My new husband and I stayed here for one night during our honeymoon. All the Japanese style rooms were booked so we were in a western room. It was very spacious, and had an additional tatami sitting room. The gardens were absolutely gorgeous and the breakfast was beautiful as well as delicious. The staff was very kind and helpful, and...

We stayed here for 4 nights with 2 adults and 3 primary school aged children. The rooms were great - very comfortable futons on tatami mats. The children loved the communal bath downstairs. Very comfortable, friendly staff, excellent location. Our family loved it and would definitely stay here again. The Japanese breakfast was delicious. As well as seeing Kyoto (which...

We caught a Taxi from the Train Station to the hotel - only cost about $10Australian. The check in process was quick. They helped take our bags up to our room and showed us around the room etc. We were able to walk to bus and train stations to get around town. They are also very close to some great...

We were in Kyoto for 5 days and loved every minute of our stay at this hotel. We stayed the first night in the traditional Japanese room and then moved to the Westhern Style room. Both were clean, comfortable and well worth the stay. The service was exceptional. The staff warm and friendly and very acomadating towards our 2 year...

We stayed at Nishiyama Ryokan for four nights in late February 2011. The room showed a little wear and tear, but was clean and spacious. The futons were comfortable (and the staff were more than accommodating in providing a second mattress to aid my bad back). We were staying at the end of winter; however, I imagine the air-conditioning would...

Yes it is not a typical Ryokan, but it is not the same price either! In comparison, there is not much difference anyway. The rooms are clean and spacious (with private bath, which is not standard in a ryokan), the public bath is really nice, there is free internet and wifi in the lobby (too bad there is no internet...

Pros - Central location, large so it often has rooms available, nice garden area. Cons - The bathroom in your room is so small it's like trying to shower in your car; the futons were old and uncomfortable; a little dirty by Japanese standards; the public bath in the basement is hardly worth the effort. A ryokan/hotel hybrid, it seems...

We had no idea what a japanese ryokan was except what we have seen on the photos. When we got to the Nishiyama Ryokan (a bit far from the Kyoto train station, we took a taxi and it cost us 14€) we were pleasantly surprised. The rooms are big, clean, with a bathroom included, with a nice 4th floor view...

Been there with my family total 4adults in Jan'11. We got the family room on the 5th floor and it's really spacious! Staff were so helpful and offered us to help with our trip. A very enjoyable experience: nice house and small garden, very well located in a quiet street close to Gion and public transport. Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
