We had the most wonderful stay at Kikokuso Ryokan. This ryokan is run by the Yoshimura family, and what a wonderful, friendly and most welcoming family they are. It is within 10-15 mins walking distance from the station, on a quiet street of a main road. Everyday they would give us advice and directions to where we wanted to go....

We were a bit apprehensive because of the cost of this ryokan, but I can firmly say it was worth every penny. The family who run it are so kind and friendly, and incredibly eager to make your stay as nice as possible. We're both big people so were a bit worried about clomping around tiny rooms, but the room...

I had the absolutely pleasure in staying at this ryokan during Sakura Season (Cherry Blossoms Season)! It was home away from home!! This ryokan is family run. From the start, the family was super welcoming and sweet about everything! We arrived earlier than the check in time and they let us leave our luggage so that we can explore Kyoto....

The family is very attentive and accommodating beyond the norm, you will never be wanting for anything. They were always very helpful, welcoming and kind, and always there to greet you as you came back from your journey. e.g. My girlfriend became a little sick during our stay, and helped to recommend what to buy, where to buy, etc. They...

This is one of my favorite experiences, and I don't think I would have enjoyed Kyoto as much if I hadn't stayed here. My husband and I stayed here for two nights on our honeymoon. You must try a ryokan experience. This ryokan was run by three loving people. Our room was on the 2nd floor overlooking a courtyard with...

The inn is managed by a very lovely and cute family. Once you checked in, the host will ask your time preference for dinner, breakfast and usage of onsen. Dinner is served in the room. You can choose to have breakfast in your room or on the 1st floor where you will be seated in a special room next to...

I think this place is actually not a Ryokan. It is very small with only maybe 3 or 4 rooms. Shared bathroom. And a bit confusing if I need to reserve the bathroom in the morning or not. I stayed in big room downstairs with garden view. But it is a bit funny that you have to open your room's...

My husband and I spend 1 night at this beautiful traditional place (6th of May to 7th of May). Our room was in the second floor and we had a nice view of the beautiful little Japanese garden. It was great experience, very clean and the staff were "super-kind". the breakfast was amazing and everything was perfect. When you are...

Really a highlight of japanese culture. Very small, but so authentic. Close to Kyoto station. Breakfast was a highlight. Very friendly owners who all spoke English. Only problem was the lack of locks on doors, but it was so intimate it didn't matter.

This was a lovely Ryokan just a short taxi ride away from Kyoto Station. It is run by a wonderful family who is very welcoming to their guests. We are a family of 4 and all of us were able to relax and have a wonderful time. It is a traditional Ryokan where we were made tea in our room...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
