The hotel Picinguaba overlooks a peaceful bay at the heart of the Natural Park of Serra do Mar, the tropical coastal forest running between Rio and São Paulo, about half an hour's drive south of Paraty. It is the only charming hotel in a 30km radius. It faces the sea and a 3 km-long protected sandy beach. The hotel offers (09) nine comfortable rooms all opening onto the natural surroundings and the sea, including a dream honeymoon Suite with en suite jacuzzi and a breathtaking view of the ocean. The local road stops at the beach and one has to walk the last 250m to the hotel, nestled in the forest.Everything here is attuned to the spirit of the place, with nothing to disturb nature's magic: no TV or telephone in the rooms, no Internet, no air-conditioning. This place is for you to be in a different world, the only sounds are the wind in the palm trees and the sea gently lapping the shore.Pousada Picinguaba was selected in HIP HOTELS as one of the 80 most extraordinary hotels around the world and was featured in National Geographic Stay List 2011.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

When reading the review of this hotel I felt compelled to respond all the overly harsh critics. This place is not a rip off. People that poorly rated this place are simply not cut for this kind of holidays. In Pousada Picinguaba, you are paying for adventure, great food and the amazing location. The staff is very willing, energetic and warm. If you like amazing western service, Brazil all together isn’t the right place. No matter how serious their jobs are, Brazilians will be very friendly and warm (sometimes perceived as unprofessional by westerners…). A comment on Prices I have noticed people complaining that prices are too high for the type of service they received, and that they corresponds to 5 star hotel prices. I don’t know of any top notch hotel located in such an

A beautiful location and cannot fault the staff. One word of warning though, This place is definitely not suitable for anyone with any walking difficulties at all. They advise on their website that you have to walk across the beach to get to it, but don't mention the steep hill and many steps.

First of all, let me come to the defence of the oft criticised staff. They may lack English skills (stick to the Commonwealth if that is an issue) but they are enthusiastic, kind and energetic. They are particularly warm to young children and unerringly smiling and helpful. Priscila deserves praise for her forebearance (on the receiving end of complaints) and resourcefulness. There are issues. The place especially in high season is not cheap (nor is Brazil) and local currency appreciation is visible in the cost of extras. Some items such as laundry should be included. In Summer/rainy season, the area is teaming with hungry insects and very hot (and this coincides with peak pricing) The fans in the rooms will not alleviate this but the hotel is a rudimentary set up

We stayed here from Monday 23 Oct - Weds 25 Oct, and didn't want to leave. The location of this place is priceless, and almost imcomparable. You arrive down a small track into another world -- a hidden cove, with a small village, that has a very close community. Your car/taxi has to pull over & then people take your bags and lead you a little uphill along a pathway to the Pousada, where you are warmly greeted. It's a good looking reception area, Bob Dylan gently playing over the sound system, arrival drink and a simple booking in procedure. The room we had was reasonably spacious, with the incredible views over the bay, to a deserted 3.5km beach. Five or so fishing boats gently bob around the bay (and whose catch you eat every night). Each room has a good balcony with a

As a matter of fact, my husband discovered Brasil throught the Bay of Picinguaba. He has been so delighted that we have already booked our flight and room to come back to the Pousada of Picinguaba in April 2007. I agree with Drogo, from Hamburg, when he says that the Pousada Picinguaba appeals to a certain type of person. It is not of course a hotel beeing part ot the Leading Hotels of the World, but that is what makes the "charm" of the location. It is so different and overwhole so true, the smiles are so real. It is not the regular " Have a good day" that you will hear in any shop or hotel in any corner of the world. By the way, breakfeast in Picinguaba , is delicious, with different fresch fruit juice every day, all king of different cakes and tasty fruits. Diner is a

If one were to use reason, it is practically impossible that each bad review seems to be answered with very postive responses that are all in the same style, whether they have been written from Paris, Bad Neuheim or New York. I am sorry to say that the bad reviwes are the corrrect ones. The location of the pousada is beautiful, but the pousada itself is a real dump with friendly staff but wholly inadequate management. If one really intended to help the people of the beautiful village, one would ensure that they get some basic training in how to deal with guests, for example, ensuring that drink orders are taken before dinner is served rather than after the main course is finished. That would have been a real investment. The hotel is overpriced, management is argumentative and

We are heavy travellers for both business and leisure and we thought we had found paradise in places like the Seychelles or on the Cape Verde Islands or on the Island of Reunion. Now we know better - paradise is in Picinguaba and Picinguaba is Paradise One can only "experience" Picinguaba – there are no words to describe the feeling and atmosphere of that very special place. The location, the views, the exotic flora and fauna, the green colors of the rain forest meeting the white and endless beaches in the bays of the area and the remote and peaceful fishing village of Picinguaba (which can hardly be found on any map) are just breathtaking. And the perfect place to enjoy all this is Pousada Picinguaba - a small luxury resort overlooking the bay of Picinguaba and offering the

The location is great: the village is charming and the hotel's swimming pool overlooks the bay above the void and that's really beautiful. But the price you pay and what you are expecting does not match what you get. Many thnigs are very anoying and it does affect your stay and your mood. First, the rooms: ok they are cute but quite small and basic, with no vsea view so again, it does not match a 240 euro fare. When you pay this price in European capitals, you get the most design and top hotels. The most anoying thing is the hotel manager who comes to your table every morning, basically asking you how you're gonna spend your monney today. It is very insisting and you feel like you must pay an activity or you're gonna upset her. I don't think I have ever seen this before and I

What’s your favourite flavour Ice cream? Mine is Rocky Road, and not just any Rocky Road, but the Rocky Road from a small ice cream shop near Paddy's Market in Sydney. However if everyone liked Rocky Road there wouldn’t be any other flavours to try. My point is clear; thank heavens for individual taste. My family and I have travelled a great deal around the world staying in accommodation ranging from beach huts in Thailand to five star spa resorts in Bali and the Maldives. I believe our experience gives us a good base to make a judgement on the Pousada Picinguaba. For my wife and our two sons of five and two this was, without doubt, one of the best holidays we have had. We were slightly disappointed by the size and quality of the room when we arrived. We did smart a bit at

We had a very memorable 10 days at the pousada. The pricey-ness mentioned on another review is I think due to the strength of the Brazilian currency. Our room was indeed without a seaview and didn't quite have the adjoining room we were led to believe (for our toddler, it was more of an entrance hall) but this was more than made up for by the attractive simple decor and indeed the whole relaxed air of the place, which abounded with natural charm. The staff didn't all speak English, but again their friendliness aand willingness to help more than made up for this. Priscilla was always at hand and she is fluent English. She asked us every evening how everything was going and checking we were ok. We had a 2 year old with us and they couldnt have been more helpful in catering
