We loved our stay here. We had a river cabin for a family of 3 and it was just perfect. The sounds of the jungle ans the River are amazing. We were treated like friends as soon as we arrived. The family dinner is a great way to meet people. We met interesting people everyday. Food was good. It is a family friendly hotel and it was one of the highlights of our trip. Pia always makes sure that we are ok. There is hot water in the shower. It is possible to walk to Semuc but expect about 1h. Yoga in the morning is fantastic.

This hotel is in the middle of a Cacao farm which means that you are surrounded by trees and birds, I love nature so in this sense, it was a great option. The river pass by the property, I was able to access it when I wanted and enjoy its beauty. The concept is beautiful, the views from the shared spaces are gorgeous; it's is definitely quiet and suitable for any type of traveler, the food in general was great, all vegetarian and fresh, however, there were some dishes that were a bit salty, specially the black beans. I loved the space, however, my room was run down, the toilet wasn't as clean as it should have been, the bedding was terrible, towels were stained and blankets had holes, which means that the place is not well taken care and for the price I paid, I would have expected more comfort and a better taken place room. I have been in many eco hostels and I know the owners could have done a way better job about maintaining the space and make it more attractive. It's definitely a beautiful place so I guess, you pay for the views, the location and the river and not for comfort or tidiness. The communication with the front desk was not great and I missed about important information about their shuttles to other parts of Guatemala, make sure you ask in advance.

This hotel was so amazing! The start is already nice and adventurous. Approximately 35-40 min from lanquin with a 4x4 car standing in the back, to arrive ad the Utopia hotel. When you arrive, the staff is waiting for you and give you a warm welcome. They tell you everything about the hotel and its surroundings. Together with all the other guests you can eat diner or breakfast (which is amazing). The owner is such a nice person who has a very good sense of humor! Your journey through Guatamala is not complete if you haven't visited this Hotel! I'll be back!

Rooms: rooms are horrible, depressing. Sheets and towels were ripped and dirty. The bathroom was rustic to say the least, toilet did not always work, no hot water in the shower. Food: the meals were surprisingly very good! Big portions and delicious. One option for dinner as they do it "family style", which makes it a bit harder for people with dietary requirements. Dinners in the shared space were very enjoyable, we met a lot of amazing people. Service: staff arrogant, not very welcoming. We had a scorpion in the room, we mentioned it to the manager who looked surprised we were asking to have it removed after him telling us it could be venomous. Staff does not tell you the whole story when booking you activities. It feels like they just want to sell, they keep a lot of information to themselves.

We booked a tour of Semuc Champey through Pablo from Utopia. At the meeting point the next day we met our tour guide, Ricardo. He was amazing, and ensured that we had the best experience possible. We were supposed to go into the caves first, but, after seeing a large group enter, he suggested we wait until it was quieter, as the caves are small. Once we did the caves in the afternoon I could see why Ricciardo suggested this. We started our day with jumps from the swing and the waterfall. Ricardo was so patient as we stopped to take pictures or ask questions. We then did the tubing down the river - which was so relaxing- followed by the caves. I was quite nervous upon entering the caves, but Ricardo reassured me. After a lunch break we did the hike to the viewpoint, and then we ended our amazing day with swimming in the pools themselves. I would highly recommend booking through Pablo at Utopia for this tour. I think the groups on a whole are smaller than the tours that the larger hostels organise. This means you can have a more personalised experience and you are not waiting around in the caves for too long. We also booked our shuttle to Lake Atitlan with Pablo and there were no problems with this either.

