This is the best hotel we have stayed in Japan so far. Location cannot be better - restaurant, cafes, shopping all around the corner. It is also within 10 mins walk to Gion where sightseeing can be done. The room is very spacious, clean and equipped with modern amenities. We stayed in a studio with a Japanese bedroom - perfect for our baby who is sensitive to noises. They provided us with a baby crib and a baby bath tub. Before we arrived, they have helped us book dinner and provided us with info about airport transfer. They also helped us book limousine from Kyoto to Kansai airport and taxi from hotel to bus stop. They are responsive to our emails and always think one step further for us. I just cannot wait to stay in this hotel with my family again!

My parents and I stayed at Room 101 for one night before we leave Japan. The stay was filled with surprises all very pleasant. The staffs were extremely kind and helpful even before I got there. I can tell they were trying their utmost to make our stay as enjoyable as possible and it was.

The location was perfect. With only 10 minutes of walk you can get to historic area, bustling shopping district including traditional market and more. But we didn't have to leave the room at all. Overlooking nice stream we could easily stay the whole day in the room enjoying the view and relay. The room was very spacious and with well thought-of amenities.

I would love to come back to Aoi Hotel Kyoto for a longer stay next time.

We stayed at this hotel for 4 days and 3 nights and looked forward to coming back to our room every single evening. After the hustle and bustle of sightseeing in Kyoto this place was a relaxing welcome. In fact we wanted to stay in the hotel room most of the time, especially during the rainy days.

We had a large room that had a separate Japanese style bedroom with two comfortable futon matresses on the tatami mat floor. This room had a sliding door to make it private. In the main part of the room were another two western style super single beds, which was equally comfortable as the futons. Very well appointed bedding and linen, as was everything else in the room, from furnishing to the TV, Bose player, small kitchenette and of course bathroom with separate automated wooden bathtub and shower. Also in the bathroom was a washing machine cum dryer.

We were 2 adults and 3 children (with one child under 6 free). So if booking through online we selected 4 people as the 5th, a child under 6 was free. The hotel response via email was efficient and their service in person was excellent. Nothing to fault and nothing was too much trouble for them. The hotel only has 6 guest rooms so that means guests are taken care of well. However pls note they do not have room service other than breakfast that has to be pre ordered in advance, which was not an issue for us given the number of cafes, restaurants and mini markets within easy walking distance from the hotel.

For a first time visitor to Kyoto, the location of this hotel is perfect. Close to underground train lines and subway lines and good shopping. The hotel is really lovely, very spacious by any standard, not just Japanese, and is tastefully decorated, not a typical sterile hotel.

Would highly recommend all types of guests and famiilies to stay here, especially if you would like a lovely designed hotel room. We requested the highest floor with view of the river and hillsides where we could see part of the Kiyomizudera temple in the distance. Our room had a huge balcony with a table and four chairs to lounge in and watch the day go by on a rainy day. But be sure to prepare your own drinks and snacks when in the room. Also request during check in for your water bottles to be replenished free of charge and your room to be freshened up daily, otherwise they may think you don't require it as we specified that during check in, just in case.

Absolutely loved our stay here, with free and good wifi connection. Wanted to stay an extra night but they were fully booked so be sure to book early! Would love to come back here again. We really got both east and west experience with the Japanese room within the main room. And space was not an issue at all.

We hope you will enjoy this hotel as much as we are...checking out tomorrow..

Kyoto is one of my favorite destination, and Aoi is my top choice of accommodation in the city. This is my 3rd time staying with Aoi; I've stayed twice in Aoi Ayanokoji-bashi (which is excellent despite with its quirks), but on the 2nd stay in Ayanokoji-bashi, I had to split it with Aoi Hotel due to unavailability of Ayanokoji-bashi.

I have to say that Ayanokoji-bashi wins in terms of charm (full length window that opened to Takasegawa canal to enjoy your downtime in Kyoto, or private hanami if you came in the Sakura season). However Aoi Hotel wins in terms of room practicality. The room was spacious, came with extras like washing machine and (Japanese tech!) bathtub and dryer. Extra bonus point also for separating the toilet and bath area. However, in the double room, the view from the small window is not as mesmerizing as in Ayanokoji-bashi (unless maybe you get the big room in the Hotel that comes with balcony).

