One of the reasons for choosing to stay in a ryokan, in my mind at least, is the sense of hospitality you get - the made you're made to feel welcomed and taken care of during your stay.

At Hagiya, by comparison, it felt pretty much like everyone was going through the motions at best.

It started with being shown to our room by someone who seemed generally annoyed with her job, and who would much rather we weren't there to disturb her. The rest of the staff were better, but - either as a lingering result of this first impression - or because of the service itself - generally did not give the impression that they were particularly guest- or service-oriented. More like they were going through the motions, and ensuring the minimum acceptable level of service was delivered.

Food was fine - again nothing special or that made us think "wow", but all done quite competently.

Baths are nice, and the room was good.
