to get to the Golden Temple and Hagashyiama area. (Getting anywhere in Kyoto takes a little bit of planning as there are numerous buses, two subways, and a handful JR trains, none of which necessarily connect.) The cons of this ryokan was the lack of amenities and the thin walls..earplugs are highly recommended. Overall, I have no real complaints, it was an average experience!

My husband and I stayed at the Rakucho Ryokan for 3 days and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It's in a quiet neighborhood, but close to the subway and bus lines. The staff was very helpful with directions and suggestions for sites and area restaurants. The ryokan was clean and the futons were so comfortable - probably the best beds in our whole trip through Japan. We also enjoyed the hostel-like atmosphere as the other guests were very willing to share their insights and adventures around the city. While this may not be for the high-end traveller (since you share bathrooms and other facilities with the other guests), we would recommend it for the overall experience. Bring slippers (although the ryokan does supply them, too).
