We were looking for a guaranteed sun destination to celebrate my husband's 30th birthday. Brazil certainly fits the bill with a constant temperature all year round. The Visual is the best looking hotel in the resort of Ponta Negra. It has three really well presented swimming pools, one with swim-up bar for those delicious cocktails (really got a taste for caipirinha!). The hotel is exceptionally clean and well kept and felt more like a 4 than 3 star. Breakfast at the Visual runs from 6am to 10am and is well stocked with a good choice at all times.
Our room was spacious with a stunning view of the sand dune. Aircon is standard and the big walk-in shower was great after a hard day at the beach.

You will get people trying to sell you all kinds of stuff wherever you go in Ponta Negra but they are not as pushy as other places we've been and you can actually get some good bargains. You could easily just stay on a sun lounger by the pool overlooking the beach all day, but venture into town and there are some good restaurants - the seafood here is amazing and so cheap. I don't actually like prawns back home (so small and rubbery!) but here they are delicious.

Ponta Negra at night is buzzing, with live music in many of the bars. You will notice the presence of a lot of tourist police in the area. We did not feel threatened, but one night did see someone get hit over the head with a bottle - a lighthearted incident turned bad - so I guess the police are there for a reason. I did hear of one British couple who had their bag stolen on the beach by a kid, and when they gave chase they got bricks thrown at them! At first you think these kids are cute but do watch your things. Don't let this put you off - just remember most Brazilians are poor, the better off earning about £300 a month. Everyone we met was friendly and generally there is a real laid back atmosphere in resort.

There are a lot of 5* hotels going up along the Via Costeira, along from Ponta Negra, but if you prefer to be within walking distance of everything the Visual is hard to beat. If you walk up the hill to the main road there are some 'posher' restaurants, still v cheap. Head to the first one on the other side of the road and you may be lucky enough to get the Brazilian waiter who has cycled from Land's End to John O'Groats! Camaroes is a popular seafood chain here and there are two - a smaller one and if you carry on walking a much larger one on the other side. This seems to be where the locals go for their big celebrations, portions are enormous.

We travelled with Thomson and their rep Angelo is superb. He covers all the hotels in the area and really knows his stuff. He is a keen surfer so if that is the purpose of your visit I am sure he can give you some tips. If you only do one trip it has to be the beach buggy safari, really good fun and after a while in the desert you get to cool off at a lagoon.

Independantly we booked another buggy trip to Pipa. Beware of this one that promises you can 'swim with dolphins'. Yes there are dolphins in Dolphin Bay and we did see them but they are a long way out and you are taken nowhere near the beach - you just get to view them from the clifftop. Swimming with the dolphins is discouraged.

There are some lovely beaches around Pipa and Pipa town itself has a great vibe. We only stopped for a short while (we had to catch the last boat back before the tide came in) but you can do the longer trip by road on the local bus. If you go for two weeks it would be a good idea to stay in Pipa for a night - a maze of streets with cool bars and a kind of surfer/hippie/arty atmosphere.

All in all just a fantastic holiday. You can be as relaxed or active as you like here. Amazing people, colourful surroundings, music in the air all the time and you can eat like a king for very little - what more do you want?!

(p.s. don't let any online weather forecasts of 'rain' put you off - we had one shower and by the time the restaurant we were in pulled down the awnings, they had to pull them back up again!)

We have just returned from our much enjoyed holiday at the Visual Praia
The Hotel has a very deserved 3 star + rating. Rooms are clean, well proportioned and in good decorative order and have a safety deposit box and air conditioning. Linen and towels are changed daily and hot water is always available.
Staff are pleasant, eager to please and will assist in anyway possible
Breakfasts are buffet style, with a good choice of well presented food including fresh fruit, cereal, cold meats & cheeses and limited selection of hot dishes.
Location of hotel is directly on the beach and the hotel has an adequate number of sunloungers / parasols reserved free of charge for residents use. Sea temperature when we were there was a constant 26 / 27 degrees
3 swimming pools and sun terraces all cleaned daily with plenty of sunloungers and shade
Location to nearesr bars / restaurants is a pleasant 5 minute stroll along the beach or paved prom.
Restaurant prices are cheap and food portions huge, with dinners ranging from £7 for 2 people to £20 for 2 (lobster), we paid about £17 for 6 half lobsters served on a plate of food so large, we could only eat about 75% of it
Lunches are generally cheaper with 1 restaurant offering eat as much as you like (16 different prawn dishes), chips, rice, salad for about £4.50p each. Beer is about 75p a bottle. Beach Food vendors are numerous and hygenic. A wide variety of food and drinks are available from these vendors, including meat or chicken kebabs 30p, Corn on the cob 60p, coconut milk 30p (even pina coladas at about £1 per plastic cupful)

Beach buggy trips either to the North or to the South are the most popular excursion and can be booked through the rep or as we did cheaper from any agency on the Ponta Negra sea front, cost all in for the buggy and english speaking driver was £70. Would recommend to all
All in all could not fault the weather, hotel, resort or the people. Minor complaints would be the limited english language knowledge at some bars / restaurants (though this is being rectified fast) and the number of beach vendors, though numerous are not persistant and are friendly even if you do not buy
We found Ponta Negra safe to wander day or night and did not speak with anyone who contradicted that view
Do not expect over commercialism, wait about 5 more years for that to arrive.

