Detailed Reviews

A country side hotel, stone floors and walls, slightly dirty. Minimalist basic rooms with poor lighting. Had to walk outside in the courtyard to get to the room. Constantly had to walk in the rain to walk to the restaurant or reception. I fell walking down a step in the courtyard and badly injured my back. The stone floor was very slippery and there was no railing for support. After asking the management to address this danger I was told that they will work on improving this risky location only after the touristy season is over….

Guilin is breathtaking, and there is no better place than the Secret Garden to experience this incredible part of China. The hotel is off the beaten path, down windy roads that make you wonder if the driver as the correct address. Even the entranceway leaves you doubting, as it is understated and there is much construction. Once you are shown into the hotel proper, you see its real beauty. Each room is unique, filled with beautiful wooden décor, quiet, charming, and romantic. The path to each room is different, with stone walkways and hidden stairways, so it is easy to get lost at first, but fun to explore if you do! The staff are friendly and helpful, and make you feel right at home. Food is fabulous, as are the quaint tables where you can sit and enjoy the foliage. We enjoyed every minute of this hotel and our time in Guilin!

Having stayed mainly in hostels (which were excellent but still hostels) we had booked The Secret Garden as a restful and unusual oasis towards the end of our 3 week China trip, having read all about its history (past and present) on the website. We found it to be everything we had hoped for and more. Yes, as some reviewers have said, your opinion can be affected by the room(s) you are in, but we loved that each was unique and as true as possible to its original use and characteristics. Our group of 3 had 2 rooms - each delightfully done with lovely details. One had its own little terrace/balcony and wonderful views over the incredible rooftops to the karst scenery immediately around the hotel. Our room (Plum Blossom I think, large and close to the reception courtyard) was huge and beautifully done, with its own sitting room - though you do have to be careful as the huge windows of the bedroom area do leave you very much on view! And yes, it can be a creaky place but that goes with the territory in our view. We really enjoyed wandering round the whole site and it was also such a valuable experience to be able to have a walk around the immediate 'hamlet' including seeing the patchwork of fields with their different crops and animals beneath the incredible mountains. Also memorable was strolling across fields and road to the main part of the village - just real life going on that will stay with us forever. Bike hire is available to go further afield - also very worthwhile. We loved it so much that one of us returned with 3 friends later in the year. This hotel is an ongoing project and the care and attention and time being given to it is much appreciated by us. Nice food, eating areas and staff too!

I have traveled to China many, many times. This experience at the Secret Garden Hotel was by far the best visit I have had. This hotel was a true Chinese experience beginning with the rural environment, the beautiful traditional Chinese hotel, the food, the staff, and all the experiences we were able to enjoy while there. The hotel was very comfortable and was kept very clean. I traveled with my 18 year old daughter, my sister and my 16 year old neice. We each had a unique experience that pleased each of us in our own ways. The staff was fantastic. They arranged all ground transportation, helped to make suggestions and helped us to plan our activities. The Yangshou area had many days of activities including traditional Chinese shopping, Chinese cooking classes, fantastic Li River boat rides and exploring old traditional villages. We stayed only for three days and we definitely could have stayed days longer. When we weren't out exploring the area, we enjoyed the many different sitting areas both indoors and outside as well. We ate all of our meals in the hotel and found each meal to be of excellent quality with easy friendly service. The entire cost of everything we did was amazingly inexpensive and that was a nice gift as well. If you want to see the real China and if you are adventurous and looking for unique experiences I couldn't recommend a better place. Enjoy yourselves and enjoy the staff that do everything they can to make you feel welcomed. The Secret Garden is fabulous!!!!

We spent 2 nights here are could have easily stayed longer. The location is fantastic and feels like a chance to see a bit if real china. The hotel itself is beautiful, coupling traditional buildings with a bit of luxury. What made the trip though was the staff, they could not do enough for us. They planned amazing trips, have us great tips and made fabulous food. I would totally recommend this place.

+1
This location was a GREAT find! It's off the busy path, clean, spacious both in the rooms and common areas, the food was excellent (and reasonably priced) and the staff were SUPERB. You can rent bikes directly (but they aren't in the best shape) through the hotel then pay at the end. If you're a bike guru I'd go through one of the larger companies - but we just wanted to spend the day on a mountain bike going all over and they were perfect (about 4 hrs for each of 2 days). There isn't anywhere to get cash nearby, but you settle up with the hotel at the end for everything and they take credit card.
We hired a driver to go from and back to the airport through the hotel and it was 290 RMB each way.
There is wifi in the common areas for free.
After biking through Yangshuo town, I wouldn't stay in town - I would instead stay where we did at the Secret Garden!

Secret Garden does indeed feel like a secret - it is hidden in a rural village a short distance from the hub of Yangshuo.
My boyfriend and I stayed for 3 nights in May 2014 and had a lovely time here, there were tears (from me!) when we left!
The rooms are rustic and tastefully designed with lots of charm and traditional touches. The courtyards within the hotel are lovely, and make for some great breakfast spots. Breakfast itself is not amazing - with the Chinese set menu faring better than the Western one, but for the price it is great value.
A really special and romantic place to stay, and definitely recommended as a base for outdoor activities around Yangshuo.

Washington DC, District of Columbia230 contributions78 helpful votesHow Close is the nearest atm to this hotel? Does the hotel take credit cards for tours or for its restaurant?
I'm closing out my trip here so I don't want too much cash, but on the other hand I don't want to get stuck here if there's no nearby atm.
The nearest ATM is in Yangshuo town, so about 7or 8 Km but, yes, we do accept credit cards in the restaurant so you should be able tosettle up your final bill without getting stuck with too little or too much cash.
