Disregard my James Bond-ish review title. But, don't disregard staying at Pink Manila Hostel. I've been here a couple of times and instantly hanged out with some of the guests including its very friendly owner Crissy and all-around virtuoso slash tattoo artist staff Valerie.

The pool may be the ultimate feature of the hostel, but other than that - the environment like the common areas makes it possible for other guests to mingle with each other. It is like crashing to a friend's place. Lots of activities here like movie night, Thursday's move it forward, Reggae Night, tattoo sessions and soon a PTB night out.

The entry to this place is dodgy and the place is quite grimy overall but it’s fine for a couple of nights if you’re used to backpacking - helpful staff, easy to meet people and a bar for food and drinks.

Love the place, love the people who work in this hostel. Good place to stay. Very friendly. Fun to be with. I never had a single problem staying at the hostel. Feels like home. Thank you Pink Manila Hostel for a very warm welcome.

We stayed in the twin private room with ensuite, and we were NOT impressed!!

We paid for an air conditioned room considering the heat of Manila, but our air con didn't work. Neither did our shower. So we were stuck in a boiling room without the option to wash or cool down.

As for the linen, all that was given was a tiny single sheet laid over the bare mattress, which rendered it useless.

Our room also had an extensive amount of mould, as when showers/water was running on the floor above, it would all trickle down from the ceiling to our closet area, leaving our floor and walls extremely wet and the smell of the mould was absolutely horrific.

Still cannot believe we survived the Pink Manila Hostel and didn't wind up sick.

We picked this place due to the reviews on TripAdvisor as well as wanting to meet some fellow travellers before we start the bulk of our Philippines trip to get some ideas on our itinerary.

It was disappointing from the outset.

I knew it would be difficult to find after having read a number of reviews, and prepared myself for that. However, the woman at the reception desk (who wasn’t actually the receptionist…) was disinterested and unwelcoming. The actual receptionist, when she arrived, was lovely enough, but informed us that there was no air conditioning in the hostel as was previously advertised.

The common area was more run down than the website images suggest. There are no card facilities, despite taking card payments online. There was very little hot water in the shower, even when we abided by their “5-minute shower” regulation (only enough for one-half of a shower). Our bathroom door wouldn’t close. The wardrobe leaked with some miscellaneous unknown substance and saturated all our belongings. There are roosters everywhere who start crowing at around 4am, which wouldn't have been a problem if we could close the window with air con. They didn’t have a map of the area or anything with the hostel address written on it - make sure you print both these off at home before you arrive! As we were leaving, we turned off the ceiling and pedestal fan… when the electrical wiring came loose from the ceiling and entwined itself in the blades of the ceiling fan! Fortunately, because we were on our way out, we caught it before anyone was injured.

But I refuse to come out of a review without anything positive to say, so here are mine: The beds and pillows were surprisingly comfortable and the towels (which you have to rent) smelled AMAZING!!! Unfortunately these are the only things that contribute to the one-star rating I’m giving it, otherwise it would have been lower if possible.

My friends and I arrived here expecting this hostel to look like the photos and we saw nothing of the sort. It is a run down, ugly hostel in a dirty neighborhood. The staff was friendly enough but not really helpful. We tried to order a pizza after traveling all day and there phone didn't work. The sheets were clean on our beds but that was the only thing clean. The shower was questionable and there was no toilet paper. The pool appeared clean but it is very small. Breakfast was included which was a toaster with peanut butter or jelly and coffee. The best part of this hostel is the price but you couldn't pay me to stay here again.

