If you are in Guatemala this is the place you have to visit. We slept in the small wooden house just by the river. Fantastic eating relaxing area with the view on the mountains and jungle. So nice people who are providing the place. They all were extremely halpful and kind. Vegeterian place, the food delicious. Super recommended!
We heard and read bad things about most of the places to stay in or near Semuc. From loud music parties until midnight or later to poor accommodation to being trapped at a place, as there is nowhere else and being ripped off. Utopia has all of these. When you arrive it looks lovely and there seemed like lots of people there. After a while we realised lots of them are volunteers who stay for free and do all the work. We have experience this model before where a place is full of volunteers. The problem is they do the work to a standard they can get away with, as they don’t really want to work. For example, when we went to the room, we noticed a large mud mark on one of the pillows. It was mud, so we checked the sheets and found several long hairs. It was all a bit disgusting. The cleaning was done to a poor standard as the volunteers are doing it. The front desk where you order everything is run by volunteers, there were 4 or 5 of them behind it whenever we went to it. However, none of them want to help you. We stood in front of them and no one asked if they could help us. You see none of them want to do anything and they are waiting for one of the others to ask if you want anything. It’s a terrible business model for guests. Then when we did make an order it was 4 times out of 5 wrong, again the volunteers aren’t interested in working. Our food was wrong, stuff didn’t get ordered and so on. However, it ssems it all goes on the bill, which you don’t see. When you pay at the end, you are just given a total for each day, so you can’t check what they have put on it unless you ask to see each bill. So leave plenty of time to check out, as they will have to find each bill. They also put a 10% service charge on the total bill, which we were not informed about. I asked why this is as everyone is a volunteer, so they are not being paid. And the guy couldn’t answer it, so I put words in his mouth. So beware if you go here, the 10% extra is just another way this place is ripping you off. Away from the ears of the volunteers every guest we spoke to complained about the payment system. A couple of girls were doing a day tour and said that in the morning the guy behind the desk told them how much the packed lunch they ordered would be. They said they did not order a packed lunch. He guy behind the desk started to argue with them and called them a liar. They just kept saying that they hadn’t ordered it and don’t want it. They later discovered that it was added to their bill anyway. It seems any mistake that a volunteer made with an order was still charged to the guest. Watch out this place is a massive rip off. Looking back on it, we would have been better off staying somewhere, as our food bill was so high. In fact this worked out as one of the most expensive places we stayed and we didn’t rough it.…
We who are not vegetarian did actually enjoy the food very much and thought the creations where great. Ecological and environmental friendly. Many of the staff work for room and food and where travellers like us and so service minded and we loved our two nights here!
Absolutely loved my time here. A beautiful view and epic food and company. I was super sick when I arrived and the staff let me go straight to bed and I did the proper check on procedure the next day. I was so thankful for that. Such a relaxing place away from the hustle of other Guatemalan places. I extended a couple days here and I expect you will to!!
Came here based on recommendations from others. Beds are super cheap and food is good. The views are nice from the hostel and you can go swimming from the hostel. I stayed in a 4 bed female dorm and was happy that the room has screens to keep the critters out. Several people have complained about the WiFi so be sure to book your future accommodations ahead of time. Recommendations to the staff would be to keep track of when you ask guests if they are extending and want packed meals. I was asked 4 times.
