For over 30 years, Carabao dive resort has been welcoming guests to Koh Tao's quiet, southern bay of Chalok Baan Khao. We have remained at heart a family business but have grown to now include a highly rated Scuba diving school, Thai & international restaurant, cocktail bar, travel & tour agent, and a brand new swimming pool. We have a full range of private Air-conditioned rooms, fan rooms and dormitory, all with views of the beach and across the Gulf of Thailand. Koh Tao's pier town and main nightlife area are no more than 4km's away meaning you can enjoy their delights but also retreat into the chilled, friendly, nature of Chalok village and relaxed hospitality of Carabao.

Me and my girlfriend stayed in a 16 bed dorm room with AC for 6 nights whilst we completed our SSI diving course! It was ver nice and seemed clean! We met some great people who were also on our diving course and slept well mostly, the only real issue for us was the noise from the bar, especially when you have to get up early to dive! But it's important to understand that noise is a thing, and although you want to dive other people might not and prefer to drink. All in all it was great and reception was very helpful! Dive course was amazing! ( wrote about it on their trip advisor! ) just bare in mind it will be noisy when booking!

We initially chose this hotel in order to take part in the diving course. However, we ended up just snorkelling instead.

The hostel is located a bit out of the way and costs 150baht per person to get to the main town area. If I was to come back to Koh Tao I would prefer to be closer to Sairee Beach as it’s quite trek away.

The restaurant has good food and is very cheap however the staff are rude and impatient, they would get extremely frustrated with us when we didn’t understand what they were saying and annoyed at us when we didn’t finish our patatas bravas- which I’m telling you were not to any standard patatas bravas!!

The man who works behind the desk was amazing !! So kind and helpful, we missed our boat and he managed to get us on the next one for free with a taxi to it for only 50 baht. He also gave us tickets for breakfast even though they weren’t included in our booking.
I highly recommend taking part in the oxygen tours snorkelling day trip!! It’s only 600 baht and is such good value for money with a taxi to and from the hostel included.

There’s an amazing restaurant a stones throw away called south beach and good breakfast/brunch spots around the hostel.

The rooms are very basic with air conditioning that’s turned on at night and off very early in the morning. So we ended up wrapping up at night and waking up at 7am sweating
The showers and bathroom are BASIC so if you’re high maintenance this is not the place for you but we found it manageable.

The atmosphere isn’t great - the hostel is extremely quiet with most people in bed before 11, there’s a bar area but I never saw anyone using it and there isn’t any comfortable lounge areas to relax in.

If you are looking for a good place to dive this is probably a great place for you to stay.
However, if you’re not sure about diving I would recommend staying somewhere more central as there are loads of different diving schools across the island.

It's a good place to spend some days.
I shared a room of 16 people but it was a good price.
It is just 3 min walking from the main road where all the dive centers are.
The personal is nice and so kind.

Had emailed the accommodation to arrange a stay and dive package for 9 nights. Ended up arriving 5 days early and messaged for accommodation to which we were told yes no issue..
Got collected in the taxi and turned up to.. A green pool which we were told would be fixed 'tomorrow' it wasnt fixed 3 days later whoch ment we couldnt start our diving, room was basic but no fridge!! Use the communal fridge but u cant access it past 7pm! Towels for bedsheets, flush the loo and get smells from drains, camera looking directly onto our balcony so no privicey. Tried to get a meal at 6.30pm with our i year old son 2 which we were tols no food for guests unless we had prebooked diving before covid!!
Manager had 8 yappy chiuauas which woke us up at 5.30 on morning 1, 6.30 on morning 2 and 6am on morning 3.. sat at thebar for 5 mins on day 2 to get a drink.and was just ignored for 5 mins so went next door for beers and use their pool (100b per person) beach full of dog poo and sea not clean.. dirty grounds and over flowing communal bins. The guy Matteo who we had arranged our stay with messaged us on day2 to see how we were doing.. when we told him all our issues he never replied.. out of a 14 day stay we stayed 3 nights while we arranged suitable accommodation for our family and diving facilities.. quite frankly the manager couldbt give a dam about the customers.. cant comment about diving as we couldnt do it due 2 green pool

Stayed here with my partner for 3 nights to do the open water diving course & a refresher for him. I didn’t complete the course due to my own issues but my partner continued to go out and dive with the group and I was allowed to come and just chill on the boat which was lovely. Matteo the manager was really understanding and incredibly friendly and approachable and made our stay very memorable.

