We spent two weeks in a 2 bedroom family suite. It was very spacious, perfect for a family of four. There are two bathrooms, one en suite, and both looked updated and modern, Beds were comfortable. Two balconies. Air conditioning more than sufficient for a unit of this size.  The unit was clean and comfortable. Two elevators for convenience. When we used Grab the front door staff logged the drivers license plate making us feel they cared about guests security.  All the staff we interacted with were courteous and helpful from the front desk, security, housekeeping, breakfast severs, pool attendant, driver (airport transfer) etc.

I like the location though admittedly it's not glamorous. Just a few minutes walk to the big Robinson's mall down the street where you can get everything you might want or need. Under 10 minutes to the LRT (Pedro Gil), There's a good restaurant next door (Mr. Poon's), Even Intramuros is within a walkable 2k or so. Although it's a busy area for vehicular and pedestrian traffic the hotel faces a street with controlled traffic and we weren't bothered by noise.

I'd gladly stay here again but there are a couple of things to note. In house laundry services are available but the prices seem very high. It can be cheaper to buy new clothes at the mall if you have the luggage space and can defer washing until you get home (or find an alternative in the neighbourhood which I'm sure there is). If you want to ensure you'll be able to get a refund if you have to cancel a reservation, consider using a 3rd party booking (OTA) service. We booked direct with the hotel. A week or two before our trip we had to cancel. Although the hotel web site implies no issues with cancelling I discovered that they didn't seem willing to process a refund. Everything worked out in the end because we were able to re-schedule our trip and they did honour the original payment (in full) that had been made but for a while it looked disconcertingly like we might lose a large sum of money. The hotel web site should be very clear and state their policy around refunds.

Great hotel. Good size rooms cleaned daily and left bottles of water everyday which was a lovely touch. Good location in regards to robinsons mall but thats it everything else is a good walk away and for white people that isnt safe. Only complaint we have is the breakfast. We ordered pancakes every morning without the fried egg and asked for hash browns instead and ye charged us which I thought was poor customer service to say the least. Other than that it was fantastic including the staff you guys couldn’t be faulted always happy and friendly!!!

Very comfortable room/bed. The staff are as excellent as ever and the breakfast quality and choice are great 👍👍 . Also,a lovely pool. The location is great being 5mins walk from a large mall and an easy distance from the bay. The perfect spot for a stay in Manila.

Security team needs to learn good customer service! They are incompetent and act like they are the owner of the hotel. They are rude specially to those who are about to make inquiry. They even wont allow you their comfort room and would tell it's for guest only. That's stupid, what if you would like to inquire for a reservation and you need to go to the cr? Does it mean your not allowed to do so?

I stayed at the Tropicana Suites from 12-28 to 1-9 2023. The hotel was very clean and well maintained. All the staff I interacted with were very friendly and did an excellent job. I had originally booked 1 day longer than my planned stay by accident and upon checkout they promptly issued a refund. I actually had the notification by the time I was at the airport. The area around the hotel is older Manila, but plenty of activities within walking distance. I will definitely stay here again.

The hotel is well-located near several restaurants, easy access. Due to COVID- 19, I didn’t have the pool service, but the room was very clean, organized, and smelled fresh. The room is big and has a very spacious living room + kitchen. Only downside is that I got two single beds instead of a queen/king bed. Very nice concierge at front desk, and they even offer groceries to be hand-picked and delivered to your doorstep daily.

First rate hotel. Great location near Robinson's Place mall in Ermita, Manila.
An older building that has been expertly remodeled. Rooms are very large and comfortable. Kitchenettes are available in the suite rooms. A great spot for a long-term stay.
Staff is friendly and professional.
Breakfast is available, but no other food service in the hotel. Many restaurants in the nearby mall.
Highly recommended.

Hotel Name: Tropicana Apartment Hotel
Location: Manila Philippines - Ermita
Date of Stay: January 2012 (14 nights)

If you like the review please rate it as "helpful".

Overall Rating 3.5 out of 5

Location: 3.5
Room Quality: 3.5
Ambiance: 3
Facilities/Amenities: 3.5
Approach to Service: 4
Usability: 3
Value for Money: 3.5

Summary: The Tropicana is one of my long time favorites when staying in the Manila area; however it has its flaws. It is a good choice for budget oriented travelers who emphasize space, convenience and a home like feel. Those who want a modern environment or quiet surroundings may wish to consider elsewhere.

Detailed Commentary:

Positioning: An a apartment style hotel that seems particularly popular with local and korean tourists and anyone looking for a slightly longer stay.