As with all Aoi, the amenities are excellent. Tamanohada toiletries, delicious Houji-cha and beautiful teapot and tea cups. Comfortably firm bed with crisp white linens are just a few of my favorites.

Location wise, both Aoi is right across each other so they enjoy the same premium location in Kyoto. 2-3 minutes walk to both Hankyu line (Kawaramachi) and Keihan line (Gion-Shijo). Minutes walk to the bustling Shijo-dori, with department stores like Takashimaya, Marui and Daimaru if you ever need that.
Aoi Hotel doesn't come with traditional hotel benefits, like breakfast. However, my husband much prefer to eat local, like tamago-kake gohan in nearby Suki-ya. Tons of restaurants line Takasegawa and Kiyamachi/Pontocho (the famous Roan Kikunoi kaiseki is just a stone throw's away). From fast food to famed Japanese drugstore, you get it all within minutes walk.

I love that I can walk to both sides of Shijo-dori; Shijo-Karasuma area to dine at Cocon Karasuma (try the Kimukatsu tonkatsu in the basement, heavenly) or nearby bookshop. I also like to spend my time shopping and admiring local goods in Teramachi shotengai (shopping arcade) and nearby Nishiki market. Last but not least, the Higashiyama (Eastern Mountain) of Kyoto. Gion, Yasaka Shrine, up until Nene-no-michi, Ninenzaka, Sannenzaka, Kiyomizu-zaka and the majestic Kiyomizu-dera are all within reach.

Negative side, if any, it's not that far but there's no direct train connection to Kyoto station, but I only occasionally venture there for dining or taking shinkansen. Bus or taxi works well for this purpose (there's a taxi stand nearby Aoi Hotel).

Aoi comes with my highest recommendation.

This is a new hotel (just a few months old) that is right on the Kamo River. It is operated by the same company that runs Aoi Kyoto Stay which manages and rents homes around Kyoto for vacationers. If one of their homes is not available, please consider this hotel. There are only about 5 or 6 rooms. We stayed in 201 which has a balcony overlooking the Kamo River. Beautiful view. Room sleeps four which was great with our two kids. Has a kitchenette. Great bathroom. Pictures on the website are accurate. Location is great. Restaurants are everywhere. A Fresco (small grocery store) was across the river five minutes walk. A Family Mart store was one minute away. Gion was across the river (5-10 min walk). Saw two Geiko or Maiko just a few blocks from the hotel in Pontocho quickly walking to their next gig. They fly by so you have to be alert to spot them. Location is simply perfect if you want to be central to everything, don't mind some walking, and are comfortable using subway. Occasionally took taxis which were usually about 650 to 1200 JPY. Hotel staff were always available and English was adequate.

Housecleaning service was great. Separated room with Tatami mats was great for the kids but mats are new and the smell still strong which bothered the kids a little. Also the shower/tub area had a slight odor but nothing that would keep me from coming back here. Everything is brand new as mentioned above. You can check out some other reviews on Booking.com since this will be the first TripAdvisor review for this place.

Summary: Small hotel with 5-6 rooms. Small front desk area. No bell service. They do have some room service you can arrange where they deliver food to you from local restaurants they have an account with. Did not utilize. Great little place in a great location and great for families of four that want the convenience of a kitchenette. However, with the balcony and view of Kyoto and the river at night, could definitely be a romantic getaway.

I have been to Kyoto many times and have stayed in both traditional ryokan as well as excellent western style hotels. The Aoi Hotel Kyoto was something different and, next to staying at the Tawaraya, my favorite. It was almost like having your own apartment in the best part of Kyoto. The hotel is very small but our suite was spacious. A large main room with two double beds, a generous living area, and a kitchen/dining area, a separate tatami room with two additional beds, a modern bathroom with a deep cedar Japanese tub and a separate powder room. All with a private balcony with amazing views overlooking the Kamo-gawa river. It was sakura season and absolutely lovely. The hotel is very new so everything was in perfect condition. The staff were extremely gracious and helpful. They helped arrange tickets to visit the famous moss temple, Saiho-ji, before our arrival, organized a car for us, made reservations at a Yudofu restaurant...Nothing was too much trouble. The location of the hotel is perfect. On a quiet street by the river, right between the main downtown shopping district and the Gion area. This is not a traditional hotel. They do not serve meals and do not have any central reception areas. But the accommodations, location and service more than make up for this.

