We stayed 4 nights / 3 days and loved it. We had two rooms - one for our 3 kids (10, 11 and 13) and one for the adults. Both Western style (beds) and Japanese style (futons) are offered, but we had Japanese style. The kids found it a genuine cultural experience. The rooms are simple, comfortable and beautiful, but with a very modern bathroom. The communal areas (around the reception) were lovely, offering places to sit and drink tea, play games, read a book etc, and there was a nice bar area also. The baths (onsen) are fabulous and we had no trouble booking them when we wanted. The breakfast was simple but very tasty (mainly western style), and the staff were extremely helpful. It's well located, about a 15 min walk from the main shopping street and a bit further to the old city. Recommended.

We stayed here one night whilst in Kyoto because we wanted to experience a traditional Japanese Ryokan. We booked the twin level room with beautiful small garden terrace and were greeted graciously by the wonderful staff especially Laura who was really helpful and kind to us. Whilst we enjoyed the experience overall, we had quite a few issues with our room, where the air-conditioning unit could not be understood by us or the staff. Additionally the fridge provided in the room had to be unplugged in the middle of the night as it was making a loud noisy vibration. As a result we had a disturbed sleep. The hotel were very gracious when we raised these concerns at checkout and we would still highly recommend this hotel if you wish to experience a ryokan.

Recent reviews cover just about everything good about this place. We took advantage of a free 30 minute calligraphy class offered by the ryokan, it's that kind of place, they offer extra. Good restaurant recommendations, Antibes just down the street could be in Barcelona, and very good if you want a break from Japanese cuisine. Only yen 1200 taxi ride from the station. Dont miss the food hall at the big department store, Matsumishabaya.

Great value and location with English-speaking staff. Highly recommend! We stayed in the Sakura suite, which had both western beds and tatami mats. The room was very large by Japanese standards and was stocked will all the amenities we needed. The staff was friendly and helpful and they offer a ton of services at low cost, including laundry, luggage delivery, onsen, and breakfast. We tried three of the different breakfasts and all were fantastic. There's also a great little bakery two blocks away called Panraku that everyone in our group loved (try the curry bun). Walking distance to train stations and the main areas of Gion and Nishiki Market.

The Kyomachiya Ryokan Sakura Urushitei in Kyoto is located amazingly close to many of Kyoto’s well known areas. Also through use of online and simple exploring the area offers numerous transit options including Kyoto bus service and train service, often within a 5-15 minute walk from the property.

Stepping into the facility really transports one back to a more ancient and peaceful time. The staff were one of the main highlights of our stay and each of them are fluent in many languages including Japanese, English, French and German. Wonderful interactions with staff definitely have me booking this same Ryokan in the future!

My stay was for 4 nights in the Maisonette room.
This is a relatively new ryokan and I am so happy with this choice after much research.
Firstly the staff are friendly, fun, go out of their way to assist and speak a variety of languages .
Secondly, the room was very comfortable. I slept on futon which you roll out yourself every night.the lounge area is a lovely retreat looking out on a charming garden. The stairs are steep so not recommended for those with mobility issues.
Thirdly the ambience of the place is cozy , welcoming and very Japanese. The common areas include kotatsu seating, and iori as well as western style tables and chairs. The soaking bath -which requires a reservation is divine.
And finally I enjoyed a variety of breakfast styles which were nutritious and filling. The staff can recommend places to eat for dinner.
A fantastic place to stay while exploring the treasures of Kyoto

Fantastic traditional hotel, especially for the value. Breakfast service can be a bit slow but it’s delicious. Rooms are clean, comfy, and have everything you need. The Onsen is not really an onsen, like a larger size bathtub- don’t bother.

Our Japan itinerary includes stops I. Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, respectively. Even after 5 days in Tokyo, it felt like we were in Asia but not necessarily in Japan until we arrived in Kyoto. Staying in Kyomachiya Ryokan was part of that experience. We enjoyed sleeping on the mats and walking on tatamis. They provided beautiful yukata robes for us to wear. The reception staff was especially courteous and helpful. Edz in particular helped us reserve spots in a tea ceremony class at Koto near the Kinkakuji temple. The hotel also provided umbrellas and gentleman staff member helped us heat up instant noodles for a late nite snack. Great experience. And walking distance to Nishiki Covered Market, Shinkyogoku Shopping district and Gion (geisha district).

Beautiful hotel in the traditional style close to the heart of Kyoto. Staff were very welcoming and we really appreciated the complimentary drinks prior to check in after an all night bus from Tokyo. So glad we booked the Sake experience at it was brilliant! Jason the host was charming and very knowledgeable and Pierre kept our glasses full! We booked a junior suite for 4 adults and we were impressed by how much room there was. My 6” 4 son found the futon perfect for his size and very comfortable!! Please do pick up an info sheet from reception as we dined out at Jojo’s whose speciality was okonomyaki and it was amazing!

We had a traditional room, so can't comment on the plugs, but agree with the previous comment to contact the hotel - the team are super responsive and helpful so will do what they can to accommodate your needs. It's a fab place!

We got off at the Karasuma stop. It's about a 10 min walk with luggage from there.

The building walls seemed to be regular brick-and-mortar. And, as said before, the room door is a regular hotel (thick, wood) door. You could also ask the hotel for a corner room - less walls to "share" the snoring with other guests!

Yes, our bedroom had a private bath, with large shower. There is a seven eleven (convenience store/supermarket) two blocks from the hotel, and a metro station three blocks from the hotel. The location is very good in this respect. The Kyoto train station is not within walking distance, but the metro takes you there (second stop), or a cab ride (cost you around $15).
