We stayed at Mitsui Garden Hotel before. Again they didn’t disappoint. Rooms here are new, staff excellent and accommodating with English speaking skills or even with a translation egg.

Breakfast is either a western or Japanese main course and a semi-buffet. Surely to satisfy many cuisine preferences. The sea bream claypot rice with young bamboo shoots is a must-try.

If you prefer convenience to Kyoto station for folks who take a day trip / overnight here, consider the hotel near the Kyoto station instead. Or you can stay further here and get hotel to deliver your bags to the Kyoto station Mitsui Garden Hotel which is just a few minutes walk to the station, at 300 Yen per bag.

The hotel was in a nice quiet street. The hotel staff were very helpful in all aspects of our stay. Like most Japanese hotels the rooms are quite small and you will need to double check the number of beds when you book for three people.

I have a four year old who is quite noisy but the staff were very considerate. The breakfast was very good with a great selection. The breakfast is worth including in your stay.

Thank you very much for choosing Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shinmachi Bettei and for your detailed comment on our hotel. It brings us great joy to hear that you enjoyed our central yet quiet location. Our hotel is located on a small historical street called Shinmachi, and that makes our guests feel a special atmosphere that you can only feel in certain area in Kyoto. Also, we are pleased to hear that you were satisfied with our staff service. We constantly strive our guests in ways that cater to their needs and are very happy that our staff made your stay comfortable. However, we are sorry to hear that the size of the room you stayed did not meet your expectation. As you said, Japanese style room is not that big compared to European ones. Once again, we sincerely appreciate the comment you gave us. We certainly hope to welcome you back again very soon. Front Office Manager

Nice hotel , clean rooms . Totally let down by restaurant food. There really is no excuse as the hotel is surrounded by the most amazing restaurants covering all tastes.

Modern with traditional Japanese vibes.

Clean and nice. Service is top notch. The public bath is a bonus.

Breakfast is average but adequate. Room is very small, typical of Japan.

Lots of restaurants nearby. Convenient store is one block away, not too far.

Only complaint is it is somewhat a distance from the metro.

I booked this hotel as our base for our first visit to Kyoto.

The trip would coincide with my girlfriend's birthday, so we decided to splurge and have dinner at a famous traditional Kaiseki restaurant we have heard and seen so much about.

As with a lot of fine dining restaurants in Tokyo and Osaka, a booking for foreigners usually needs to be done by the hotel as english is sometimes an issue and as to verify that the international guest will be in town for that date (to stop people from holding bookings) - we have done this before for a sushi restaurant in Tokyo via ourhotel, no big deal.

Being 3 months ahead of our trip, and given the popularity of the restaurant I wanted to ensure we had a booking so I called the Mitsui Garden Hotel Shinmachi Bette, (which we had already booked and paid for) to ask if they could help me call the restaurant and make the reservation for us. Simple enough...you would think.

To my surprise I was told by the hotel they can only make restaurant reservations for guests during their stay. I explained that this restaurant is quite popular and would surely be booked out if i were to leave it until then, was there anyway they could have someone help and book ahead just to be sure. However this was to no avail, even when passed to the manager of the hotel, she flat out refused to help me with any bookings, until I was staying there.

I was taken back to say the least and in all honesty it made me not want to stay there at all.

I booked into another hotel (which was cheaper and not in as good a location) and they immediately helped with arranging my booking to the Kaiseki restaurant.

In all fairness I did not end up staying at this hotel, so will not comment on the rooms and facilities, but the service i received before my stay was enough for me. I'd just like to warn others who may be looking to book into a nice fine dining experience which requires a hotel to help book - stay away!

Very clean, nice design, great food at the restaurant. Good service. Great value for money. The only set back is that I could not open the shoji screen in my room since it was directly facing the neighbour. Make sure you ask for the room facing the street.

The hotel is brand new, so everything is crisp and clean, but there are some really nice stylish touches. The court yard garden and rock garden make you want to hang out in the lobby just so you can enjoy looking at them. We found the bed and pillows particularly comfortable (on the firm end of the spectrum). There is a laundry room for washing your clothes yourself (600yen per load) or itemised laundry service where you pay per item for someone else to do all your washing (200-400yen per item).

Fantastic choice for eating out in the local area, I would highly recommend just walking up and down the blocks, between the hotel and main roads (Karasuma & Shijo) as there are kimono shops, restaurants, museums and bars everywhere!

Other people said the hotel was difficult to find, but we took the underground to Shijo and then walked 2 blocks West then 2.5 blocks North and found it without a problem. It's about 5-7minutes walk from Shijo. If you can't read Kanji/katakana - you can recognise the correct building as it is next to a Yubinkyoku (post office) with the red T sign and red postbox outside.
Don't be put off by the white curtain hanging in front of the door - this means the hotel/shop/restaurant is OPEN!