What I would do to improve and make the Pink Manila Hostel a 5 star hostel:
1. Buy modern plastic furniture that you can hose down to clean it and nice cushions to put on it that you can just throw in a washing machine when they get dirty. The current furniture is super old, dirty and uncomfortable. The common area also needs more furniture.
2. Buy a giant automatic washer and dryer where you can comfortably wash everything that needs washing: rags, rugs, bed sheets, cushios, etc.
3. Buy strong long lasting bed frames. The current ones are fragile. Some are bent, and I was afraid the person on the top bunk bed would fall on top of me.
4. Put a big long transparent plastic to cover one side of the common area by the pool. The winds are so strong that your stuff on the table gets blown away. If the winds are strong hang it on.
5. Buy new mattresses. I woke up with a bunch of I don't know what it was bug bites in my arms, hands, and shoulders. Spiders maybe?
6. Educate hostel staff. They didn't know where the mall of Asia was in Manila. They were not helpful in giving directions either.
7. Facilitate taxi arrangements for the visitors that need a ride to the airport. Good hostels have shuttles. I was told it wasn't hard to find a taxi in the area and I did find it myself.
8. Do not over represent the hostel in the website. The website lists different activities for each day of the week, such as karaoke on Friday. When I asked, I was told by staff that not really, that around 11pm some patrons were likely to meet by the entrance to go watch midget boxing. I would've liked to go but didn't know who was going and while friendliness is common in hostels, without a hostel staff that knows the area I didn't dare to do it. In addition, the hostel is not really walking distance from anything nice. It's in ghetto like location. Oh, you can walk but not just a couple of blocks, maybe ten? That's not close.
9. Have what you list on the menu. What I wanted was out of stock.
10. Hire more staff to do the cleaning. It is an enormous place for a small crew.

I went here to hangout with some friends. It was hard to find. I already took a taxi to get here, still I had to ask around where it was. Also when you need a taxi going to places, you have to at least walk on the main street to find one. This is not an area to easily find a taxi, maybe during rush hour. They should have at least a sign "This way to Pink Manila Hostel" or any landmarks. It is in a run-down building which you wouldn't really think it was a place for accommodation. You have to enter a gate and there is a gym which seemed like a parking area before - the equipment looked rusty and not well-kept.

It's nice to read good reviews about this hostel. Maybe when it was still new but when I went here, it looked like a ghetto place. What happened? The pool was really dirty. No one dared to swim. Everything looked disorganized and neglected. It's not a welcoming place except there are nice people to meet. Don't be deceived by the professional photos they advertise online. It's not what you can expect when you get there. It says in their website: "Nearby restaurants, bars and pubs, grocery shopping, pharmacy, and other conveniences" - NOT REALLY but yes as long as you walk all the way to where the universities are (College of Saint Benilde, Lasalle University and Saint Scholastica College). That's about 10-15 minute walk. For the first timers in that Manila area - it can be confusing. You need to print a map so you wont get lost.

Sorry I feel bad about this review but it would be unfair not to say these observations when what you see online is a false advertisement. They should keep up what's advertise online. Read the latest reviews about this hostel, they are mostly true.

Super friendly staff and its ears to get around from there taking to metro or pretty much any other means of transportation.
The dorms and bathroom leave room for improvement but there's no buggs or anything.
You'll probably be surprised when you arrive. The first floor is a makeshift gym.
The WiFi is good

Sure it's not a 5-star accommodation, but for a hostel it's great value.

The "chill lounge" or common area's spacious. Lots of sitting space, and is by the pool/balcony which makes it breezy. The pool ain't so big, but at least there's a pool!

There's a billiards table, and DVDs to borrow in case you need to kill time before a flight. WiFi's pretty good.

I stayed in the 8-bed dorm ($13 a bed) and shared it with one long-staying guest. No issues with cleanliness since I reckon, it's got to do with who you bunk with as well.

Every night there's some kind of activity you could participate in (reggae party, pub crawl, etc.)

Brekkie's toast and coffee. Bigger meal can be ordered for $2.50

Staff is friendly and will go out of their way to help you. Reception's open 24-hours.

Location may be an issue as it is not in the usual backpacker area (it's in a university neighborhood), it could be difficult to get to but there are tips here on how to find the place: http://www.pinaytraveljunkie.com/2013/07/pink-manila-hostel-review-hostel-of.html

The area is safe even though some surrounding streets are not well lit. It also doesn't have a sleazy feel.