Location 3.5
Ermita is not really the greatest area to stay in to start with. It is as gritty and urban as Manila gets with a lot of petty crime and some of the streets can be outright dangerous at night. However, if you are going to stay in the area it is a pretty good location as Ermita goes. It sits on a relatively calm side street and is less than a 5 minute walk to the very large Robinson's mall; which offers just about every type of shopping and dining experience you could want including a grocery supermarket. The Tropicana also sits roughly on the border of Melate and Ermita so you have easy access to both areas.

Room Quality 3.5/5:
The hotel is 9 stories with a lift that only reaches the eighth. I would give the studios a miss as they are dark and dingy but the one and two bedroom suites are quite huge and offer value. The downside of the rooms is that they are extremely dated and feel like they are 25+ years old. That said, they are well kept and clean. The bedroom has aircon but the rest of the unit does not. However both the bedroom and sitting area have large screened windows enabling a nice cross breeze The other downside is that ambient noise is quite high. The Hotel is shaped like a large "H" so if you stay near the lift corridor you will have people often quite noisily walking by your sitting room window . You can avoid this by staying in an end unit but you will lose a lot of wifi signal. For those wanting extra privacy you can consider the 9th floor but this will require climbing a flight of stairs. These rooms are a bit older and hotter but a fan is provided to help cool the room. The biggest noise issues concern factors beyond the control of the hotel. There is a construction site near the west wing of the hotel and although the building seem nearly completed, there was still a significant amount of noise going into the early hours of the morning, The East wing looks over smaller buildings and a school but unfortunately one of the buildings seems to contain a very loud rooster which would start crowing before sunrise every morning --- annoying enough that I was considering finding it to make my own chicken adobo. Now for the good part: The suites are very large. Each room is slightly different but typically feature a bedroom with large walk out balcony, bathroom, living room (Sofa, two chairs, Old style TV), Dining area and full size kitchen (electric Stove, water heater, Sink, Toaster oven, Full size refrigerator, Cupboards and cooking and eating utensils). Everything is very dated but works and has a very homey feel.

Ambiance 3
Ambiance is a mixed bag. There is little in the way of charm or decor but the sheer size of the place gives a feeling of openness and comfort.

Facilities and Amenities 3.5/5:

There is an outdoor pool but they are quite strict when it comes to enforcing health regulations on wearing swim gear only (no shorts or t-shirts). Free wi-fi is offered. Connectivity is good near the main corridor of each floor but rooms on either end suffer in terms of signal strength. There is also a small gym. The TV is old (No flat screens here) but the channel selection is generous with over 60 channels covering all genres.

Approach to Service 4/5:
No problems here as people were always friendly and the response was quick when the toilet refill malfunctioned.

Usability: 3/5
Usability concerns details that may not matter to many people, particularly those that are only staying for a night or two. However, since design and usability are of interest to me, I like to include it anyway. Some hotels maximize space with very intelligent room design while others pay no attention to usability and guest convenience. In this case I found the hotel average for it's class. This hotel was good in terms of basics like ample storage space and power points but it also had flaws. No TV in the bedroom and reading light is not great. In some of rooms the air-cons blow directly on the bed which I found quite uncomfortable. However the beds were light enough we could move it farther away from the aircon.

Value for Money 4/5 at discounted rates:
This is always subjective depending on what is important to most people. Convenience to Robinsons, large space, and a pool are the difference makers for this hotel. People emphasizing style, modernity, and quiet will not find value here.

I stayed here for 2 nights in Feb 2016. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this suites. The 1 bedroom was very big with a kitchen, living and dinning area and a big bedroom. the bathroom was big enough with a tub.

The thing that amazed me most was the cleanliness and size of the suite for the price, 2700php a night with breakfast. i almost did not want to write a review of this place and keep it a secret so others won't messy the place up.

this place is easily located just off Gil Puyat very close to Robinson's. I give the Tropicana 5 stars, in my opinion, it is worth it. I will definitely return to this Hotel.

Excellent service by the front door staff also.

Yes they do, but it's advisable that you write to them in advance and tell them your estimated arrival time. They're most obliging.
Answer from Wally-Singapore
Singapore, Singapore844 contributions127 helpful votes
Typical taxi fare is around 280 - 320 peso. But you have to take a metered taxi (the yellow ones) Just outside arrival. But it would be better to get a Grab. This way you already know how much you're going to pay, instead of some unscrupulous driver taking your on the 'scenic' route. Recent Grab taxi fare was 280 peso, depends on the time of day and traffic conditions.

It is best to advise the Hotel the night before. It is cheaper to have the hotel staff find a taxi from the street and record the taxi information prior to leaving the hotel.
