Wow, what a great hotel. Located near the lapa arches, this hotel is convenient to many famous locations. Minutes away from Copacabana beach, Sugarloaf mountain and many other attractions. There is plenty to do near here. Friday and Saturday nights expect the streets to be lined with people, music, vendors all partying until the crack of dawn. This hotel stays quiet unless you opt to open your window at night. Free breakfast included, a vast variety of breads, fruits, and hot dishes, you surely won’t go out hungry. The beds were comfortable and bathroom clean, however you may need to request housekeeping and replacement towels. The front desk speaks some English but preferably use Português.

Based in the centre of Rio, this hotel has pleasant friendly staff. It also has slow lifts which seem to take forever to reach the ground floor. The room used had the tiniest bathroom ever whose sink was blocked with masses of hair which was pretty disgusting when trying to remedy the problem. Breakfast is between 0600 and 1000 but do not arrive in the last hour or there will be no plates or bowls or glasses left. When I asked a member of the breakfast staff for a plate after eventually finding a bowl, he simply picked up a clearly used, dirty plate and wiped his hand over it before giving it to me. The plate was not used by me from this point on. The breakfast offering overall was a mediocre buffet. Good fast wifi and speedy service when checking out.

The hotel is situated in Lapa, when you enter the area first it looks quite dilapidated and unsafe. There are lots of bars and restaurants in the vicinity but they are all very basic, so if you are looking for something better this one is not for you. The room was ok, basic and our room looked out on flats and their backyards. The staff is very helpful. The pool on the rooftop is small but a nice feature. Breakfast was good with lots of fresh fruit, joghurts, cereals, chees and a hot buffet. This hotel was included in our package deal, should we ever go back to Rio we would choose another hotel to stay.

Thanks for the great experience at Granada hotel. I really enjoyed myself and was touched by the special attention Bruno (front desk) gave to me. I had a LOT of questions and he patiently answered them and made some good recommendations. Also, this was one of my first times to Brazil and to Rio. I was quite nervous and he made me feel very safe and comfortable. His suggestions for restaurants, activities, and safety were particularly helpful. To my surprise he spoke perfect English without an accent! I don't normally speak about individuals in these reviews, but he really stood out and wanted me to have the best time possible. You are lucky to have him!

The rooms was good (bigger than I expected) and the bed was very comfortable. Very clean and the room smelled divine!

This hotel is a good choice, great value for the price. The staff is friendly. The hotel feel a little bit dated and a few things must have broken with time, The rooftop bar is no more. I think that hotels should be required to update their photos and amenity list every 5 years, just to make sure the customer know what they are getting.

I would stay here again, I know what to expect now. My room took very long to be ready but it was ok.

Because we were in Rio mainly to go to the Carnival, we were advised to stay in the Lapa District, due to the proximity to the Samba drome, walking distance approx. 1.5 km., thus avoiding the problems of getting taxis or buses in the early hours of the morning when leaving the Samba Drome. Although this advice is correct, in hindsight, I would rather have stayed near the beaches and battled for a taxi for the 1 night of Carnival, than stay in this area for the 4 days we spent in Rio. We felt very unsafe walking around this part of town, particularly at night, when there were thousands of drunk, revelling party-goers milling around outside the hotel, and in all the surrounding streets.
The Granada Hotel's web-site makes it appear much nicer than it is. The decor is very old and dated; the mattress was very thin and we were only provided with one rather flat pillow each. I requested extra pillows every day, but although they said OK, they never appeared!! There was no hair dryer in the room and when I asked for one, was told they did not have any - maybe next year!! The staff could hardly speak any English, although one of the receptionists did try very hard. We were led to believe that there was internet access in the lobby, but there is not!!
We did however, have a great view of Christ, the Redeemer statue on Corcovado Mountain from our large bedroom window, and the included breakfast buffet was quite good, although could have been hotter.
The hotel is very close to the Cathedral and the Lapa Arches and public transport is close by. The rates @ BR300.00 per night were excessive, being about 3 times the normal price, due to Carnival time.
In summary, I wouldn't recommend this hotel unless you speak Portuguese and need to be in that area.

