I stayed in Noku Kyoto from 3rd to 7th August, 2020 with my family. We had 2 rooms on the 6th floor and the stay was fantastic. The Noku Kyoto is a very beautiful hotel with tasteful Japanese art on each floor and in each room. It is very well maintained and our rooms were spotless. Our stay included breakfast. There was great variety including a vegetarian omelette and a halal option. The Noku Kyoto is in a great location only 4 stops on the subway from Kyoto station. It is right beside the Kyoto Imperial Palace, walking distance from Nijo-Jo and a short bus journey from Ninenzaka and Kyomizudera. It is also on the bus route to Saga Arashiyama. We visited all these places as well as Fushimi Inari and Sanjusangendo. Finally, if you are a runner, don’t forget to ask the general manager for the best routes for a morning run to the local shrines and Kamogawa River.

We stayed here 3 nights. Location is good, right beside a subway exit and close to Nijo castle and Palace gardens. We were unexpectedly upgraded to a premium room on the top floor, which was nice. The room was pleasant, overlooking a roof garden, beds were comfortable and bathroom was good. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. The hotel provides a map of the surrounding area with locations of attractions and local restaurants. Breakfast was taken in the cafe on the ground floor, so we helped ourselves to tea, coffee, juice and cereal and ordered hot food from a menu. There is a handicrafts tour from the hotel on Tuesdays and Fridays, so we joined one of these and visited a lacquerware shop where we saw a demonstation of the decoration process and how to tell the difference between wood and plastic and an incense shop. This was very interesting and we felt it was worthwhile.

Excellent location, 1 minute from the Imperial Palace park. Being next door to a tube station exit in many cities wouldn’t be good, here’s it’s ideal - no noise, no rubbish, no nothing and only 4 stops to the main Kyoto train station. V quiet hotel, lovely service. Only two ‘faults’ : breakfast is a v fixed menu of 4 choices and we only had 3 coat—hangers for 3 of us for 6 nights. No other complaints at all.

A mixed bag.
The room was very spacious, particularly for Japan , well equipped with fridge , safe etc.
However the bathroom was on a slope with quite a dangerous step , no wet room just a bath/shower .
The air con was poor , quite warm in March , one does wonder what it would be like in Kyoto summer.
We were on floor 2 (UK 1st floor ) our “ view” which would have been of a wall was obscured by a bamboo screen…. the room was very dark .
Breakfast was limited to 3 choices , the room was very cramped and busy but the food was fine .
Apart from our room hotel had more of a cafe/hostel feel.
No evening restaurant and it was hard to find somewhere to eat in the locality , the limited choices were very busy, however we did mange , sitting on the floor a couple of times in an Izakaya.
There is a nice Nepalese curry place near.
A better bet than travelling to Kyoto where everywhere had huge queues.

Location is literally between exit 4 of the Marutomachi subway station and a family mart , lots of supermarkets locally . Big seven eleven opposite park entrance.
Other than Palace and Castle nothing else in locality, 4 stops on Metro to Kyoto, best to rely on that rather than taxis .
Imperial Place and garden walking distance , free entry , recommended but opening days a bit hit and miss.
Nijo castle highly recommended, allegedly walkable but we took metro changing from Karasuma to Tozei line .
Gion ( incredibly busy ) also easily reachable by metro in minutes using Pasmo card .
Not the greatest hotel but room was a nice haven to return to after hot busy sightseeing.

Dear mikefre3, Thank you for providing such a detailed review of your stay at Noku. Your valuable feedback will be shared with the entire Noku team. We have exciting plans to add a restaurant and bar by autumn, so look out for announcements about in the near future. As you would have noticed, our Cafe is only open for breakfast and during daytime hours, so a new restaurant will greatly expand dining options for guests. There are a great many restaurants in our immediate area with more being added all the time, and our Front Desk is happy to assist. Rest assured that our air conditioning is very effective during Kyoto's hot summer months, and also during the cold of winter. A major upgrade will happen early next year that will greatly improve our in-room air conditioning all year round. Thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts about your stay at Noku. Best regards, Keren

Nice modern hotel, spacious rooms So why the one star review? Because we booked for three - myself, my wife and our 10-year old son - and the room says "2 plus extrabed" and we had to pay another 20,000 yen to actually get sheets on it. They actually expected our son to sleep in the same bed with a parent, despite the beds being single beds. I'm just speechless that the Japanese seem to pull this trick in their hotels.