The rooms are very simple but it’s to be expected with the price as the rooms are very much hostel style. Lots of backpackers come and go so great to meet new people. Our room had a balcony with a beautiful sea view and a clothes rail to hang wet clothes.

We had burgers twice at the adjoining restaurant, mine was a vegetarian burger which I was pretty impressed with as it was a homemade bean burger - very tasty.

Some other great places to eat & drink locally too, a really nice community vibe.

Overall we had an amazing time! We were very sad to be leaving. The diving course package is great value for money, there’s a very friendly atmosphere here and in a beautiful location. Thank you!

This place was recommended by a travel agency in Bangkok and seemed like a good budget choice at the time. We stayed three nights with no AC (fan room), and for the quality of the room seemed to be paying to much money. The room seemed to have hopping bugs which I am guessing was some sort of sand flea, unsure. Wi-fi worked in the rooms, no actual computer present. The adjoining restaurant was nothing special;however, had a pool table which was fun. The staff at the restaurant seemed like they hated working there by their overall presence with guests. The beach in front was not good so we never stayed there. The staff was unfriendly and unhelpful.
Their snorkeling equipment was actually great and we able to rent for 24hours for a cheap price.
After talking with people there was a lot of the other Cheaper options nearby. Do some research, or if you have to stay here, stay one night and just walk to the other bungalows or guesthouses for a better place and better value.
We were not affiliated with the dive school so no opinion there.

This was not good, even if the price was low. The room had almost no water in the shower and it was cold. They should take out the TV and get in a fridge and a waterboiler in stead. There was no beachtowels or sunbeds. The location is so good so they should Get more out of it.

Do not go in this hotel, I never see the manager make a smile or be nice with us ONE time. Air conditioner cost 800 bahts per night (like 40$ canadian). There's people working on another new hotel just next to us at 7:00 am, so forget it to relax and also, my brother hurt himself in a scooter accident and the manager never help us or let us use her phone to call our insurances (who pay for the call) he was bleeding a lot and she never did something to help us. We'll never come back here for sure, don't do the same mistake, it was horrible.

Response from CarabaoDiving K, Guest Relations Manager at Carabao Diving Koh Tao
Responded 5 Jun 2017
Hi Audreythevoice, Thankyou for your honest review. I am sorry to hear what happened to you during your stay with us. We have had a big change in management and staff since your stay. I have been here 4 months and in this time I have seen how helpful all of our staff is and we have always helped someone in trouble. I am not sure who this was but I can only apologize on their behalf. Regarding the air conditioning, it is true that it is not cheap but this is the same everywhere on Koh Tao as there is a problem providing enough electricity for the whole island. As we are directly on the beach we usually have a cool breeze and a fan room is enough to be able to sleep comfortably at night. We hope you still enjoyed your stay on Koh Tao. best regards Lily L. Loved my stay here. Best value on the island and it's on the beach. Very friendly staff on the resort side. My open water course was worth while (especially for the value). Basile was my instructor and he was patient and friendly to me. He even went the extra mile in teaching me things that weren't required.

Suggested improvements that really are nit picks: bar and restaurant experience could be better (staff member questioned my peanut allergy which I found troubling as it is a common allergy that people die from), AC could run longer until 12 if people want to sleep in.

A friend and I wanted to get our OWD certifications done after attending a wedding on Koh Samui. After a bit of research I decided on the Carabao Dive Resort due to price and location (a bit off the beaten path). When we arrived on the pier there was transport already arranged. We met Matteo upon arrival and were immediately greeted warmly. The mood was very laid back and relaxing. Our instructor Xavier and assistant instructor Marjorie were more than professional while also being very approachable. We never felt nervous or unsafe at any moment and by the time we were diving we were confident in the skills we’d been taught, enabling us to enjoy every minute of our dives. The experience exceeded my expectations and then some! I would go back in a heartbeat.
