Secret Garden Boutique Hotel is nestled in a quiet village, 5 minutes walk to Yulong He river in the beautiful rural Yangshou area and only 90 minutes taxi ride from Guilin North Station.
Take bamboo raft on the Yulong river or bicycle ride over to Baisha. English and Chinese is spoken and the comprehensive menu suits both local and international flavours (good kids’ menu with pancakes, spaghetti, pizza, toast etc.) Secret Garden Boutique Hotel was recommended to me by a friend who had stayed twice already and considered this place a gem; I’m inclined to agree! We stayed 5 very pleasant nights, rooms good size, impressive traditional courtyard layout; good impressions & photos.

This restaurant had the best kept secret. All their dishes were phenomenal but my favourite was the best sweet and sour pork I have had in my 7years of living in China. The staff were friendly and even the lemon tea came in the most beautiful kettle and tasted like heaven. What a pleasant place, gorgeous, well kept and excellent service. I will go back there everytime I am in the area and highly recomment you go there when you are in the area! Loved everything about it ♡♡♡

Yangshuo Secret Garden Boutique Hotel is a wonderful tranquil place close by the dragon river and the moon bridge. Yangshuo Secret Garden Boutique Hotel's menu in in English and caters for young children's tastes well with porridge, pancakes, and omelette; as well as offering speciality local dishes. If arriving by plane or train, arrange hotel pick-up/ drop-off, as the hotel is 45 minuted from Guilin station. Can wholeheartedly recommend.

We had a stopover at this beautiful charming hotel and restaurant while cruising the area with our rented tuktuk. We had lunch and were in awe of the beautiful old style buildings and cosy courtyards. The food and service was great.

A fascinating hotel and restaurant. A bit off from the main roads, silent and private. The inside is like a dream - more a private monastery than a hotel, but with all the amenities. Staff speak good English. The food at the restaurant was the best I got in China during all my stay.

I write this review with trepidation as I don't really want to many people to know about The Secret Garden - it should remain as it's name says! This is very unfair to the owners and the people that work there so I have decided to "shout it from the rooftops" - obviously not the hotels as it would spoil the tranquility of this 'sleepy' old rural village.
The rooms at this rustic but charming hotel have been renovated with traditional touches while providing comfort and all the necessary facilities. The owners and staff are very friendly and efficient and more than willing to help with any request. We booked everything through the hotel after we arrived - restaurants, rafting, shows, biking, massages - and used the hotel car throughout. Maybe a fraction more expensive but worth it as made everything easy and hassle free.
We enjoyed the breakfast - healthy fruits and yoghurt followed by eggs and bacon - maybe made better after a long brisk walk in the morning.
Lovely place with great walks and biking while not being that far from the hub of Yangshuo.
There are a few areas for improvement and one would be the air-conditioning and lighting in the Family room. Not an issue during the colder months but we stayed in August. The bedrooms are great but it is just too hot and dark in the living area in the centre.
Despite this it is a fabulous place to stay and feel like you are really experiencing the 'real' Yangshuo.

My most FAVORITE place to stay in all of China. We so loved The Secret Garden. What a special place, run by very lovely and tirelessly accommodating people-- Faye and Fengzi (and their contacts of thousands). I was lucky enough to have stumbled upon their website as I was planning a six week trip to China. My son and daughter-in-law live in Shanghai. They wanted to get out of the big city for their holidays and wow did we ever accomplish that, and more, with our fabulous stay outside Yangshuo at The Secret Garden.

I had started planning far in advance, so was able to drive Faye crazy with multiple emails about the Secret Garden, Yangshuo and the surrounding area. She always answered immediately with helpful information and arranged our pickup from Guilin airport as she arranged so many adventures for us. When we four arrived at the airport we were met by the driver, no problem. It was about an hour and half ride from Guilin, past Yangshuo and to the lovely teeny little town where the Secret Garden is hiding among the rice fields and karst. I highly recommend the van ride especially if you are four or more people. Otherwise, a boat or a bus to Yangshuo, then, find a taxi to Jiuxian (good luck with that when you don't know where you are going). Although, knowing Faye, she would be able to send a taxi to where you ended up in Yangshuo. She is a transport magician.

