Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The location is great for shopping on Nishiki Market and Shijo Karasuma, where only 5 minutes walking from the hotel. All Staffs were helpful and friendly. Especially the concierge(Ms. Ishihara) was very helpful when we asked the guidance for the sightseeing in Arashiyama , Kifune shrine and Kuramadera as well as neighbourhood good restaurants.

Super clean, bigger rooms than most we’ve seen in Japan. Less than 5 minutes walk to the subway. They had a bar fridge, a few hangers, but no safe. My only criticism is that it was impossible to get a hold of the spa, no one ever answered the phone and you couldn’t just pop in to get to the floor where it’s located. All in all, good stay though.

Very decent hotel and the room is big. There are 3 of us but the room was big enough to accommodate 4 beds plus space for our luggage. It is well located near the train station and short walking distance to Nishiki market and Teramachi shopping area.

I stayed several times 2021 and had a very good experience. Location for subway buses and taxi is perfect. There are 2 Starbucks set close by.
The rooms were spotless With great views over to Arashiyama.
Check in was quick and easy with very good English. It’s easy to walk to Omiya station and Nijo castle. Nishiki is in on your doorstep so perfect for clothes. Kyoto is the best city for clothes in Japan.

Hotel was clean, well located and very lovely. The room sizing was good and the beds were big and comfortable for Japan too. The staff were helpful and kind. Such a beautiful feeling. Would definitely stay here again if in Kyoto.

We Spent a week here for our vacation. From the Karasuma Oike Station it was a 2 minute walk to the hotel. Very Convenient. The Facade of the Hotel was great too. We arrived around 1Am in the morning. We were welcomed by a Friendly Old Lady in the Front Desk.
Room Review:
1) No Bottle Water
2) Small Room
3) Carpet seemed musky - dirty feeling
4) Curtains were dirty as well
5) The Bed was okay
6) TV had NO english channels. only CNN .

Staff and Service Review:
1) I left my Umbrella and the staff said they didnt see anything
2) The Male front desk agents were more uptight and not friendly unlike the female receptionists

Overall. I would suggest this place if your looking for convenience to the train station, but for service and room quality for the money your paying for ..not that much
I hope they fix this oversight.

In general a good hotel. Rooms are a bit small for European standards. But I really have to complain about the staff. My girlfriend and I went to the Spa area. Actually the fact that there is a pool in the hotel was one of the main reasons why we booked the hotel. Unfortunately you have to pay extra every time you enter the Spa area.

We were also not aware that the Spa area is not mixed - means they have separate facilities for men and women. Anyway, after realizing this we left the Spa soon. The staff at the desk asked us why we leave and we explained them that we did not know that the spa is separated.

The staff laughed about what we were saying. I can imagine that it may be funny for them, but anyway I would have expected a more professional behaviour. We replied to them that it may be uncommon for them, but in Europe it is pretty standard that the facilities are shared, so there is no reason to laugh at us. After I said this they laughed again.

Afterwards we went back to our room. A few minutes later a man called on our phone and asked if we had a problem with the Spa. We explained him again. And he started to laugh and put us on hold. I hang up. A few minutes later a woman called us and asked us again if there were any problems with the Spa.

Anyway, of course you need to be aware that there are cultural differences between what you are used from home and Japan. But I have never ever expected such a rude behaviour by hotel staff before. So, quite unprofessional behaviour. And, bear in mind that this is an "english hotel" in Kyoto. So, I would have definitely expected more from an upscale hotel.

The hotel Monterey opened in Kyoto in March 07 so it is still brand new.
We stayed there for a week in July 07 and were quite pleased with the hotel.

The hotel is located 50 meters away from the subway station Karasuma Oike. Yet, you don t really notice it despite the fact it is a huge building cos the hotel sign is ridiculously small and so is the hotel entrance. I guess they had to do with the building layout because the entrance is really tiny and badly designed compared to the number of rooms and guests of the hotel. There s not even a real lobby !

Rooms are a bit small but well you never expect big rooms in Japan anyway. The hotel being new, so are the rooms so they are among the nicest i ve seen in Kyoto so far.
Staff is always polite and nice (japanese standard) though as usual male staff is far less competent and friendly than female staff, but that seems to be the rule in Japanese hotels anyway so we are used to it.
There is a great Spa/Sento (japanese bath) on the last floor of the hotel. Entrance is not free but definitely worth a visit if you stay there.
Location can be an issue with this hotel despite the fact it is right next to one of the main subway station and next to Sanjo, one of the main street of Kyoto. The fact is to get to the busy part of Sanjo and Teramachi where shops and restaurants are, you need a good 10-15mn walk which can get tiring when you do it a few times a day for many days...
And for those who are on a sightseeing trip, it is indeed not near to any main bus routes leading to the famous spots in Kyoto.
That s actually the main downfall of the hotel which is making us uncertain about whether to stay again or not at Monterey.

Rooms are newer and nicer than other hotels but the walk to the busy part of the city can really be a chore.

I think they only accept hotel guests because I didn't see anybody pay at the hot spring reception. Hotel staff put the bill to our room number instead.

Check in is 2:00pm, but if you arrive early, they can keep your bags and you can go sightseeing. If you are lucky, your room may be available early. Check out is 11:00am. Again, they will hold your baggage if you want to do more sightseeing before you leave.
