Large rooms for Japanese standards although a bit out dated by North American standards. Very clean, staff is super polite but they hardly speak english so it's a bit hard to get much help. No wi-fi in rooms. You will need to go down to the lobby or connect via cable.

Across street from the Imperial Palace, area is quiet and there are very little options for cafes and shops nearby.
It's about 7 minutes walk from the subway station. The good thing is that they have a free shuttle to the subway running every 15 min until 10 AM.

I loved the garden inside the hotel! Such a serene place! 4 stars because of the garden.

We stayed in a Japanese room with tatami beds. Very romantic as well with a view of the Palace gardens.

I would've given this hotel a 5 stars but their service was not as we had hoped. No one can speak good English, so our requests were not met as they didn't understand a thing that we said.

English is spoken barely at the reception, but at the end you get the info you want.
Rooms are very small, and carpets are everything but new and fresh.
Japanese bath facility is average and very clean. Laundry available on 4th floor.
My suggestion is to pick a hotel in Gion or close to the Jr station.

I've lived in Japan for many years, speak and use Japanese professionally, and have visited off and on since 1984. But I have never received such poor service as I did this afternoon at the Cafe Arbois in the Kyoto Heian Hotel. I took a colleague who was visiting from the U.S. for coffee, and we were completely ignored by the waitstaff. Perhaps they assumed neither of us would speak Japanese, but even after I approached the staff in the restaurant area to ask in polite Japanese if this was cafeteria style (since we'd not been waited on for 10 minutes), I got a cool response. This was not a language problem--somehow they do not seem to be interested in serving foreigners. The comment below this one here on Trip Advisor about the front desk staff barely speaking English suggests that the hotel is not prepared to accommodate foreigners, which I find surprising given its location just across Karasuma-dori from the Imperial Palace.

Needless to say I will not return, despite the lovely garden view (which is why we stopped in to begin with). It's a pity--usually service is very gracious wherever I've been in Kyoto and other parts of Japan. So this was a very unusual and disappointing experience. Next time I'll go to Toraya instead.

It's an elegant hotel in a quiet area. Location is nice, right across the road from the imperial gardens. Staff are professional and attentive. However, my room and bathroom were TINY and spartan, more like a typical Japanese business hotel. So the value for money wasn't really there. I get that hotels in Kyoto are pricey, but I wouldn't come here again, at least not for an extended stay. It was OK for just crashing for one night. I didn't go to the cafe and restaurant but they seemed overpriced.

I have stayed at this hotel three or four times across the years--my favorite in Kyoto. The rooms are large by Japanese standards; many overlook the traditional garden; not a lot of traffic noise; the for-fee breakfast buffet is wonderful (Japanese and Western); and there are large baths for men and for women, besides the small, guest room tub. The lobby area is beautifully decorated, again with views of the garden. A big step above a business hotel. The hotel is located across from the old imperial palace--a nice place for a morning or any time of day stroll. There is also a tasteful gift shop in the lobby, and a restaurant, which I did not use. The staff is friendly and helpful. Among others things, they will provide a map of local eateries.
Located about midway between two subway stations--about a 15 minute ride from JR Kyoto. It may seem far from things, but Kyoto is not that big a city, and the subway and bus systems are very convenient. I for one appreciate the quieter neighborhood. The hotel may have a van for transport to the subway, but I did not use or inquire.

I booked this hotel through Agoda last minute and it was not cheap, around $350 and then when we arrived they asked for an extra $140 for our 5-year-old. We only stayed here for 12 hours, I thought this crazy. We took it up with Agoda the third party provider and they offered us a refund. The grounds were amazing, Japanese room was massive and staff efficient. It's really tough finding hotels in Kyoto during Blossom season. It's a dated hotel but if you want authentic Japanese then this is your place. Happy to get the refund in the end, but its a really pricey hotel for what you get. Staff barely accomodating.

Little presence with only a doorway entrance off the main road.Reception on floor 2, they were always helpful. In fact were it not for the staff this would be a 2 star not 3. Room is very small and bathroom the usual Japanese style plastic box. Only averagely clean. Breakfast is adequate.

We stayed 5 nights as so much to see in the Kyoto area. A wonderful English speaking lady checked us in & thanked us for staying that long. Very comfortable room overlooking the garden. Laundromat on our floor also some vending machines and free WiFi.
We had dinner there the first night, very nice meal.

Very rarely do I recommend staying an extra night in. Hotel, but the Ryokan Heian In Kyoto across from the Imperial Palace is exceptional. While our group of 6 stayed only one night, I would recommend two nights if your travel schedule allows it.

It is a place where there is little to distract you from the tranquility and peacefulness of the setting with its meditative Japanese garden and Japanese style living accommodations.

Yes, be prepared to sleep on futons on the floor and traditional setting with low tables and tatami straw mats which are typical of Japanese decor along with sliding shoji doors.

There is one small section that holds two chairs and a coffee table, but otherwise plan on sitting crossed leg on the mats and drinking complimentary tea.

The public furo was rather small and basic, but exceptionally clean. The furo is a complement to the peacefulness of the place.

Our plan included dinner and breakfast...exceptional if you enjoy Japanese cuisine. Your breakfast will be facing the garden where an occasional visit by Japanese cranes may highlight a wonderful and peaceful meal. The Fall colors (late this year) have not yet shown their true colors.

The hotel gift shop boasts one of a kind gifts. Take advantage of it as you will probably be hard pressed to find them elsewhere as our friends discovered.

The location is not conducive for shopaholics and the walking uninteresting except for the Imperial Palace which is located very close by. The Palace grounds are worth a visit and it is free.

We would definitely return here again, but for two nights as one night will leave you wanting more.

Clientele mainly mature Japanese nationals.