We were amazed when we arrived in this teeny little town and the van drove down a single lane road to the middle of nowhere. Beautiful nowhere. Check out their website and read about the incredible Qing Dynasty buildings that Fengzi has painstakingly and amazingly restored to such beauty. Bring some baijiu (Chinese wine) and see if he is not too exhausted to talk about the ongoing construction process and fascinating small town politics.

We stayed in the wonderful suite upstairs in the Courtyard House. I highly recommend this suite, though my son and his wife loved their standard room in the front building. We revealed in the spaciousness and oh, the views out all the many many windows, front and back. The king size bed was incredibly comfortable. I loved my view from the bathroom sink, looking out over the rice fields and to the karst. The shower was perfect and the water was hot. Great towels, great everything. There is a sitting room that is comfy and has one of my favorite amenities throughout China (or, anywhere…) each room is outfitted with its own 5 gallon water dispenser with hot and cold tap. What a luxury! How thoughtful! I can never seem to get enough water to drink so this was heaven. There is also a 5 gallon water dispenser (with tea bags by the side) in the common area of the Courtyard.

Faye helped us to arrange our excursions. She set us up with the bamboo boats--ordering the taxi, getting us the tickets, suggesting where to go after. For example, taxi to the Li River for the cruise on our own boat (the four of us).
The Li is where the incredible karst image on the 20 yuan note is. Instead of a taxi home after, we wished to take the local bus to Yangshuo. Faye told us how to find the bus, then, with her precious business card in hand, we were able to call her at days end (her cell phone is attached to her hand) from Yangshuo so she could order a taxi to pick us up and return us to the Garden (about a 20 minute drive). What a lovely day. If we had been arranging on our own, the logistics would have taken monumental figuring out even though my son has Mandarin. A lovely day.

One day, we told her we would like to go on the non-motorized bamboo boats (another incredible river excursion). Oh, she says, hmmm, national holiday it was. Many Chinese tourists. This is just what they were all doing that day as well. But Faye and her trusty cell phone arranged everything for us. Taxi to the boats, the breathtaking bamboo boat ride, then on to Yangshuo for the not-to-be-missed Impression San Jie Liu Light Show. And then back home. Of course, Faye had arranged the tickets to the show as well as a driver to return us safely to our little bit of heaven.

One day we said we wanted to take a walk in the karst. Fengzi said (between hammering nails) go out back there (behind the hotel) and there is a great walk to a deserted town. Another adventure, right in our back yard.

The food was great we had breakfast at Secret Garden everyday and some dinners. The staff is lovely and helpful. We could just sit around the outside areas of the Secret Garden and drink pijo (beer) and hang out. That would be fine.

One night, Fengzi took us to dinner at his friends' house, the local Communist Party Leader. What an amazing experience. It was an honor to be in the farm house of a local, exchanging stories and learning how to drink and toast properly ("friends, cheers" knock the hot pot with glass and drink--each time anyone starts the "friends, cheers" refrain. Uh Oh!) Good thing we were all walking. This is a small local dining and cultural exchange mini program Fengzi has arranged. We paid a nominal sum to our Chinese host for the amazing food he so beautifully prepared and were rewarded with an unforgettable night of fun, friendship and food. This was our first experience with hot pot and after this we could not get enough.

The day we had to leave Secret Garden, we had an idea to run past Faye, perhaps we could leave a lot earlier in the day for our evening flight out of Guilin and have our driver take us to the Dragon's Backbone--Longji Rice Terraces outside of Guilin. This added many hours to our trip yet she was able to arrange it last minute with the driver even though it was such a busy time during this Chinese holiday. Many hours in the van but it was worth it to walk up the beautiful terraces before finally flying back to Shanghai.