Utopia Before our arrival at utopia, the manager, Pia, very kindly got in touch to make sure we had adequate transportation booked, as the road to Semuc Champey is only accessibly by 4x4. When we arrived at Utopia, we were warmly welcomed by Pia and her team, who made efforts to explain the lodge and its workings, and the tours and experiences available to us. So far, so good. But then we descended from Utopia into Dystopia. We had booked a riverside cabin; I have never been held hostage in an underground bunker, but I can only assume that when I am, it will share the interior design and ambience of our cabin at Utopia. A single bare bulb swung from the ceiling. I have never seen a bed I wanted to get into less; the mattress and pillows are what you might expect to find in a skip. I must hope that the bed linen was clean, but it held a certain funk. The pillows were not something I wanted to put my face on. The curtains sagged on the piece of old string from which they were suspended. The shower curtain was attached by cable tie to another piece of twine, and the hot tap fell off in my hand. I appreciate that we’re in the jungle, but there is no excuse for bed linen and towels that ought to have been donated to a dogs’ home many years ago. Especially not at $60 per night. Despite Pia and her team’s sunniness and hospitality, nothing could outweigh the vibe of the rooms - depressing, overpriced, gloomy cells.

Me and my boyfriend had an amazing stay at Utopia. The team is super nice relaxed and helpful. They are really easy going people and respectful of others. They propose great tours the Semuc Champey tour is really worth it because you do a lot of things : cave (it is good fun), semuc champey, swing in the river, el mirador and you have to do the tubing at the end it’s definitely the best idea activity. Also really good tour is the chocolate one. You have no idea about chocolate before this, so you learn a lot and you can prepare your own chocolate fudge. Yoga class in the morning is also perfect to start the day. You also have to take dîner, it is fresh from the day, the menu changes every day. It is vegetarian/vegan We stayed only 3 days but we could’ve stay one week, to relax. Definitely recommend this place, if we come back in the region we will go back at Utopia for sure

Truly utopia! It is located in the middle of the jungle and is so beautiful. The rooms are great and there are many options. The scenery and commons areas are even better. A huge deck overlooking the mountains and jungle is where you will hang out and eat your meals. They serve breakfast lunch and dinner, they have snacks, desserts and drinks! They are all vegetarian meals and the kitchen can accommodate all dietary restrictions. The food is absolutely incredible. The option of yoga in the morning with Instructor Mahala is the perfect way to start your day. It’s super close to semuc champey and they offer well priced tours that can be set up quickly with the front desk whenever!

We heard and read bad things about most of the places to stay in or near Semuc. From loud music parties until midnight or later to poor accommodation to being trapped at a place, as there is nowhere else and being ripped off. Utopia has all of these. When you arrive it looks lovely and there seemed like lots of people there. After a while we realised lots of them are volunteers who stay for free and do all the work. We have experience this model before where a place is full of volunteers. The problem is they do the work to a standard they can get away with, as they don’t really want to work. For example, when we went to the room, we noticed a large mud mark on one of the pillows. It was mud, so we checked the sheets and found several long hairs. It was all a bit disgusting. The cleaning was done to a poor standard as the volunteers are doing it. The front desk where you order everything is run by volunteers, there were 4 or 5 of them behind it whenever we went to it. However, none of them want to help you. We stood in front of them and no one asked if they could help us. You see none of them want to do anything and they are waiting for one of the others to ask if you want anything. It’s a terrible business model for guests. Then when we did make an order it was 4 times out of 5 wrong, again the volunteers aren’t interested in working. Our food was wrong, stuff didn’t get ordered and so on. However, it ssems it all goes on the bill, which you don’t see. When you pay at the end, you are just given a total for each day, so you can’t check what they have put on it unless you ask to see each bill. So leave plenty of time to check out, as they will have to find each bill. They also put a 10% service charge on the total bill, which we were not informed about. I asked why this is as everyone is a volunteer, so they are not being paid. And the guy couldn’t answer it, so I put words in his mouth. So beware if you go here, the 10% extra is just another way this place is ripping you off. Away from the ears of the volunteers every guest we spoke to complained about the payment system. A couple of girls were doing a day tour and said that in the morning the guy behind the desk told them how much the packed lunch they ordered would be. They said they did not order a packed lunch. He guy behind the desk started to argue with them and called them a liar. They just kept saying that they hadn’t ordered it and don’t want it. They later discovered that it was added to their bill anyway. It seems any mistake that a volunteer made with an order was still charged to the guest. Watch out this place is a massive rip off. Looking back on it, we would have been better off staying somewhere, as our food bill was so high. In fact this worked out as one of the most expensive places we stayed and we didn’t rough it.
