Big Room, clean bathroom.
Staffs have conversational English & are friendly. They act very fast on customer request. :)

Good location for those who don't mind "long hour walking". There's a large partial-indoor shopping area on the other side of the Oike Dori, just opposite. Actually, all the way from the Shiyakusho-mae Station & down to sanjo-dori, are shops & restaurants of all kind that open till late midnight, very crowded area :) Potoncho street is also within walking distance. Even the Nijo Castle & Kyoto Imperial Palace is just 30mins walk. Oike-dori itself, shops on this street close pretty early around 8pm or earlier, but you'll enjoy an early morning stroll along it.

Note: For those with luggages. If you're arriving from the Shiyakusho-mae train station. Take the Lift/Escalator & Walk on-ground to Exit 1, because "Exit 1" is stair-only. Moreover, you'll need to walk for about 10-15mins inside the station to reach Exit 1. Then, its another 4mins walk from Exit 1 to the Hotel.
So you might as well, find a lift and go on-ground first, you'll see all the "Exit Number on-ground" as well, so no worries. Exit 1 is the last exit west from the station. The pedestrian is really wide & well conditioned. Lots of small unique shops along this road. There's a High Sch opposite the Hotel, so you can' miss it.

Although nothing fancy & the room has a slight old wood smell but for just 4k the room rate paid, it is very cheap & worthwhile. So, if you're looking for cheaper stay & not too picky, yes this a good choice. But if you're looking for a luxury ryokan experience, you'll have to look somewhere else :)

Oh, remember to bring your own toiletry & towel.

I stayed at Hotel Sugicho for one night as the hostel I was booked in could not accommodate me for the final night I was in Kyoto and it was very conveniently located just off the same street. I found it very pleasant, clean, and the staff were very kind and respectful. The room is more than adequate by Japanese standards. It's an older hotel, probably built in the 1960s, so don't expect a modern structure. But it has a kitchy-ness to it which I found very appealing.

We were spoilt by the huge room and big futons, that we were almost taken aback when we went onto our second ryokan elsewhere (though strictly speaking Sugicho is not a traditional ryokan). 6 futons and there is still space for the central table with 6 seat cushions! Amenities were basic though, indoor onsen (not sure if it is hotspring water) in a nice touch. Counter staffs speak basic english, helpful and friendly.

It's quite nicely located; 5-10min walk from a subway station, easily access to Nijo Castle, Gion, Fushimi Inari via the subway and the connecting keihan railway, will be nicer if we didn't have to change so many times to get to places though (tough with 2 kids and my 2 parents). But i guess that how it is everywhere unless you fork out more to be even more central, i.e. Kyoto JR station.

If you have budget concern and you just need a simple ryokan stay, then this is for you. It's cheap compare to other ryokan. During our stay, many students staying in this ryokan. But the room is very spacious. However, if you have a sensitive nose, you might find it a bit smelly because of the tatami. There's no wifi in room. Wifi only available in lobby.

I read some reviews cannot find the location of this ryokan. So i did some homework before going. Not so bad. I can find the ryokan quite easily.

The staffs are quite helpful. And we were given light breakfast was a bonus.

5 Nights in a clean and spacious room with private toilet and bath.

Location is much more easy to reach than expected. If you travel from KIX by Haruka(airport train) to JR Kyoto station, just take Kyoto Metro for a few stations, walk 10 mins, arrived.

The area is an artistic and traditional kyoto house residential area, arts and design schools around, the Kyoto Royal Palace and Kyoto Parliament are just a block away. There are lots of classy dinners and cafe in the area, japanese, italian, french, bakery, boulangerie, cafe, tea house, all the classy dinners in original tradition kyoto house. You can really feel the local kyoto style and culture... if you like some horse sashimi, it's just next to the hotel... lots to discover in this area...

Opposite street are the shopping streets, all the way to shijo kawaramachi, Gion, and so on...

The nearby city metro station has an underground shopping street(Whitty), with dinners, cafe, 100yen store, local supermarket, can walk through to the covered shopping streets...

city loop bus(100yen circular bus) stops opposite street...

I took the Kyoto City Bus 64 to Arashiyama, right opposite street.

Very traditional japanese hospitality, polite and thoughtful. The room is very spacious comparing to other city hotels in japan. The room had been refurbished, the toilet seems very new, air con is all new, since my stay is in winter, the aircon kept the room warm. Blazing speed wifi and lan, very simple breakfast provided.

Since this is a budget ryokan, have to make futon(japanese bed) myself every night, no chairs...

Considering the price, location, service... one of the best deal in Kyoto. Enjoyed.

So yes hotel is on lower standard since it is dated, but rooms were VERY clean, sheets as well, bathroom spanky clean. Room without breakfast is under $50 which how much cost a hostel in Kyoto. So YES I would recommend this hotel for a budget traveler. Make sure to ask for no smoking room though they do not have it they will make sure you room does not smell with cigarettes . Service was good as well, polite and timely.

I did not have much expectation on this hotel but was pleasantly surprise soon as we arrived. The staff was nice and friendly, the room was very spacious (10 tatami mats) and our 17 month old baby was very happy running around the room without us worrying about her falling off beds or bumping into something. A good room style if travelling with a toddler. Breakfast was provided as it was sufficient. Limited selection but good enough. Location is very good, close to a main road with a subway station, a bakery, a 7 eleven and a nice restaurant that is not too expensive but serves good food (can't remember the name though). Only 10-15mins walk to Pontocho (or ponchoto) alley which offers good range of dining and very vibrant at night. Not too far from Nishiki Market although I thought the so called street foods there are overpriced. All in all, a very nice stay and will definitely recommend.

For the money this place is excellent. Great location in a nice area, close to good shops, supermarkets, restaurants and subway. Traditional style rooms, quiet, great shower. Large Kimono style dressing gowns changed daily. Free breakfast (but did not try this as out early every morning) Staff friendly. Would definately stay here again. Recommended.

This is what I wanted to experience from my trip to Japan. To stay in this Japanese style hotel room is what I've wanted all my life! The hotel staff was attentively helpful beyond belief. To make a long story short we rented bikes, another valuable amenity from Sugicho, and my friend was carrying his passport (this was his first international trip/ rookie) and he ended up dropping it in the street somewhere along the way. We didn't realize until two hours later and about 10 miles into our bike ride.

We immediately went back to the hotel to see if maybe he had left it on the counter. The hotel staff took remarkable initiative to help us find his passport. They recommended step by step what we should do, police report and trace our steps, while they reach out periodically to the police station to see if anyone had found it. with in a 24 hour period, the hotel staff helped us with the language barrier and helped us recover the lost passport that a noble person in Kyoto found!

The hotel staff, along with the location, the price, the free breakfast, the bike rentals were all on point. But the beautiful and friendly people that work at this awesome Hotel really stand out and that's why you should stay here!

This is the second time that I stayed at this hotel and it remains clean and consistent. My wife and I were in Kyoto for only 3 days and were out seeing the sites most of the time so we needed a clean place within our budget. Hotel Sugicho fits the bill nicely. We had our own bathroom, extra futons to sleep on, clean room, nice central location and an excellent breakfast. If you are looking for a clean no frills hotel to stay in, this is the one. The highlight for me was the breakfast. You inform the front desk what time you will be up and they have your table ready to go with a fantastic authentic Japanese breakfast. I was very surprised at how good it was!