We booked 3 weeks with Thomsons at the Visual Praia in Jan/Feb this year, and were very impressed by this 3* hotel - it is more like 4* in my opinion. The staff are very helpful and speak excellent English. Great selection at breakfast, clean and spacious rooms with very nice bathrooms. I really can't fault the hotel apart from 1 thing - the way it is positioned at this time of the year you can't sunbathe round the pool after 3pm as the sun goes behind the hotel.

We felt very safe in Ponta Negra no trouble at all. Great weather the odd 5 minute shower but nothing to worry about.

We went to Pipa for 2 nights which was fabulous a very laid back and chilled resort - we did this independently picking up a bus outside Natal shopping centre (took approx 2 hours) and we stayed at Pousada Riva which was a lovely comfortable place to stay and very reasonable.

We also went to Rio again independently (4 nights cost approx £350 each inc flight with GOL) - absolutely brilliant place, saw a match at the Maracana which was an amazing experience.

Can't fault Brazil at all will definitely go back

The place is not clean, food was not good, front desk manager when we checked in was useless. Pool broken first day and dirty the rest of the stay. Air conditioning did not work in my first room and front desk manager gave me a difficult time about switching. Finally found me another room next to the kitchen.
Do not recommend staying here.

Just returned from a two week stay at the hotel visual, ponta negra, Natal. Booked the holiday thru' Thomson at a very competative rate for 2 weeks! The hotel is rated 3+*'s however is worth a 4* rating with attentative staff, comfortable bedrooms, pleasant garden and pool areas, close to the beach and within walking distance of the village of Ponta negra. The weather is a real bonus at 32 degrees every day and the sea at a constant 28 degrees. The people here are very pleasant, colourful and helpful, didn't feel unsafe or uncomfortable at any time here, which is reported to be the safest part of Brasil.
The beach traders are something to see and will spend their time showing you their wares, but if you don't want to buy they just say "no stress" and move on to the next! The prices are about a quarter of the price in the UK e.g. drinks and food. Priar shopping centre is the closest to the hotel and a free bus runs on the hour from 2pm until 22.00hrs. The best shopping centre in Mid Way about a £6 taxi ride or you can catch the local bus (which we did) FOR ABOUT 20P! The best buys are leather shoes and bags (very cheap). Can't wait to return next year.

Just returned fron the Visual after having spent 7 nights there.
Well what can I say? This hotel and resort is fantastic. The weather was in the 90's with a cool breeze which I'm told disappears from December onwards.
The hotel is more 4 star than 3 and offers 3 swimming pools one of which has a swim up bar. Tthe prices in the hotel are reasonable with a beer costing about £1.
The location is excellent, if you turn right out of the back of the hotel and walk for about 10 mins you reach bars and restaurants serving fresh seafood including lobster, shrimps and prawns.
Be sure to go to Bar street a 10 minute taxi ride. There you will find a busy street of restaurants and bars where you can dance and party the night away till the early hours.
Dont miss the beach buggy safari a truly great day out.
Brazil is under exposed and under commercialised, hope it stays that way.
Would we go back?? You bet we would
Enjoy and take a chance

We chose this hotel based on the reviews read on this website and it did not disappoint. The hotel is clean, friendly and in a good position. The breakfasts are good. The pool area gets a little cramped and it can be difficult to get a bed. The sun is finished by 3 - 3.30 but this is the same everywhere here, not just the hotel. You might get an extra half hour on the beach but not much more. Bear this in mind as you have quite a time to amuse yourself between then and dinner which some would not like. We were ripped off by the beach boys immediately outside the hotel so a lesson was learned. Ask how much for a bed and umbrella and how much is a beer or coke or whatever it is you drink so you don't get any shocks. Prices seem to vary. The beach is fun, a lot of life but no hassle. Boys come round selling small kebabs of prawns, chicken or haloumi cheese they are clean and so cheap, about 30 or 40p I think, a great snack. Also the Caiprinhas made with Cacacha are sold everywhere, varying in price (£1 on the beach) and perfection but great all the same. We didn't like the Caiprinias as we felt they had a slight whisky flavour but discovered the alternatives were fab - Caiproska made with Vodka or Caiprissimo the same but made with White Rum. The rooms are well kept but some of the rooms were inter-communicating at some point and your neighbours might just as well be in the same room as you. The same applies to the bathrooms, the walls are thin..The Rifoles also looked a good hotel but it is just a bit farther away. The restaurants in Ponta Negra probably have more atmosphere as some of them have music but we prefered the more upmarket ones on the Highway (still just as cheap), particularly Camaroes and Mezzano. As a result we found the nightlife lacking. This is a good holiday if you like to be lazy, so great if all you want to do is have a rest and good food at a cheap price. There isn't really much to do. The shops aren't as good as anything in England. Word of warning - the air - which is 2nd purest in the world apparently next to Alaska. As a result, we found ourselves constantly dozing and had some of the earliest nights we have ever had so only ever got to Bar Street once as this doesn't start till after 10pm. We have all heard the negative safety aspects of Brazil but we felt safe and walked everywhere. Would return if we were looking for a rest, good standards and good food at a good price.

