Pros:
Nice hotel, friendly staff. Big clean room with very comfy bed and pillows. Very nice bathroom, too. There is a fridge, kettle, free bottled water everyday and cable TV in the room, too. Room serviced breakfast in the morning is a very nice touch as well. Wifi is fast and we had no issues with it.
Cons:
Location! It was pretty easy for the taxi drivers to locate it (next to Isetann mall) but the traffic to get there is horrendous! No matter what time it is, there always seems to be a traffic jam on the way to the hotel. I found the hotel super noisy - we had a room with a window (a smoking room) but the noise from the traffic and the construction around was noisy 24/7. It was noisy in the hotel corridors as well, I could hear people running and talking around midnight and 3-4am every night i was there. I found the aircond super loud no matter how low the fan is. My fiancé and I forgot to bring an adapter and wanted to borrow one from reception but they were going to charge us money for it! I have stayed elsewhere in Manila and this was the first time someone was going to charge us money. During my stay I injured my foot while sightseeing and wanted some ice to help reduce the swelling on my foot but reception told my fiancé that he would have to pay 50php for a bowl of ice! My fiancé ended up buying a kilo of ice for the same amount from the mall next-door instead. It would have been nice if the hotel would have given me some ice while i was injured.

Given the price -- (it came up to a total of Php1600 and some change) it was ok-- bed was thick, pillows and comforters were, uhmm, comfy... I just checked in for a solo good night's sleep so my requirements were basic.... sound proofing was ok though you can still (slightly) hear (from my 5th floor room) people singing videoke from the alley street below-- this can be easily drowned out by your TV.... room was clean. water pressure good....

There's an issue regarding which I already gave Expedia (BTW: I chose Expedia because on the day I made my booking Expedia was slightly less expensive v. Booking.com) a heads up yesterday but there hasn't been feedback from them yet.... you see (as of today), when you click room description on the Expedia site for a deluxe room for this hotel (I took a screencap of and included the shot in my review), among others it states that with regard to the bathroom (quoting verbatim with emphasis): Private bathroom, separate BATHTUB and shower, slippers, and free toiletries -- there is no separate bathtub-- I only had a shower stall-- so -- atleast for Room 521 which I stayed in, one of the stated amenities was not provided. I will say, though, in fairness to the staff, that I did not raise the issue of the invisible bathtub at the time of my stay.... I only noticed the missing bathtub (LOL) when I got home and went online again.... I hope the necessary clarification, correction or deletion will be made soon so as not to mislead prospective guests...

Also, the slippers are rubber type not disposable ones nor are they brand new.....-- they did the job unless you're sensitive that way....

There is no in-house cafe or resto-- they only have room service which, I think, is not available 24/7-- would be good to have one/or a convenience store....

Aside from having a conference room there's not much to do in the hotel-- no massage service or spa, deck or whatever.... since we're talking quezon boulevard-quiapo... it's not safe to venture out at night so better stock up on your drinks and snacks (walking distance: there's Isetann Department Store to the left, sidewalk mini-stores near the front and a 7-11 nearby) before retiring after dark. -- or maybe you can call for delivery....

Window View: sidestreet alley and the rooftop of an old building.... when I woke up and opened the curtain a guy was sleeping topless on a hammock on the top of the next building... so be careful when opening curtains.... hehehe

There's supposed to be free wi-fi but it didn't seem to work.... again, in fairness to the staff, I did not raise this issue with them....

In closing: if all you need are in-room activities for... whatever.... Sun Star, as it is relatively new, is okay.

Me and my relatives stay in this hotel during the 2016 bar exam, we stayed in this hotel so we can be close to UST to support my cousin who will be taking her exam. The place is located in the busy street of Quiapo just walking distance to Quiapo Church. The rooms are nice and it is new.My Aunt booked 2 rooms ,standard room with 1 bed and deluxe room with 2 beds. The rooms have mini fridge and a flatscreen TV if you wat to ask for extra beddings they can provide you. The bigger room that my Aunt booked is really spacious and it is a smoking room so good news for smokers. The hotel also provide wifi and I can say that they have good wifi connection. The stay in this hotel is pleasant plus you are going to have free breakfast and you can choice if you want american breakfast, english breakfast or filipino breakfast.Parking may also be an issue with this hotel but they have a paid parking just beside the hotel. The only concern that I have with this hotel is that one of the room that my aunt occupied is somehow creepy because I woke up at about 3 am and I heard someone poring water in a glass I thought that I am the only one who noticed it but my aunt as well. The staff also confirm that some guest also experienced creepy things in that room. Though their might be a ghost in one of their room we enjoy our quick staycation at the hotel.

this hotel opened November 2015 and we were one of the first guests. We continued to use the hotel and in fact reckon we were the number one guest at this hotel. Initially we gave them a chance to improve as clearly the staff were all inexperienced working in hotels with no real supervision. The supervision ( two males) were not on show. when seen shabbily dressed with no uniform, in fact you would not imagine them in any supervisory position
There are NO restuarants, NO coffee shop, NO lounge in fact NO facilities for GUESTS to use.
The food is served to your room from a menu where there is only 20% of the food menu available. When they serve you coffee you get the 3 in 1 instant with cup but no saucer or spoon ? The waiter is sometimes the cook himself. The rooms are cleaned everyday but not very well done..

