Everything was perfect, the staff (nice and helpfull), the rooms (very nice and clean), the site (access to the reef !!), the beach bar (good food and drink). The beach is cool, clean and quiet (specially in the morning and evening). There are several good restaurants near the beach you can also go. We are used to 5 stars hôtel and our Montalay stay was really good, you can go there with no doubt.

Great location at the more peaceful side of the island, great amenities like beachside pool, restaurant, etc. Only the budget room was on the more expensive side for what you get (only fan and share bathroom) but the other advantages made up for it.

We stayed for 5 nights. We had the best stay! The staff was fantastic. Hotel and rooms are spotless . The snorkeling out front is amazing. Kids loved the jumping rock. They jumped every afternoon for a few hours, a big kid highlight. Happy hour was fun. Food was great and a good price. Thanks guys!!

Travelling with my family (we are 2 adults and a 10 year old child), we chose a cottage with a sea view for a few days. The main reason was to stay close to the Calypso diving club in Tanote bay. We know that in Thailand, it is not uncommon to be proposed a one bed room for a 3 member family (2 adults and a child) : they sleep in the same bed. It already happened that a hotel either added an extra bed or unfolded a sofa bed. On other occasions we had a queen or a king size bed and it was not no problem. When we arrived at Montalay beach resort, we were given a small bungalow with a very nice view, accessible by a very long staircase and located on the other side of the road from the main building. But above all, in addition to the small size of the room, we had a 1m40 bed, which was a little tiny for a 4-night stay. In my opinion, it was a bungalow for a couple which should certainly not be proposed when making a reservation for 1 couple and 1 child. Even less at the price of 100 euros per night!!! It is a quite expensive price in France and even more for Thailand. Fortunately the reception staff kindly agreed to change our room (at no extra charge of course 😉). We moved to a much bigger bungalow, with a king size, closer to the sea, and a few steps from the restaurant. We really appreciated the way they solved the problem. Thanks to their efficiency and kindness we had an excellent stay: the buffet breakfast is perfect, the staff members are all nice and attentive, Tanote Bay is calm and perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving. Eventually, if you are not a scooter fan, there is a shuttle service at specific times which proposes return trips to the pier for 200 baths, which allows you to go to Koh Tao center.

We were happy with our initial welcome and check in. We were picked up from the pier free of charge for our initial journey, thereafter charged too and fro from the hotel which became expensive. The location of the hotel is on the opposite side of the island, the area being quite remote but having fantastic snorkeling opportunities.. We stayed for a full week but in reality around 3 or 4 days would suffice in the hotel. The staff were friendly but there was often miscommunication due to little spoken Thai or English. The food was average and the set breakfast menu was limited with only instant coffee. The staff promptly solved simple issues that arose in the room such as fixing the tv etc, but there was little to be done about the continually blocked toilet or the ants that we shared the bathroom with. The staff tried to make our stay special and made an effort to do so but in the end this was soured by a disagreement on the payment of a bill that we settled at the beginning of our stay but we were then billed for close to departure. Future visitors to this hotel would be wise to ensure that all bills are paid for through the main reception and that they request a receipt upon payment to avoid any pilfering that may or may not happen.

Their staff was very friendly and helpful, the restaurant served good food and the pool area is also very nice with a view to the beach. We had a villa, and it was really cool to live in a jungle-like environment with geckos, squirrels and other animals. Tanote Bay area is calm and relaxed and definitely worth a visit! Take your swimming shoes with you since the seabed has some rocks and bits of coral.

Firstly, Tanote Bay is stunning and perfect for snorkelling. The resort in my opinion is missing a golden opportunity to be something really special. We paid to upgrade our room but our upgrade was dirty and looked like it hadn't been occupied in years! I wasn't impressed by the next option either. I'm not overtly fussy but I do expect some basic standards. The bathroom wasn't clean with dead insects etc and a noisy dusty fan etc. I could have lived with that even for a night but the staff! With the exception of the bell boy who was a friendly lad, and the initial young lady on reception, the rest of the staff looked as if they were imprisoned at the hotel!! Blimey, they looked miserable and it made you feel miserable. It's not the impression you want to give to customers. Perhaps they thought that we didn't have money to spend? Wrong!! We are currently staying in a 5 star resort elsewhere on the island but like to take little trips elsewhere during our stay so they missed out there massively. I don't mind 'basic'clean honest accommodation but bad service...nothanks.

We arrived early and was given our key to a Eco cottage which we thought was lovely. Spent some time at the gorgeous bar Lai Beach and decided to stay another night and upgrade to another sea view room for the second night. We had a slight fall off our bike earlier in the day and asked if we could change room as the double bed was tiny and sharing would be a problem due to bruising - we paid the extra 400bht. My sister explained that she wasnt very well and had some breathing problems. The rude man on reception gave the bell boy the key for a seaview cottage. This cottage was so far away from the beach and in the treetops with no path, dirty and not far too many steeps. My sister's breathing was awful. We traipsed back down again to reception. I then explained we needed a room closer to the amenities. We were told only one available right next to the bins and carpark area. The room had twin beds and I was miffed as at least 4 other ones were empty. Gave up requesting anything as he was so rude ... Not one member of staff seemed to give a hoot... Miserable lot. Rough night sleep, mosquito bites, noisy fan, cochroch in shower room, dusty tissues.... cold pool.. I am not normally a person who complains ... The location is lovely and it would of been great.