My wife and I ( aged 30) recently stayed at the Visal and I have to say,it's very good.
The rooms are clean and spacious, the food is good and the location is excellent for the beach and a safe stroll from lots of restaruants.
Natal itself is very nice. If you want to go somewhere that isn't over ridden with tourism yet, then its great. Fanatastic weather for this time of year, very cheap and lots to do.
I would recommend the beach buggy trips, fun and intersting. Pipa is well worth a visit, very young and lively. We booked our hotels through www.pipa.com/br and then got a bus from Natal. Easy and safe and you see some fanatsic sights along the way. It is also much cheaper to do yourself, cost us less than £60 including a nights stay for 2 people in a nice hotel.
I would reccomend a footbal match too. Again, we tried our luck on our own and saw ABC, one of the local teams. Not first class football but good atmosphere and again much cheaper to organise yourself.
As far as money is concerned, I would take some Brazillian Real and Dollars. The hotel will change Dollars for you, however you can walk along the beach by the restaurants and change currency and travellers cheques there for a better rate. Be warned though, they guy behind the desk is so misearable!!
Food in Natal is about average. Every menu has shrimps on it which you will have enough of at some point. All dishes are more about quantity than quality but I have to say the steaks are excellent.
Overall, I would highly reccomend it. If you want somewhere different and a little bit interesting, where English people are'nt the most tourists then now is a good time to go. I am sure this will change soon though!

Just returned from a fortnight and would go again asap!
Hotel is great - right on the beach and couple of mins from everything. Apparently the Sarhs is a nicer hotel but much further out, the Visual is definately the best hotel in the beach area.
We got a dud room at first but were moved as soon as I complained, staff very accomodating. The pools are beautiful and although the hotel was full, we had no problem getting beds as many people preferred the beach.
Our room was big, modern and clean with a great pool view.
We didn't rate the buffet breakfast, the food wasn't covered up so we stuck to the fresh omelettes which were fine.
The bar is disappointing - next to the car park, very un-atmospheric and closes about 10pm! But so much is on the doorstep it doesn't matter. The pool bar is great however and the staff are really friendly - we got big measures too!
We felt well looked after at the Visual and found it a really relaxing place, we only went on the beach one day because we just loved staying around the pools and chilling, a very lazy holiday! The beach is more exciting - so much to see with the beach boys wheeling up and down with their barbecues and ice creams, it did work out quite expensive for a brolly and beds though so check before you buy!
Restaurants we liked - Rio, Cameroes. All clean and very very cheap.
Trips were a waste of money we felt - did the overnight to Olinda which is a beautiful place but had very little time there due to the usual unnecessary stops at local markets etc.
Also, did Heart of Brazil show - do it yourself instead cos we paid for a very ordinary buffet meal and the show is only a 15 min taxi drive anyway.
Felt very safe, families walking around at night, plenty of local police etc.
Definately recommend it, we met others who were on their second visit, and who chose the Visual because they'd heard good things last time.
I wanted to go to Rio but it's very very expensive - about £450 each for 2 nights. I would recommend trying to get a deal on the internet before you travel.

My friend and I (two single women) have just returned from a week's break to Brazil and LOVED IT!!! If from some of the other reviews you are looking for a 4 star + hotel you might be dissappointed as the Visual Praia is a good 3 star hotel. What makes it special and for us and so much better than the 4 star and 5 star hotels further up the coast is it's fantastic beach front location, cleaniness, nearness to Ponta Negra itself and the friendly and helpful staff!!!!

If you want non stop night life (we were in Cancun last year which is party city) then this may not be holiday for you BUT if you want to have fun, watch the colourful locals on the beach and enjoy meals out followed by Brazilian dancing then you will love it here. Best nights out are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. We loved Salsa Bar and Tahiti bar(Samba) best although Taverna pub good.

Very safe and easy to get around on foot and taxi. Brazilian cocktails fantastic.. We went to a local football match which was worth a visit for atmosphere alone. Also went on buggy safari, which was great fun!!

Whilst not big waves this is a surfers heaven and great to watch from your hotel room the early morning surfers.

A traditional Brazilian resort and loved by Scandanavian and Italian tourists this is only the second season that British operaters have come here so our advice get here quickly before mass tourism sets in!!! Very little English spoken so brush up your Portuguese before you come!!!