Stayed for a couple of days.was a big mistake. Lots of prostitutes and drugs outside.almost no police presence, they were possibly scared. Internet hardly working, so the staff and the waiters....
Much too expensive for what it (not) offers. Very decrepit, seedy and shabby area. I thought it was closer to avenida rio brnco but no....only the lapa arches with notorious crime rates is close.
One of my worst hotels in brazil.
Would never ever return to this.....
A terrible choice ....a real rip off ! Not exaggerated...
Ahhh....the rooftop and the view were nice ...to be a bit positive lol

There is a lot to like about the Hotel Granada, despite its location in an allegedly unsafe neighbourhood. Firstly, the hotel staff was helpful, friendly and spoke English. Secondly, our spacious superior room featured a separate lounge area, which allowed plenty of space to relax in. Thirdly, the luxurious bed was the most comfortable that I have ever slept in, anywhere.

Facing the iconic St Sebastian Cathedral, our accommodation on the 13th floor provided excellent views of the Cathedral´s nightly light display, and easy access to the roof top amenities. The air-conditioning was adequate, (we kept it on most of the time). The WIFI connection was somewhat intermittent. Renovated approximately three years ago, the room was in excellent condition and spotlessly clean. Thankfully, the bathroom was generously sized - a must for me when staying in hotels, as I get claustrophobic - however the positioning of the toilet adjacent to the shower cubicle made sitting on the toilet comfortably quite difficult.

The Hotel Granada is located near Lapa, known for its bustling nightlife - and for being unsafe. We ate at local restaurants by early evening and explored the neighbourhood by foot in the mornings. A police presence was evident at all times. Venturing further afield by public transport was easy, with a bus stop for Copacabana and Ipanema conveniently just down the road from the Hotel.

For a hotel that I would rate as 4 star, the breakfast selection was basic. Notably, the orange juice tasted all too obviously as reconstituted from concentrate.

I made reservations in a hurry, then was shocked by reviews on other sites. What a pleasent surprise once I arrived! The Hotel has been newly referbished and the new rooms are fantastic! I am accustom to "cold-only" showers so until they either install or repair the boiler it's cold showers. To me, the Granada is a great value at just over R$200.00 reais per night in the central of the "Wonderful City" you honestly cannot go wrong. Free parking was a super value but until they complete repairs in the lower parking area be prepared to find mud smeared inside you car upon return. Internet was not available during my stay but I really did not have time for it as ithis was just an overnighter. I will stay here again even with the negatives as the positives. The Staff were really helpful though English was not something they had a handle on.
Great surprise for sure!

First of all: forget the hotel's website, this is totally outdated, the photos do not match with reality. This site is being totally renovated, but the rooms are already renovated, the furniture are very new, the facilities in General were delivered. The frontdesk is not ready yet, nor the facade, someparts of the facility are a mess. But, If you are looking for a place close to the downtown, well located and a good night's sleep, the hotel Granada has the best cost-benefit among the business hotels of the city.

How far is hotel from cocabanna beach thanks
Answer from MLSpencer
Northampton, United Kingdom10 contributions6 helpful votes
Not near..so taxi is probably best option which is about 30 Brazilian Reais one way. Walking would be probably nearly 2 hours and public transport upto an hour although we didn't try this. We had a couple of coach excursions and asked to be dropped off at the beach and then came back by taxi. If you want to experience the night life of Lapas area I would recommend the hotel.

West Covina, CA10 contributions6 helpful votes
Honestly, I didn't rent a car, but I am sure you can due to the location. The hotel staff there is great, and it's in the downtown area. I am sure that it won't be difficult. The hotel is a great value, and is very centrally located. If you have a need, they will do all they can to help you out. They run a very good crew there. I hope this helps.