The hotel is not busy and now have reverted to openly advertising on the outside streets for guests at 125 pesos an hour max 2 hours or 650 pesos for 12 hours and never advertising a daily rate. It is now a hotel for short time fun.
I really dont know what the investors are thinking but like the rest it will close down.
At night it is not safe to leave the hotel due to criminal activities on the street.
The hotel really needs one strong and experience manager get rid of the so called supervisors and put this hotel right and save the business
The old saying is pay peanuts and get monkeys relates to this hotel. Not to be recommended unless you want some short time fun ???

Response from Rayan T, Hotel Consultant at ZEN Rooms Sun Star Manila
Responded 6 Oct 2016
Dear Mr. Innes: Thank you very much for your candid review of your recent stay at our hotel. Your feedback is extremely valuable to us, as we strive to improve with each and every stay. To address your concerns: 1. As part of the hotel’s hiring procedure, we require that applicants are experienced in the hospitality industry. We are sorry of you find them inexperienced. 2. Before we assign staff in their respective post, they are all issued with complete uniform. You may be referring to weekends when our Duty Officers are not wearing Corporate Attire instead a smart casual uniform issued by the Management. 3. In the earlier part of the Hotel operations, we only cater to guest with Bed and Breakfast Accommodations. Due to guest requirements, other facilities are in the works already. 4. We don’t see anything wrong if during High Occupancy, our Chef helps deliver food to guestrooms to get things done. 5. The experiences you described are not the characteristic of the level of service our staff, supervisors strives to provide. Just the same your feedback was shared to the entire team. 6. The safety and security of our guests is always our top priority. We have coordinations with the nearest police stations in the area for assistance and police visibility during the night and we have 24-hour security and staff in anticipation of guest needs. 7. The demand for “short time” stay is innumberable especially to those who want to spend few more hours to rest after a shopping spree in Divisoria and Quiapo area. The hotel management has provided policies for such. 8. We are always willing to find perfect room which would meet every single guest requirements. Regarding the “no window”, indeed there are some rooms with such but this is also applicable to guest who prefers this. It was discussed upon check-in regarding room description. This was not intentionally created to protect “criminals” as you claim it to be. We also took note of your room service concerns and we will do our best to add more choices for American and European breakfast though upon checking your frequent orders only were crab and corn soup and onion rings which we were able to provide. We also understand how irate you are since we do not allow high balances on guest bills as a matter of Hotel policy. Since you are a returning guest, the management has been very lenient whenever you fail to settle at a designated date and time extended to you. We are very sorry that we do not accept personal checks as we only allow this with our accredited partners who applied for it and not for individuals only for hotels security also. We wish to point out that our team has done everything possible to serve you during your stay and we are grateful and took every criticism seriously. We truly apologized and we will do our best to improve steadily. Sincerely, Sun Star Grand Hotel Management

Security in hotel warns you about pickpockets, the area is dirty, have bad vibrations, and I don't feel safe at night. My slippers brought from Bangkok became black from the dirty floor after one night, the food from room service was so-so, but the staff did their best. Most helpful reception saved my spirit!

After arriving at 11pm at the Sun Star after arriving in Manila, we were greeted and taken to our prebooked room. Immediately on entering the room stank of smoke and there was not even a window to open.

Carried out stuff all the way back down to reception and were given another room. When we went up to this room the key was not working properly and there was no electricity. Upon arriving back at reception a third time to tell them we received a frosty response and they said they would come and show us that the key was fine. They quickly found out the key wasn't fine and offered no apology.

Our final room luckily had electricity despite a faulty AC unit so we decided to settle as it was gone 1am by this point.

My friends and I went there and stayed at the Sun Star Suite. This is a perfect example of 'don't judge a book by it's cover'. The location may be a bit off but it's a totally different story once you come in. They have a posh lobby, comfortable beds, super delicious foods and the best KTV! We were really surprised that there's a place like that in Quiapo.

We stayed here for 3 nights. The downside: there were no non-smoking rooms with windows. This made us feel a little claustrophobic.
However, the room was well maintained, it was functionally furnished and had a good bathroom/shower.
The hotel amenities are limited to the reception area; breakfast is served in the room as there is no common dining hall.
The staff was helpful. The surroundings offer many places for casual dining and there is the Isetann shopping center closeby and FEU Manila campus is a stone's throw away.
For the price, this is a good choice.

Great location. Close to two LRT stations: Recto (line 2) and Doroteo Jose (line 1) and also close to a shopping mall.
The building is new, just like the furnitures. The (deluxe) room is really spacious and clean but mine had no windows.
Included in the room I also had a kettle (with free instant coffee and tea) but no refrigerator.
The food and its prices are ok. Services and staff are really good.
Negative thing: the laundry service is really really expensive and around the hotel I couldn't find a laundry. Except this, nothing to complain about.
The quality/price ratio is really good.

You can’t fault the hotel much because it’s very modern, clean and comfortable, staff are lovely and the food is great... but the location is awful. It must be the best hotel in this part of the city because we couldn’t find anywhere else like it! The surrounding area just feels very grubby and chaotic, which was a real shame. There’s no nearby restaurants, and although there was a shopping mall/area nearby, the shops are old and worn. I didn’t feel safe walking round here at night. If the hotel was situated in a better area I’d give it a 5 star rating.