We arrived at the train station with a train from Kyoto and were picked up by a bus who dropped us directly in front of the Ryokan. We were extremely friendly greeted, left our shoes at the entrance and continued walking in the slippers provided by the hotel. The hotel has traditional wooden interior, a fantastically maintained internal garden with fishponds, small bridges and trees. Our room was garden-facing, and in the traditional layout of the Ryokan style. We were served by the same person throughout our two-day stay, and pleased by a natural, helpful and friendly attitude. On both evenings, we had the Japanese style 6 to 8 course dinner, consisting of multiple small dishes with fish, meat, soup, tofu and more. It was painstakingly prepared with extreme attention to detail and we highly recommend the experience of traditional Japanese Ryokan dinner. For the breakfast, this may not be everyone’s taste. I chose to have Japanese-style breakfast on both days, but admittedly, was happy to have a strong cappuccino afterwards in a nearby cafe. On the 2nd day we had booked a two-hour spa in the system hotel of the Ryokan. This is highly recommended, as it provides a private spa outside view onto the mountains. It comes with a bottle of champagne and is a relaxing, not too expensive addition which is really nice, in particular when it is cold outside.
Overall, this Ryokan offers a fantastic, relaxing and calming experience with impeccable, but at the same time, natural and friendly service. It is not cheap, but worth the expenses.

A compromise between the Japanese Onsen experience but instead of sleeping on the tatimi bed on the floor, you get a regular bed that makes life a bit more easy. The room was small and compact with a clever use of space providing all the basic facilities including TV, free wifi, in room coffee/tea making. The entry and the lobby of the hotel is very simply zenish nice feel. The big public bath area - men women separate - is very cosy and relaxing. The breakfast buffet is OK, but the dinner at the restaurant is just so so. However there are numerous fantastic restaurants all around in this very popular oldish area with nearby ultramodern shopping streets and all that. Over all, very good. And by the way, they have special way of indicating time in a 25 hour cycle - bath open from 15:00 to 25:00..??!!

Thank you very much for having stayed at Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shinmachi Bettei and taking your time to write a valuable comment. We are really happy to hear that you like our design concept collaborating with Japanese modern and tradition. Also, we are pleased to know that you enjoyed our public spa. It is not natural hot spring, however, is artificial carbonated water which surely makes your whole body relaxed. On the other hand, we feel sorry that you were not satisfied with dinner at our restaurant IZAMA. As you know, there are lots of great restaurants around our hotel. We hope that you were happy with those restaurants. In addition, we are sorry for making you confused about the way of indicating time in Japan. We use 24-hour notation and sometimes indicate the time of mid night like that 25:00 means 1 am, 26:00 means 2 am. Once again, thank you very much for your review of our hotel. We are looking forward to seeing you again in Kyoto, and hoping it will be soon. Front Office Manager

Thank you very much for your inquiry. For your first question, you can take the Special Rapid Service from JR Sannomiya Station then take off at JR Kyoto Station. It takes 1 hour and 10 minutes. At Kyoto Station, please change to the subway and take off at Shijo Station. From Shijo Station to our hotel, it takes 7 minutes by foot. For your second question, from Kyoto to Narita Airport, first, you can take the shinkansen from JR Kyoto Station to JR Shinagawa Station, then change to the line to JR Narita Airport Station. In this way, the JR pass works! Front Recepcionist, Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shinmachi Bettei

Thank you very much for asking Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shinmachi Bettei. There are lots of delicious Western breakfast restaurants around the hotel. There is also famous "Nishiki market" in Kyoto in about 10 minutes walking distance. Another place is "Maeda Coffee" is famous for the western food being delicious. Dear Ms. Susan L, Thank you very much for your inquiry. To get to our hotel from Kyoto station, the easiest way is by taxi, and it will take you about 15 minutes and cost you around 1,500 JPY. In case you prefer taking public transportation, you can take subway from Kyoro station to Shijo station, which is just 2 stops away, and go up the stairs to the ground level from exit 22. It will take you around 7-8 minutes from the exit to our hotel. I hope this answers your question, and feel free to ask us or contact us directly if you have any other questions or need any further assistance. We look forward to welcoming you! Can you accommodate a child of 11 months, with a crib in the room?
Answer from front s
Dear Ms. Karen A Thank you very much for your inquiry to MITSUI GARDEN HOTEL KYOTO SHINMACHI BETTEI. About your question, the capacity of rooms depends on the room type, and we guess the Moderate Twinroom which is our most standard type of the room is a little too tight if it is being considered about two adults and suitcases as well. We also have bigger types of the room which are called Superior Twinroom, Deluxe Twinroom and Executive Twinroom. You could check how big each rooms are on our offifial web site. I hope it would be helpful for you to make the travel plan. By the way, I can mostly reccommend Executive Twinroom to accommodate a baby with a cot. It is the most specious room in the rooms we have here at this hotel. If you have more questions, or any further assistance, please feel free to contact us. We are looking forward to seeing you!
