We stayed 4 nights and can't reccomend it enough. We were made to feel welcome and the staff were kind and helpful. Rooms were comfortable, cosy, clean and with a traditionally Japanese feel. The hot baths in the basement were such a treat after a long day walking in Kyoto. The lounge area overlooking the garden is a wonderful space to relax. The green tea ceremony and traditional Japanese breakfast are some of our most treasured memories of our time in Japan. Thank you Nishiyama Ryokan for making our stay so special!
We stayed with another couple for 1 night, but I wish we had more time to fully enjoy the stay at Nishiyama Ryokan. They treated us with care, paid detailed attention to our needs, and the rooms were super clean and the bathrooms were really nice. I also used the big bath downstairs and it was also clean and relaxing. I slept well in a nice futon. The food was first class and I think we ate everything. A big compliment to the chef and the server lady was super assertive and helpful. We were also amazed by the traditional tea ceremony performed and served by the second generation owners. They were so fantastic, polite and kind. We want to come back. I'd recommend this Ryokan to anyone.
An amazing place to stay! The staff are so kind and hospitable, and the facilities are amazing. The breakfast is quite expensive but it's an amazing experience so I would definitely recommend adding breakfast for at least one morning.
Excellent host. Onsen in basement. Beautiful gardens and surrounding streets. Convenience stores nearby Good laundry facilities Lovely traditional breakfast but only need to do it the once during your stay
Much appreciated the public bath and the tea ceremony. The staff was very helpful. Close to main attractions and markets and near a subway station. The price for similar ryokans in Kyoto the same period was higher.
Everyone was incredibly kind and attentive. They made my husband and I feel right at home. I definitely recommend this place for anyone visiting Kyoto. The food was amazing and the staff was so attentive. It is also in a great location making it incredibly easy to navigate the "must-see" spots of Kyoto.
Excellent Ryokan with a good location. Close to the Kyoto city hall bus stop and metro station. The staff was excellent, very courteous and helpful. Rooms were clean and loved the sleeping on the Japanese style futon and pillows. Ensure you experience some of the events they have on-site such as the tea ceremony , sake tasting etc. The only downside was that it was not easy to guide taxi drivers to this location. Either use 'foreign friendly ' taxis whose drivers can speak English or use google maps in Japanese navigation mode.
I had a lovely stay of three nights here recently. The staff are incredibly helpful and kind and the room had everything I needed. The onsen is also a wonderful place to relax. A great place to stay that is not expensive yet central to everything Kyoto has to offer.
We stayed here two nights because I wanted to stay in a ryokan while in Japan and this place was very reasonably priced with a good location and tripadvisor certified excellent. I don't understand why it has that excellent tag, and I really wish we would have stayed at our previous more modern hotel which was about $50/night more and drastically better. This is family run and they are very nice and I appreciate that, but they spoke very poor English and were unable to book me a dinner reservation because of misunderstandings (a later hotel was able to book just fine). And really the rooms are just run down and bathrooms are tiny. Wallpaper was peeling off. The futons you sleep on were very thin, you're basically just on the floor with an inch of cushioning. Price was very reasonable, and if you're on a budget with kids or several people, this could work out and maybe be fun, but seems like they post rates that are very high then mark down significantly so it looks like you're getting a deal when that really should be the starting price. Good location though. And we admittedly did not partake in the traditional tea (because we were lazy) or dinner (due to price) that was offered.…
This is our first time at a ryokan and we are so glad we stayed here for 3 nights. First, this is a family owned ryokan. Everything is done w care and love! We felt so well taken care of. I’m a big hotel chain traveler and this has been a great experience. Location is perfect because you can either walk to popular places or take public transportation. It’s a 15 min taxi ride from Kyoto station. There are many local eateries with great prices. There are fabulous coffee shops and bakeries. The location is brilliant! Price of ryokan is very reasonable and there are so many thoughtful touches that are complimentary. There’s a free tea service in lobby every morning. We stayed in a traditional Japanese room and loved it.
