There are so many places to visit in the world and each with their own list of must do's. In Kyoto, you must stay at a ryokan. I thoroughly researched ryokans in the area and determined a modern ryokan just isn't for us. If you are going to an old city to visit the historic culture you shouldn't stay in... More

This was my ford experience at a Japanese Ryokan, but my husband's third. I enjoyed the beautiful views of Kyoto, Gion district. The garden was lovely and the dog was super sweet and beautiful. The room was clean, and for the age was well maintained. The main reason we could not give more than a 3 star review was the... More

This place is really bad! The rooms are tired, the property is unkempt and the service is appalling and for these "privileges", they charge ¥58,000 (around $550) a night! The first alarm bells went off when we arrived and nobody offered to help us with our bags. It was not a big deal, but not what you want when you... More

Three of us ladies shared a room at Tamahan from 2 to 6 November 2016. We were so looking forward to staying at this ryokan - it had fabulous reviews and an excellent location in the historic quarter of Kyoto, just a short walk away from Gion, Kiyomizu-dera, Kodai-ji and the Yasaka shrine. Unfortunately, the stay was disappointing, bearing in... More

What can I say? We loved our experience. The environment is serene, the food is beautiful and delicious, and the staff, even though they barely speak English, extremely courteous and always trying to help. It is worth noting that we slept well as we could add extra futons on the floor to make it more comfortable. This is Japanese hosting... More

We have stayed here twice in the last year. If you want an authentic, ryokan experience this is your place. The location is superb and the breakfast is to die for! The ladies in the house are so sweet and don't speak much English. It isn't a problem because they end up providing everything you need. Don't miss this gem!

Located east of the Gion district we were greeted by the site of dozens of Miyako making there way to and fro at 11 in the morning. The cobblestone entrance and clipped trees and shrubs gives you a taste of what is to come, controlled yet informal and relaxing. Our room was incredibly spacious with a modern bathroom as well as... Tamahan was our first stop on our Japan trip. We chose a ryokan for our first night, exactly to see the entire experience, including traditional dinner - kaiseki - served in the room. We booked Tamahan after see very good reviews and was a great choice! It is very typical, experience started with shower (that could be in an ofuro... More

I would tell anyone coming to Kyoto that they should stay here! We were greeted by the sweetest elderly woman & gorgeous dog. This Ryokan is very classic and authentic. The rooms are perfect. The room we stayed in had a fridge, good size bathroom, mini room and main room. They staff is amazing, they are the most helpful and... More

I love Tamahan and was looking forward to introducing my partner to it. It lived up to expectations. We had a lovely suite with a garden view and the staff were helpful in accommodating my partner's inability to sit on the floor. The food was fabulous as on previous visits and the location is superb for exploring on foot and... More