Dear conficient, Thankfully we were able to solve your problem to your satisfaction by giving you a full refund of the charge for the extra bed. As our Front Office Manager informed you during your stay, this issue was due to a communication breakdown between you and your travel agent. That is why the sofa bed was not prepared for you in advance. Bedding is normally free for children 12 and under and will be prepared before check-in when it is requested for by the travel agent or by the guest at the time of booking. I also humbly suggest that instead of posting a review directly after such an incident, that you kindly raise the matter with hotel management first. We were happy to swiftly resolve the issue once the full details were known. Thank you for raising this matter and we will now be on the lookout for similar bookings such as yours to make sure there are no repeats. Best regards, Keren

After ending our Japan trip in Kyoto after travelling via Tokyo, Hakone, Hiroshima and Osaka we were excited to have a stay in this hotel. The previous reviews were great.
Upsides, the hotel room was very big by Japanese standards and had free coffee etc and was very comfortable.
The downsides, the location was very far out there wasn’t much to do and after walking all day, it felt painful to get back to.
The Japanese hospitality that we had so enjoyed in previous hotels was lacking here. My husband had a birthday (not a big deal) but whereas other hotels had acknowledged it, the staff here didn’t say a word. The front desk team barely looked up when we stood there and the cleaning team were much more friendlier!
Wouldn’t recommend if you want and are or used to Japanese hospitality.

The hotel is very conveniently situated above a metro station, so you can zip down to central Kyoto with no fuss (tip - we never found a machine vending the bus and subway day cards at that station but you can a buy in advance at Kyoto Station and activate them as you need to).
We had two interconnecting rooms and found we had plenty of space. There were some snacks with the tea things which was a nice touch.
The rooms were nicely decorated, bathroom on the small side but did have space to lay out your toiletries.
The only downer was the inclusive breakfast. There is a board by the lifts in the evening which gives you estimated waiting times for the morning - eg between u
7 and 7:30, no wait, 7:30-8 15 mins etc. the cafe is tiny and they just don’t seem to be able to cope. If there was a coffee pot placed on the “buffet”, there were no cups. I confess we resorted to the McDonald’s over the road for the rest of our stay.

Echoing certain other reviews, and noting management’s plans to add a restaurant soon, I think we were underwhelmed by the Noku, although I must note that the front desk staff were excellent, courteous and helpful. The ineffective aircon needs addressing, and the unreliable laundry service was a disappointment. Breakfast was understandably limited given the size of the place, although the cooked options were good and swiftly delivered. A general refurbishment seems to be required, but the rooms are well sound proofed.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. Your comments are well noted. A restaurant and bar are planned to open in the near future. The after effects of the pandemic is behind the delay as chefs and staff are still nearly impossible to hire. But it is hoped that these manning problems will ease in the coming months and we can proceed with our plans. Best regards.

The hotel room was superb, spacious and clean. We stayed on a top floor in one of the superior rooms. The views across to the park and the mountains were good, albeit with other buildings and the busy junction between. The room had excellent facilities and a great range of products, which were replaced daily. Staff were helpful and there was always a member of the team who could speak English, which was much appreciated.
Breakfast was served at the table with a reasonable choice of options including western and Japanese. The hotel did not have a bar, lounge or an evening restaurant.
The hotel location was good for the Castle and the Imperial Museum and some of the other attractions. However, the famous busy older streets were a very long walk away, which we had not realised in advance. Taxis were cheap and in abundance.

Hi are there irons available for the room?
Answer from Noku_Hotels
Kyoto, Japan
Thanks for your question! There are two ways to get to Noku from Kyoto Station. The easiest is to take a taxi. Especially if you have a lot of luggage. There is a cab rank outside of the Shinkansen part of the station. Just follow the signs and you will find it. Normally costs about JPY1,500. Or you can take the subway, also easy. We are on the Karasuma Line (there is only one subway line in Kyoto Station). Tickets cost 260 yen for adults. Head in the direction of 各停 Kokusaikaikan, and get off at Marutamachi. Only 4 stops and 7 minutes. Take exit 4 and we are a 30 second walk. Or exit 5 that has an elevator and a few minutes away across the street. See you in December! Keren General Manager

Do you have a crib for a toddler, 11 months old?
Answer from Noku_Hotels
Kyoto, Japan
Greetings from Noku Kyoto! Yes, we do have baby cribs available that will suit a toddler. And for no charge. But as we have a limited number of cribs, it would be ideal if you can order one in advance. Either via your travel agent if you booked that way, or directly to the hotel by email if you booked direct. I hope this helps. We look forward to welcoming you to Noku soon. Best regards, Keren

Hello! This is the Noku General Manager. My apologies for the inconvenience. I suggest that you try the following on the Noku Kyoto website: 1. Go to the Noku Kyoto homepage 2. Click on the 3 bars on the top right corner 3.Look for "Contact us" and then click on "Get in Touch". 4. Then fill out and send the required information in the form I tested the above as well as the two email addresses and they all worked for me. May I also suggest that you check your Junk or Spam folders to see if our replies are there? If still no luck then please let here me know how we can assist you. Unfortunately I am unable to post my email address in a response on TripAdvisor. With apologies. Best regards, Keren

As mentioned previously, with thanks to Rebah1, our rooms have air-conditioning. Unfortunately there are no ceiling fans, but we do have some pedestal fans which can be loaned out to to guests for free if you prefer fan cooling. And depending on the room, the window may be able to be opened. Hope this answers your question. See you in Kyoto next year!
