Just checked out after 9 nights in the hotel on a Bed and Breakfast option. On arrival your greeted by a number of security guards and staff, assuming this is normal for Brazil, but very strange for UK visitors. Room was on the 13th floor, overlooking the sea, large room and very clean.

The hotel in general is spotless, it has staff everywhere milling about waiting to help or direct. If you dont speak the lingo then you have had it, hardly anyone speaks English.

Breakfast is ok, a good section of stuff for all. The staff are happy to help at the bars and to try and understand what you need.

The only thing I didn’t like is in the morning for breakfast all the welcome staff gather around the entrance to breakfast like a pack of dogs and jump on you to help or say hello, the first time it happened was ok but for another 8 days was a bit too much. (If I want you I’ll find you). Should be the policy……

The View restaurant on the top of the hotel (floor 30) is awesome. I recommend the tomahawk streak………wow

The beach is literally over the road and it’s lovely, never felt any anxiety or concern over safety.

If I was coming back to Brazil I would stay here again. But can’t see me returning as there are much better places to visit in the world and it’s a long way from the UK.

Anyway overall it’s good.

Beautiful hotel with professional staff. Manoela at the Front Desk is a real 5 star employee! She really did go the extra mile to make our stay unforgettable. The view from the room is amazing. You can see the ocean and Pedra de Gávea. Complimentary breakfast is nice as well. The room had Nespresso coffee machine and UHD TV.
Hotel is right in front of the beach and it offers complimentary beach chairs and umbrellas. Sao Conrado beach is safe and less crowded compared to Ipanema or Copacabana. Looking forward staying here in the future again.

I recently stayed at the Hotel Nacional in Rio De Janeiro and overall had a positive experience. The hotel boasts a fantastic location with easy access to the beach, making it a great choice for those looking to enjoy the coastal attractions. The entertainment options at the hotel were a highlight, with a varied mix of DJs, artists, and singers providing enjoyable experiences both inside in the evenings and poolside. The spacious rooms lived up to their famous design and added to the overall appeal of the stunning building.

However, there were some downsides to my stay. The elevator system did not function well during busy periods, leading to frustratingly long wait times, particularly on weekends. While the majority of the staff were friendly and accommodating, I encountered an unpleasant experience with a rude barman named ‘Wanderson’, which dampened an otherwise positive impression. Very poor customer service from him!

Breakfast lacks quality fresh fruit.

In addition, one night we returned to find out the bed had been made but without the correct bed sheet. Meaning feet were touching the mattress. Very odd! Night concierge was embarrassed at having to sort this at 1am.

In summary, the Hotel Nacional offers a great location and fantastic entertainment options, but the issues with the elevator system and the behavior of a staff member detracted from an otherwise enjoyable stay.

I often looked at this then closed hotel when staying at the now former InterContinental next door.

I was excited when this hotel reopened last year under the Melia brand but couldn't make it before they had already dropped their affiliation (and I can see why).

The hotel is not fully operational based on a walk on the 30th floor. Hopefully they finish before closing the hotel again.

I booked a superior suite that was ok. Only one trashbin for the entire space?

The AC was really weird. It is like they have a standalone unit for each room and not a central one.

The hotel phones in the suite were cheapest possible crap.

The internet didn't work most of the time and had to tether on the cellphone network to get work done. I guess that the hotel is still in the 1990's.

The view of the beach was nice, however.

The front desk is an utter mess and took half an hour to check in.

The breakfast restaurant is like a nursery. They should put some acustic panels on the wall.

The location next to the biggest favela in Rio likely worries some.

Firstly the only 5 * thing of this hotel is the price of food and drink.

Plus points the pool, gym and breakfast are ok. Thais who works nights on reception is the only other plus factor she is really helpful. The manager needs to open his eyes maybe try a trip to the Far East to see how a hotel should be run would help.

No water on arrival or daily in your room no coffee facilities in the room. Air conditioning is louder than a jumbo jet therefore has to be off at night.

Sun loungers are shabby and metal due to the one towel policy you get burnt sitting on them as one towel is inadequate to cover the lounger therefore on hot days they become a hazard.

The rooms themselves is a lottery you may be lucky and get a decent room I had to change rooms mainly because of the no hot water shower. Not to mention lack of sound proofing allowing the antics of the more amorous to be readily available.

Complete lack of English with the majority of staff for what portrays to be an International 5 * hotel sadly not.

Overall as a world traveller I would say this hotel is grossly overrated however I am finding to my cost in general hotels in Brazil are not of good standard.

Would I return not a chance.

As many have pointed out, the hotel is an icon of Brazilian architecture. And it has a lot going on for it. The beachfront location, the generous outdoor areas are just to name a few of its positive points.

Like all properties the hotel also has a few problems, especially in terms of upkeeping, but nothing to disqualify it.

I would easily give it a four star rating, BUT. There´s music blaring out in the pool area all day long. One cannot even hear the relaxing sound of the waves crashing on the beach just across the street. It is lamentable.

If you want a relaxing time at this, otherwise iconic property with a gigantic upscale potential, forget it. If you stay at the pool, loud, blaring out music is all you are going to get.

No music at all, or soothing background music bothers no one. But blaring out upbeat music of dubious quality has the potential to be a nuisance many discerning guests.

Again LAMENTABLE.

I chose this hotel after staying 2 nights in Copacabana. I am so glad I made the change as the beach is crowded and impossible to relax. The hotel nacional was so nice, peaceful, and the beach is amazing. The staff at the front desk all spoke English, the security at the building taught me some Portuguese and were very kind to my kids giving high fives. The pool was incredible with a smaller toddler height level and it was so nice and warm. The children’s play area was great and they have so many activities for kids. The very short walk across the street was a breeze with the kids compared to Copacabana and the views from the room were incredible.

The architecture gets 5 stars. Views spectacular. Facilities very good (pool, mainly). . But this is not a 5-star hotel. The breakfast and quality of the service, and general finishing, is more like a 3-star hotel. For example, the breakfast is not very carefully cooked, just a standard buffet you get in any conference hotel. The machines in the gym are broken. Our house keeping was sort of shoddy ( she cleaned the sink with the same cloth as the toilet), items in the room broken. It could be an incredible hotel, but the people running it are doing it on a budget.

One of the best 5 stars in the whole world. The hotel projected by the architect Oscar Niemeyer is more than a hotel is a piece of art, a masterpiece at front of the São Conrado blue sea, white sand beach. A great reception and room services staff. Superb breakfast and unique drinks.
The Hotel National is a real 5 stars hotel in all services for all people: singles, families, couples. They have a wonderful space to children to play with monitors speaking english and spanish.
