I had contacted the resort to cancel my reservation due to the illnesses. They were willing to let me rebook for next year without losing my deposit. Yesterday I received an email that they have found the source of the contamination (one of their food distributors) and have changed suppliers. They offered for us to keep our reservation for this year, and we have decided to trust that they have solved the problem. I sure hope it wasn't the wrong decision!

We ended 2 weeks at AKR Dec 22. The resort specializes in easy dives under the supervision of a competent dive master who will select locations / conditions suited to the general diving community or least experienced diver. There are lots of newly certified divers. Beginning divers will welcome easy boat entry and exits in clear warm waters. We had 4 rough days the last trip that I chose to opt out. If the north side is rough, the dive boats will go around to the south side. One side or other is usually calm enough to dive. The PADI fac offers a short fine tuning buoyancy clinic as well as any other SCUBA subject you might wish to address. PS: GI / abdominal issues continue to pester AKR. 5 of my group of 6 came down with symptoms from minor on up. AKR is pursuing all available avenues to eliminate the problem. Bring "Immodium AD". Pills are better than the nasty tasting liquid. Bring a prescription for the broad spectrum antibiotic CIPRO if you can. It seems to stop symptoms in 24 hours. Water is warm there, I don't use a wetsuit at all! But visibility is down a bit from earlier in the year. Say 30 to 80 ft.

I have been to AKR five times wiothout sickness issues and in Oct. 2018 I did get stomach issues. I felt that it was from eating the "warm" slaw. My husband also got it. Not fun! We noticed that many were not on the dive boats the next two days! Take all needed precautions and keep your hands clean. Imodium in your bag. Not stopping me from returning to this lovely resort and dive vacation. We will be there again in May 2019.
