We've stayed at several Toyoko Inn hotels across Japan and they are almost exactly the same. But for the budget traveller, they are good value, clean and mostly in very good locations. We tried to book the other Toyoko Inn closer to the Karasuma train line but it was full. My husband and I would have preferred a double room but that was full too - so we got a Business Twin, which was not a bad choice because there were 2 TVs, 2 desks, basically 2 of everything! The room is not large, but coming from Asia and having stayed at crummier hotels in Hong Kong for double the price, we were not complaining. A caucasian guest would find the room rather small and the ceiling low, but we were happy and would recommend anyone else to stay here. We are now staying at the Toyoko Inn in Osaka. You get consistency with this chain, so you know exactly what to expect, but if you want a concierge and all the frills, you won't get it here.

Located very near the busy intersection in front of Keifuku Shijo-Omiya Station, the hotel is easy to miss. There are many roads branching off from this intersection and following the right road near the Police Station is the key. It is adjacent to another hotel Kyoto Village and in front of Ark Hotel. The facade of the hotel is narrow with car and bike parking, hence from the street the reception or the hotel decor are not visible.

Once inside you are offered the usual Toyoko Inn hospitality, comforts and efficiency, although the management sounded a little apologetic in their notice that the staff were new and might not offer the most professional service, or something to that effect.I have no complaints with the reception, who spoke or understood very little English.

The rooms are not big but complete and convenient in all amenities. The toilet foor is at a higher level than the room floor, whch was a minor incovenience for me. If you do not want your room to be cleaned, please notify beforehand to enjoy discount on rent plus your fresh towels delivered to you without your having to be away from the room for a few hours.

Free wi-fi and free wired cable keep you connected. The breakfast at ground floor lobby comes with fruit juice, tea, coffee, toast, butter but no eggs, however with a wide choice of Japanese fare. Japanese customers enjoy their breakfast and have a big meal to embark on a new day. Breakfast is available for a limited time during the day.

The hotel location is most ideal, being near to so many bus stops. For JR Pass holders the JR bus stops at a bus bay near the hotel. For others it is convenient to buy the Yen 500 to move around the city tourist spots at your covenience. Three trips with your pass makes up the amount spent.

As usual, Toyoko Inn offers clean no-frills but with all basic necessities accomodation.

While not as near the tourist belt as its Shijio Karasuma, it has a good supermarket across the road.

We stayed in the business twin which offers better privacy if you are sharing with a friend

We spent 3 nights here. It is at a good location and the front desk staff are very helpful. Nothing really to write home about. The best thing is that it is just across the street from the Keifuku Electric Railroad station, making it very easy to visit Arashiyama.

If you arrive at Kyoto by JR, then do take the bus from Kyoto JR station. It is much more direct with no need to change. You can buy a full day bus pass for 500yen and use it in Kyoto for the whole day. (One journey is 220yen and if you take 3 journeys you will already have saved money.)

My husband and I went to Kyoto for a week as part of our honeymoon. This hotel was simple, but had everything we needed. The rooms were spacious enough and the TV even had an English channel- although the films were ones we'd not heard of before, but it was nice to hear some English. The staff can't speak English very well, but they are very patient and helpful. We weren't keen on the breakfast - as I don't eat fish and found that most of the riceballs / potato salad etc had fishy flavourings, but it's ok because there's a Macdonalds just down the road, which is very reasonably priced. There's also a Daiso (like a £1 store) which is fab to pick up some nice souvineers and gifts nearby and lots of bus stops. The bus will take you to Kyoto station, where you can get to all the main tourist spots and you'l even be able to get to Gion (the Geisha district- very reccomended) and some of the main shrines & temples using the bus service. There are 3 laptops in the hotel foyer, that guests can use for free, which is useful to contact home and the travel agent as well as to get online assitance with maps etc.

Convenient for sightseeing in Kyoto. Reception staff had poor English, but were polite. Breakfast was Japanese/Western, as mentioned on other reviews. Room was small but the free wi-fi made up for it! Launderette on the ground floor very useful. Definitely good value for money if you are on a budget.

Booked here by our agents. Arrived at the hotel - 15 mins before check-in, but were made to wait!
Men sleeping in the lobby and checking out 'interesting' websites.
Business Twin room - very strange - 2 of everything (TVs, kettles, fridges). Walk in - door to bathroom right in front of you. No more than a foot from the end of the beds to the wall. No space for luggage, clothes, to sit or swing a cat. Windows overlooking a building less than 3ft away - no light! Beds as hard as rock.
All very clean though, but not a place if you intend to relax a bit after a day of activity before going out for food. We checked out and found another hotel (using this hotel's free internet).

When a group of 5 of us planned to visit Kyoto for the magnificent autumn colours in the spring the challenge was to find a hotel that’s easily accessible to public transport, clean and suitable for the budget of other members of the group. And we found all that in Toyoko Inn Kyoto Shijo-Omiya! Luckily one of us is a member of the Toyoko Inn Group and could book 6 months in advance. Even then we just managed to book the last 3 rooms for mid November back in May 2016! The hotel was about 500 metres from the north exit of Omiya station. The room was not big but clean and functional. The price was really reasonable. The room rate included breakfast with Japanese rice and soup, but luckily for me, they also had coffee and raisin rolls (there were sliced bread for toast too). They also offered a discount of 600 yens to join their eco-plan of not having the room cleaned everyday, but fresh towels were provided and hung in a bag on the door handle outside. For a hotel on a busy street the rooms were surprisingly quiet. It a no-frill hotel that we could crashed out in bed after a busy sight-seeing day, and there was so much to see to stay in! Because of the convenient location the hotel seemed to be well patronised by business people too.

Great value for money. Staff does not speak english perfectly, but good enough to answer your questions.Coin laundry is very useful. The hotel is easy to miss because the 206 bus from Kyoto station stops on a place from which you cannot see the hotel. Just go around the drug store and look right. You will see "Village hotel" sign. Your hotel is just next to it.

Breakfast was not that tasty. Onigiri, potato salad, some bread. However, it is a pleasant bonus to the low price.
