I had great stay in this hotel, used to be a mansion belonged to a female writer. Very characterized, right in the middle of the colourful suburb Santa Teresa, which is my favorite surburn in Rio. Friendly and helpful staff, characterised rooms, lovely breakfast, will definitely go back one day.

Stayed here during World Cup> Paid 4 star hotel prices for a basic B&B standard accommodation. The establishment is mid way up the hill between Lapa and St Theresa. Unfortunately the road has been dug up and is closed to traffic for large parts of the day. At other times taxis refuse to go there. This means having to walk...

I visited Rio de Janeiro in the summer 2013 and stayed 5 nights at Casa MangoMango. The staff was really helpful in explaining the do's and dont's and also giving great advice on directions and which sightseeings to visit. The B&B is greatly located very close to many bars. The room was very standard but considering the price there is...

I was disappointed reading the comments below. We stayed for three nights and had an awesome time. Offcourse you can't expect a luxury accomodation in the most fancy neighbourhood if you only pay 40 euros a night. But we had a great room, which was clean. The breakfast was nice and the staff were really friendly. They helped us out...

I booked a room at this hotel, however, my plans changed so I had to cancel. Despite having a 100% refund policy, the property HAS NOT refunded my my deposit. I have been waiting for aover 2 months, have had various email contacts with them stating that they are trying to give me my deposit back, but still nothing. I...

The place is located in an old villa on the outskirts of central Rio de Janeiro, located in a quiet residential neighbourhood. It can be quite difficult to find, so try and get good directions in advance. The rooms vary greatly in quality and size, so before booking, check out each option in detail. Staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast...

We were quite disappointed because the road that leads to the hostel is closed for construction (and had been closed for at least half a year). This means that whenever you catch a taxi you have to walk the last 10-15 minutes. Being in Rio and Santa Teresa where crime rate is allegedly high, (see review on 22 Feb 2014...

First off , no taxis would drop us off to Casa Mango Mango, I should have cancelled then, but we had a taxi drop us off as close as they would and walked a good quarter of a mile with our suitcases through a pretty unsafe area uphill instead. When I finally got there, I was told that they had...

We spent two nights there last April. Nice location in Santa Teresa (said to be a bit dangerous but we didn't have any problems, even walking at night, besides, they can always arrange a taxi for you), close to Lapa. We had some problems with a reservation - from booking.com, with children staying for free, they said it was impossible...

We lived in room 6 (1 night) and 5 (3 Nights) The rooms are really nice and cool. It's like to be home. Hot water, but no aircon, just a big fan. Not that great if the weather is around 35 C. Breakfast: come early, the kitchen lady is really slow to fill up the buffet. Otherwise the breakfast is...

Staying in Santa Teresa

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is a bohemian enclave hosting many local artists’ studios. The narrow, winding streets of this neighbourhood were revitalised years ago, and visitors can now stroll through this area to view magnificent mansions dating back to the late 19th and early 20th century. A highlight not miss: Museu Chacará do Céu, a former mansion turned museum which houses works by prominent Brazilian modern artists.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Casa MangoMango is one of the few places to stay in Rio where you can relax in a magnificent colonial, tropical setting and yet be right next to the best nightlife and activities this marvelous city offers. Set in a quaint cobbled street in the old part of the city, Santa Teresa, Casa MangoMango offers easy access both to beaches, forest and city. The house is on the the hundred-year old tram route, only ten minutes from the city centre. The house itself is a huge colonial mansion, guarded by two magnificent bi-centenarian mango trees. Hence the name, Casa MangoMango! Resplendent with original features, the house has been restored and decorated in funky, upbeat designs to cater for every taste. And outside, in the lovely, tropical gardens, there’s a cool pool too! Built by Julia Lopes, a Brazilian novelist, journalist, playwright, and lecturer, the house hosted many a sarau for the literati of the early 20th century. Today we try to keep her spirit alive by inviting local artists to display their work and employing local musicians on our multi-lingual staff. Our musical and artistic events may well be some of your best holiday memories in Brazil. ... more   less

“pay a little extra is worth it in this hostel, you will get a much better room. If you want to change money, do it at the airport if you can, you will have to take a cab to go downtown to do so if you didn't do it before arriving at the Hostel. We found the best food around Ipanema and downtown, the restaurants around the hostel were not so great and a lot of them are only open for lunch.”