Having had the experience of top end hotels such as Intercontinental in Tokyo ... We found that this hotel beats this.
The location is great- over the river is Gion and the streets near the hotel have very nice restaurants such as "the leek" and the french cocktail place (almost) next door.
The hotel had great communications with us prior to our arrival and upon.
When we arrived the gent who showed us the room and the manual to operate the washing machine/ dryer. I liked the fact that he took his time and sat down with us in the room. It was not just an over the counter service. They also gave us the direction and contact numbers of the hotel for the taxi drivers (some didn't know where this place by name alone)- so that was handy.
The building is near new, the bathroom is amazing and the used very nice body wash/ shampoos . The design of the rooms is minimalistic and they had a bose player and some books scattered around . Great atmosphere ! The bed had this cloud like sheets !
There is no breakfast offered on premises but why would you want to ? As you exit on your right, less than 5 min is a shopping area where you can get anything from macdonalds to cafes .
You pay for location , the service and the quality .

We chose this hotel because of the recommendation of another couple who had a really great experience with the hotel. And I do have to agree. The room was spacious. Their amenities were good. The hotel staff was more than accommodating. They showed us how to operate the washing machine, dryer, and the bathroom (very important!), as they are quite hightech and the buttons are in Japanese.

But please bear in mind that this hotel does not have a restaurant/breakfast room, or swimming pool, or lounge.

They helped us arranged for a Kaiseki dinner. And actually recommended that we try the restaurant that is literally next to the hotel, called Matsunoya. I did some googling afterwards and found our that they were given a Michelin Star in 2013. Food was great there and the chef and his wife really made the kaiseki dinner even more fun and personal. The GM of the hotel even sent us off with some cute trinkets thanking us for staying at the hotel.

Location was very central and very close to many different things you'd want to do in downtown Kyoto, all within walking distance. There are plenty of cafes, restaurant, even a McDonald (if you choose to do that!), near by. We love the small river that across the street from the hotel. The Sakura was in bloom and the whole experience was magical.

I would definitely stay again at the Aoi Kyoto Hotel.

What a swell spot.
The room was lovely.
We had a nice view of the river and would have our coffee in the morning watching people stroll by and the birds hopping around in the water.
Location was pretty ideal: Quiet but close to the metro, restaurants, and shopping.

Radiant heat in the floors. An almost fully equipped kitchen with coffee and small refrigerator. They don’t have a restaurant on-premise (or really, anything other than the rooms) so we’d buy yogurt and things the night before and make coffee (provided) in the morning. A number of convenience stores nearby.
Washing machine for mid-vacation cleaning.
Handsome bathroom although maybe a bit dark for putting on makeup (or per my wife). Fancier robot toilet than other hotels.

Lovely linens. The bed was comfortable but will be a bit on the firm side if coming from a plush hotel before your visit here.

Room had a good sized tatami area as well.

Desk staff were friendly and efficient.

My wife and I stayed at Aoi Hotel Kyoto for five (5) days in November, it was perfect. The location was fantastic, walking distance to Gion and many, many restaurants. Our room looked over the river, extremely well appointed. It was extremely spacious and perfect for a longer stay. The hotel is similar to staying in a modern apartment or condominium. It is not a full service hotel but the staff is extremely helpful. I would highly recommended staying at Aoi Hotel Kyoto.

Dear Hsiao T, Thank you very much for your inquiry. We are happy to tell you that we do provide Yamato courier service in case you want to send your luggage to any location inside of Japan. May it be the next hotel or the airport, we will gladly assist you with filling out the slips we provide at our hotel. However, please note that you will have to pay for any resulting sending fees and that we usually prepare slips that are for payment upon arrival inside of your room. However, depending on the destination they might not accept payment upon arrival and in this case we would need your credit card details since we will need to do payment upon shipping and we would then withdraw the resulting fee from your credit card. We hope that this answered your question. Should there be anything unclear or if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Kind regards, Aoi Hotel Kyoto
