I loved this place. Ilha Grande is an absolute paradise, but the downtown area is extremely touristy and getting taken over by big-name corporations. This hostel is owned by locals and is just outside the main downtown area, so it's nice and quiet, but close enough to go downtown for dinner. The staff are extremely nice, and very handy with...

There were rats on the roof. As my room was upstairs I could hear them walking and making noises. I wanted to change the room but the hostel was full. After discussing with the manager he gave me a very small discount. I can not recommend this hostel. Only the reception was very nice and helped me. Also the breakfast...

Very basic, one of the cheaper places on the island, a bit dirty, very hot at night in the rooms, staff don't speak English but are friendly and try via translator app, our room (budget 2 person suite) was incredibly small and made two people in one room challenging

I´ve enjoyed my entire stay at Mata Virgem and i highly recommend this place to all friends around the globe. Breakfast is excellent with fresh fruits and breads. I shared a room with a friend of mine along with three very nice Argentine girls and then with two amazing girls from Uruguay. Those young people full of energy added a...

We booked last minute in high season and this was one of the only places with beds available, when we got there I realised why. The hostel has a strong damp smell which gets stronger as you climb the 3 flights of stairs to the 4 bed dorm we were staying in. The rooms and bathrooms ( and entire hostel)...

Stayed here for 4 nights. The room and bathroom was really clean. Lockers should be cleaned out better tho' after each visitor, because it was food in there and lots of little flies everywhere.. Cute and cozy hostel, OK standard. It can be hard for backpackers to get up there because there are lousy stairs and far up. The entrance...

I've not stayed at this hostel but tried to. In november 2011 we booked through hostelworld.com 3 nights during carnival week, february 2012 and got an e-mail with the confirmation. In january, 2 months later and 1 month before our trip, they sent us an e-mail stating that during carnival they accept only 5 days package!! I mean... the website...

Stayed here with friends for 3 nights in january 2011. The hostel is a bit away from the "city centre", if you are carrying a suitcase you will be having trouble dragging it with you up the stairs and along the small trails. It is still nice enough, but it does not feel like a hostel - more like you...
