This is fantastic hotel! The location was perfect, very convenient. Close to the train railway Hankyu Line station (You get off at Karasuma station). You get out of Exit #20, once on street level you turn left and the hotel is right there a couple of stores down. There are a few other Toyoko Inns in Kyoto, but this one is the best one location wise, close to the shops, markets and bus stops (that tourists will use).

I have stayed at 3 of these Toyoko Inns around Osaka and Kyoto and I have found them all to be great. They all have the same standard and the rooms are the same set up. Rooms are small, but this is what all hotels in Japan are like.

The great this is, each room has free internet connection. They provide the LAN cable in each room and the internet is quite fast. They also have free computers and internet in the Lobby (this is also for all Toyoko inns around Japan).

Toilets have bidets which are seats that can wash your bottom.

Toyoko inns also give guests free breakfast each morning. Rice balls, miso soup, tea/coffee. Breakfast is from 7am-9.30am.

Check in is at 4pm. check out 10am. But you can always leave your bags if you arrive early or leave late.

You must pay once you check in, and the staff at the desks are all women, hotel manager is a woman. They are all friendly.

The hotel has a laundry machine, but the instructions are all in Japanese. They have a vending machine which is well priced compared to outside.

This hotel is located on the shopping strip with the Nishi market just behind Daimaru dept store. In Kyoto, the bus is the way to travel. and there is a bus stop right in front of the hotel (for end journeys it stops there). To go to the famous temples, you need to catch the bus from the opposite side of the street. You can buy an all day bus city pass for 500yen which is good for tourists. You can buy this from the ticket machines at the subway station near the hotel. Just a note, go to the correct machine, it will have a picture of the ticket with 500 yen. To buy a ticket, you must insert the money first, then buttons will light up which tickets you can purchase. Then select.

In summary, I would definitely stay there again.

This hotel is part of a large chain of good, basic Japanese style hotels. the rooms are small and basic. It is close to shopping, historic sites, and transportation. In the US an inexpensive hotel can mean a rundown, poorly maintained property, but that is not the case in Japan. These hotels are clean and well maintained. The free breakfast is Japanese style

Toyoko Inn is a large Japanese hotel chain of basic hotels. The rooms are small but adequate, very clean and adequately equipped. Very typical of Japanese high standard of hygiene, effectively efficient and very affordably priced. They provide free wifi though the reception quality varies from poor to excellent. Basic Japanese breakfast is included with free coffee! The locations are generally central and good. I have stayed in this and in four other cities and would recommend this chain for the value conscious traveller.

The rooms are absolutely tiny, but the price is hard to beat. Room was spotlessly clean and everything advertised. Free breakfast every AM was quite passable but wholly unremarkable. Breakfast offerings were 4 types of onigiri, miso soup, cabbage sald, rolls, pickles, tea, wretched coffee. Toilet/shower room is a tiny self-contained prefab. It's really a minimalist lodging experience, BUT, for the price, it's far more comfortable and clean and private than, say, a hostel.

Coin laundry is a nice win. There were 3 washers, 3 dryers during our stay.

Wired internet in room worked great.

The Toyoko Inn Shijo Karasuma Hotel fitted our needs perfectly on a recent 2 week trip. We stayed there mid-trip and appreciated the coin laundry facilities, the free internet, and easy location with immediate access to subway, bus lines, etc..

The rooms are tiny, but luggage (more or less) fits under the bed. If you have fairly flat luggage rather than duffel bag style, it should fit quite easily under the bed. The mattress might be the hardest thing I've ever slept on.

Free Japanese breakfast in the mornings. All the normal amenities of hotels. Two free english language movies in your room.

They clean from 10-4 and you can either ask them to do your room by a certain time or pass on the room cleaning so that you can access your room during this time. If you do not say anything to them, you may be barred from your room until 4 pm, which could be annoying. We chose not to have them clean our room as it was only a 2 night stay. Rooms are spotlessly clean.

For about $80 per night, this was a good value and we would be likely to use Toyoko Inn on a future trip. Given the cleanliness, location and amenities, I think it's above average for a budget hotel.

Stayed here for 5 nights, was in a great location close to transport and city. Convinience store next door was super useful for snacks and forgotten items. Laundry services were good and clean, 200Y for wash and 100Y for 30min dry - detergent was 30Y. Staff were very nice and wifi/breakfast was included. Doors use keys which need to be left at the front desk - a common practice in Japan. Used their luggage forwarding service and was very easy. We spoke japanese so never had any issues but they seemed to have a decent grasp of basic english and were super polite. There is only one elevator which causes inconvenience at peak times, we used the fire stairs at breakfast time as it was so much easier but fine the rest of the tome. Breakfast area is a bit cramped due to having such a small hotel footprint but was manageable. Would stay here again!

This hotel is located at the corner of 2 main streets in Kyoto, Shijo and Karasuma. Very convenient location. It is technically a stone's throw away from the metro/subway station. Convenience store, drug store, post office and tons of restaurants are within walking distance. I had a twin room for 2 nights. Clean and basic. Everything worked in the room. Breakfast was served in the morning with choices of small salads, miso soup, onigiri (rice balls), tea and coffee. It was high season when I went so it was not easy to secure a non-smoking twin room. Plan ahead . I would recommend staying at this hotel and I would stay here again.

This is a cheap hotel in Kyoto, at 15 minutes on foot by Kyoto central Station and less then 10 minutes on foot by the city center.
Room is little but contains: one bed (less then a double bed), one desk, one bedside table and one closet, one tv. Bathroom is essential but there is everything you need.
Breakfast is free and it's a Japanese breakfast. If you like continental breakfast there is Caffè Veloce, Starbucks and a boulangerie, near there for your breakfast.
Nice stay for a cheap hotel.
In the room and in the hall there are interenet free point access and wirless, only in the hall.

Stayed in this hotel for 4 nites last May 2009 with family. The room with attached bathroom altho small with not much space to move around were clean and well maintained. The breakfast (included in price) served in the mornings were japanese style and sufficiently good. Location of subway was about 5mins walk and was easy to walking around.

Yes! Double room has all queen size beds. Simple setting but still comfortable. Room size of the hotel is also very typical but as a tourist I think it’s goid enough.

They do not have parking space outside their hotel because its in the heart of the city. Try Diamaru department store which located on the same street. They have underground parking Lot.
