Saw some recommendations on trip blogs for this Ryokan and decided to book a night with them. No regrets. Upon entry, we were greeted by the staff as though we were distinguished visitors. Staff were friendly and conversant in English. The Ryokan is conveniently located within walking distance to Kodaiji and Kiyomizu-dera. We were constantly 'wow-ed' by the authentic experience... I stayed here for one night with my boyfriend. We had a lovely room (I think we had the superior room as there was a separate room for eating.) The hotel is in an amazing location and you really get to experience a traditional Japanese hotel. The staff were amazing and so attentive, speaking great English. Our room was lovely,... More

My girlfriend and I spent one of our two night in Kyoto at Motonago. It was a great experience and well worth doing. The staff are very welcoming and helpful and speak good English. Our room was nice and spacious (although it did have a slight smell to it). This isn’t the highest end Ryokan in Tokyo but it is... More

We wanted to stay at least one night in traditional Japanese hotel and were really lucky to book this hotel (in fact, our Japanese friend did that because one of bookings was cancelled). And such a perfect place as Kyoto for this kind of experience. Perfect location - we visited park nearby with illuminated trees, within a walking distance there... More

My wife and I stayed here for two nights and had a great time! We had breakfast and dinner both nights there and the food was completely different each time. The staff were so attentive and welcoming. The location was very central. I couldn't imagine a better Ryokan!

If this is your first trip to Japan and Kyoto, then staying at Motonaga is adequate and will give you a basic traditional experience staying at a Japanese inn. However if you have been to Japan before or are Japanese, look elsewhere! There are much better options and better customer service for the price you pay at Motonago. Having grown... More

We stayed here for 2 nights. The service was excellent. Motonago's location is perfect if you want to explore attractions within the 2km radius in Gion. We opted for accommodation + breakfast & dinner and what a great decision! The fresh and delicately prepared meals exceeded our expectations! Great value for money. The traditional setting and common bathrooms made the... More

Having traveled to the most spectacular ryokan with onsen in Izu, this place had a lot to live up to. I had read the reviews and wondered how it could possibly be as good as everyone said it was. It was actually better! From the moment we arrived (with slippers laid out in welcome) through to the check in process,... More

Excellence in every detail. It is not cheap but if it is your first time in Kyoto, then it is definitely a great experience worth the money. From the food, to the bath, to the location, we could not have asked for more. Tips: If you've visited Kyoto, you would know how difficult it is and how lucky you need... More

Such a treat to stay here! Hosts - super friendly, knowledgable, and genuine. We felt like guests, not customers, and enjoyed chatting with our hosts when tea and meals were served. When we wanted to send our bags to our next destination, Motonago was extremely helpful in arranging this for us. Facilities - such comfortable rooms. Beautiful origami treats left... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Motonago hospitality With Kyoto flavor a homy feeling. Motonago nestles in a quiet, nostalgic scene, completely apart from the hustle and bustle of the city. Once you step outside, you can sense the overflowing taste of Kyoto - Japan's old capital. All the charm of Kyoto is gathered here, where Motonago stands. On entering through a door with a tiled roof while seeing a tasteful earthen wall made using traditional techniques, Motonago welcomes you with a warm hospitality that only a humble inn like ours, with its 11 rooms, can offer. Guests can relax while enjoying dinner and breakfast in their rooms, and our staff wear traditional kimonos as they serve the meals. Kyoto style cuisine made with special seasonal ingredients succeeds in bringing the Kyoto taste, with our chefs' sophisticated skills and selected menu, to our guests. ... more   less
