After a cold welcome we were pleasantly surprised by our spacey room with a view of a small stream. The small guest house is located in a quiet area, but during the day with the windows open we could vaguely hear traffic and the ding-dong of a nearby convenient store. Noise didn’t carry much between the rooms. We had a... More

Stayed for 3 nights in the middle of September 2015. It is very easy to find this ryokan. Get off the mus or subway and walk a narrow street along Kamogawa in the direction of the Kyoto Station. The main door is open except night hours and early morning. As you enter the first things you see are a very... More

I absolutely loved the location of this little BnB- right by a little stream canal, on a very lovely little street in Kyoto. It was a little hard to find, but is in a semi-central location, fairly close to local trains. The hotel itself doesn't offer guests a ton- there is a shared bathroom, and the rooms are fairly sparse,... More

1. The place is old, dark, damp and BADLY insulated. I and my boyfriend rent a doulbe room with really poor glass window, and we were freezing and shivering the first two nights out of three. Guess what? The heater was turned up to 30 deg (and I felt guilty as hell because of that) and the blanket was thick... More

The exterior of the ryokan is unimpressive and so is the interior. The only consolation was we were given a room facing the river in a quiet neighbourhood. Do not expect a fantastic view though! The bus stop is closer to the ryokan than the nearest subway station. It takes about 15 minutes to walk to Kyoto Station. We didn't... More

Clean and comforatable. Nice owners. The location along the Takase canal is very quaint and gives it a ncie atmosphere. A bit of a walk from Kyoto station, but a nice location once you get there. The price is very reasonable. Stayed with my wife, mother-in-law and two children and we all loved it!

We stayed 3 nights in this traditional japanese hotel on the top floor of a small house. The neighborhood was quiet, with a river passing right next to the front door. We had two matresses on the floor, a thermos with green tea. There was only one bathroom and it was full of humidity and mold. The kitchen was basic... More

This is a great value traditional hostel, in a quiet neighborhood not far rom central Kyoto. This is one of the 2 ryokan where I stayed and I loved the style of the room. The common areas felt nevertheless a bit outdated, like some decoration was missing.

There are tons of place to stay in Kyoto & this is a good place for the price, but pretty basic. We had a triple room which was littered with old souvenirs- quaint, in an odd way. There's no bath, and other places that don't cost much more often have a nice hot Japanese bath. However, there is a sento... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
