This hotel was well located in Kyoto, not far from a subway stop, and lots of restaurants. The room decor is kind of tacky, but the rooms and bathroom were fine. No breakfast was included but there is a starbucks across the street and lots of places around. There's a nice shrine across the road - we could see the...

If you have a map of Kyoto, place your finger in the middle, where this hotel located, not a tourist area, just normal folks carry on their daily life, therefore nothing compare to Kyoto station traffic, a taxi ride from Kyoto station about 1100 yen, the subway Karasuma line from Kyoto station in the 3rd stop, Karasuma Oike station, exit...

Hotel Monterey is my top pick in Kyoto and I keep on coming back every time when I visit Kyoto. I remember the first time I stayed here, I emailed the concierge to assist in booking several restaurants in Kyoto. Nowadays, many restaurants in Kyoto only accepted reservation via hotel for foreign visitors so the hotel assistance is really important....

We stayed 5 nights at this lovely motel in November. Room is small but that is normal in Japan. The en-suite was lovely. My only complaint was the bed :0( we had heard the beds here were hard via other trip advisor reviews but they were Really bad. Both my husband & myself got Very little sleep even though we...

We found this hotel to be very comfortable and well located. While the room was small, this is typical. The staff was very helpful. We had emailed the concierge prior to our arrival and she was great at making reservations. When we arrived, a folder was waiting for us with our information. I thought the hotel was expensive for what...

This hotel is close to the city downtown area and very close to a subway entrance. We took a cab from Kyoto station though to reach the hotel since it was late when we arrived. Hotel is very clean and front desk and concierge were very friendly. We booked a King size bed in the room and it filled the...

We booked this hotel as a best of an average bunch as hotels in Kyoto are very expensive in November for the autumn leaves. We had previously had a hotel in Hiroshima and for the next bit Tokyo and all hotels similar price per night. This one was the worst for the money. Tiny room compared to others and bed...

This a truly authentic Japanese hotel - slippers everywhere but super basic. Beds were rock hard mattresses on a rock hard floor. I ended up stacking up 4 mattresses but still no sleep and to top it all caught the flu! No en suite bathroom/shower and check out at 10am!!!. I hated every minute of it so unless you want...

Spent 3 nights here at Hotel Monterey. Nearest attraction is Rokkaku temple, and Nishiki market (10-minute walk). The location is a little out of the way from central Kyoto and bus stops (we realised after arriving Kyoto that it's not the subway but the buses or taxis that take you to major tourist attractions). However being in the quieter part...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