Do not miss the Secret Garden. I would fly back to China just to stay there for a few weeks and forget everything else. I could go on and on about it and Faye and Fengzi and the lovely staff. So, please ask me if you have any questions! I will try and post photos with captions.

We were looking for authentic place to stay in Yangshuo, which would also be comfortable. Staying in Yangshuo Secret Garden we got all of this and much more. The Secret Garden is beautiful, friendly and authentic, located in a gorgeous setting.

THE BUILDINGS
When we arrived we got a tour of the property and surroundings. During the tour we learned a lot about village life and local culture. The hotel was a renovation project, located in a small rural village outside Yangshuo. The buildings themselves are absolutely gorgeous. They are rich 19th century farmhouses, beautifully renovated using local labor. There's lots of art in the hotel and everywhere you can find original features. It's obvious that a great deal of love and respect for the original buidlings made the renovation so succesfull.

ROOM
We stayed in one of the suites. The room was huge!!! And absolutely gorgeous. Colors are beautiful, decoration tasteful. All rooms have AC, which is a neccessity. The bathroom is very big and has a seperate shower and toilet. We saw a couple of the standard rooms as well and they are smaller than the suite, but still very big, and equally beautiful.

LOCATION
You're right between the karst mountains, with rice paddies outside the front door. In the village you can find geese sharing the streets with the locals. For us this was excellent. We like to experience local culture and like to stay away from busy touristic places. Yangshuo is roughly a 10 minute taxi ride away (50 rmb), which was perfect for us. During the day we got to experience living in the stunning country side, and in the evening we could take a taxi if we wanted to eat or shop in Yangshuo.

SERVICE
The owners and staff are superfriendly and welcoming. We had great talks with them which left us with a better understanding of Yangshuo and China. They went out of their way to make us feel welcome. For instance, they have a fruit tree in the garden which produces very tasty fruit (no idea what the name is). One of the members of staff actually climbed the tree for us to get us some fruit so we could have a taste (it was lovely).

ACTIVITIES
There's lots to do in the area. Right next door you can rent bikes. We took a bike ride through the country side organized by the Yangshuo Secret Garden. Got to see farmers harvesting and different species of plants and animals we had never seen before. We biked to the river where we took a bamboo raft downstream. Very relaxing. Downstream our guide was waiting for us to take us back to the hotel. We also did a Chinese cooking course organized through the Secret Garden in Yangshuo town. We highly recommend it! We didn't have much time to do other activities but I know it's possible to organize other activities as well.

We highly recommend the Yangshuo Secret Garden to anyone interested in local culture, beautiful nature, old Chinese architecture, and anyone who wants to experience an authentic village stay in comfort. Next time we're in Yangshuo, we will definately stay there again.

An unexpected pleasure in the middle of the countryside. The service was personal and spectacular, to be honest. A boutique hotel with only a handful of rooms, but a restaurant menu like you where in a big hotel. The rooms are super-cozy and the food is very very good. Very Chinese country setting in an amazing environment. Probably not the first place you think of when you go to China, but I whole-heartedly recommend staying in this place when you happen to be around.

I spent 2 nights at Secret Garden in May with my kids. The staff, especially Peter, are really friendly and helpful. The location is little bit further out of Yangshou than I expected, but the landscape and surrounding village is so beautiful I was really happy to be in a village and not in Yangshou, which is quite touristy. Despite the monsoon rains, we had a great stay. Despite the loss of power both mornings to our family room, we loved our accommodation. Breakfast by candlelight - the kids thought that was great. Our family suite was rustic and roomy. The only downside was the damp - being closest to the mountain, the rains had seeped through the downstairs walls, but again, to be honest, we didn't really care that much because Secret Garden is such a lovely and unusual hotel. The food was great, the staff are terrific, the driver Mr Mao was very reliable. Peter organised a tour to the Gold Water Cave on route back to Guilin Airport. I felt really relaxed after our short stay. Great!

The nearest ATM is in Yangshuo town, so about 7or 8 Km but, yes, we do accept credit cards in the restaurant so you should be able tosettle up your final bill without getting stuck with too little or too much cash.
