Amazing place close to nature and the ocean. We had such an wonderful week and after having spent 7 weeks in Thailand, at this place we had the most fun. Right outside was the most beautiful coral reefs here we saw many fish, shark and a turtle. We could also swim to a nice sandy beach very close by, and eat lunch at the restaurant by the sea front and have great snorkeling. We travelled with our 4 kids and they loved it very much. Kids also did a freediving course with the owner Dev, that was a wonderful experience for them.
The free yoga classes every morning had very high standard and was truly inspiring – the Shala is right by the ocean overlooking forest and the sea.
The ice bath organized by Baan Talay was really fun to – so happy we got to try that. Inspiering for both body and mind!
We slept in the tents and could fall alseep to the sounds of the tropical forest and wake up every morning to the ocean sound, very comfy beds and showers with hot and nice water.
Food has high class and moderate prices. Home baked bread and cakes that was absolutely delicious! The Baan Talay home made tea was fantastic. It was such a relief to come to a resort that did not have plastic straws and plastic bottles. The restaurant was on a big terrace overlooking the ocean – very Instagram friendly : )
We also did a scuba dive with Ban Talays diving center (New Haven) - an incredible experience and experienced staff. Our kids dove with Maggie - it felt completely safe at all stages and kids had so much fun with her.
Thank you Dev and staff for a wonderful week at Baan Talay with so many lovely experiences. We will really try to come back next year.

I've been meaning to visit Koh Tao for the last few years and the only place I wanted to stay in was at the Barn Talay resort. Safe to say that it truly did live up to all my expectations.

The place is wonderful and far away from the crowd and noise; the perfect place for the island getaway. The rooms are great, cleaned everyday and we had a wonderful outdoor bathroom in our hut.
The resort is built along a cliff and if you dare to walk down (because the climb back up is excruciating!!), you'll find a wonderful boardwalk leading you right into the ocean.
You can hire snorkelling gear free of charge and after renting bikes from town, we basically just explored the island and would come back to the resort for dinner and drinks.

The food is also quite good, especially their tuna melt sandwich and pad thai. But do not order the nachos. It came with a weird tip that was just quite ... well... bad.

The resort also has some lovely and friendly dogs and the yoga studio has an amazing view. I would love to come back here for a Yoga retreat. But if not, I am certain I'll stay here again during my next visit.

We had a great stay at Baan Talay. The property is located up a hill alongside ao luek. We stayed in one of the bungalows and the view from the balcony was amazing. The bungalow was recently renovated and spotless clean, with a great rain shower and firm bed (which we like and is typical in Thailand). The restaurant offers great and authentic Thai food at very reasonable prices (better food than most restaurants in Sai Ri). You will need to go up and down a few steps to reach the shore, there is no beach but a small access to the sea where you can snorkel with great corals and swim to the beach. We didn’t do yoga. The staff are very helpful and polite and provided great service from the beginning to the end of our stay/ The only reasons for 4 instead of 5 stars are that they could clean the junk from the ongoing construction a bit better, —- although this didn’t disturb us at all and is quite common in Thailand. Please be aware that this is a secluded resort about 10
min taxi from the city (400 thb one way), the whole point of coming here is to be out of the action. We definitely recommend this place and will come again.

Nice place... Sadly it is badly managed and neglected. My room was not cleaned in 5 days towels were old and torn as were the hammocks. The walkways to the rooms never got swept. It is very sad to see a place with such a great view and possibilities so badly managed. I had initially booked for 3 days... but decided to stay 4 more after switching to a room that was not musty and had a better view. To top off the lack of cleaning, the manager decided to charge me 15% more when I decided to stay on for a few days when I paid my final bill.

We stayed there for 2 nights 3 days and we wish we stayed there longer! We, parents stayed at a Sea View Bungalow and our 3 children (13, 9, 7) stayed at a tent closer to the ocean. The resort is situated on a hillside and have a gorgeous view from rooms as well as the restaurant. We had a good work out go up and down the property. (There is even an access to water but not exactly a beach). Food was great with reasonable price. But the best thing about there is that they have a professional gas ovens to bake yummy bread and cakes. They are better than most of the places in Bangkok! Yoga room is a free standing building and looking down ocean, so tranquil...I will definitely go back to take some yoga class next time!

You should definatly not go to this resort!

When you read the other reviews you already get a good idea about the resort. The view is really pretty but don't be fooled by the pictures. A lot of resorts on Koh Tao have beautiful views for reasonable prices, this is definitely not your best choice.

The huts are simple and small but clean. They are romanctic and the bathroom is very nice (only cold water). The whole small environmental resort image is a hoax though. I saw some of the girls throw plastic over the viewing deck. Devrim owns multiple places on Koh Tao and should nog pretend to be some small time resort owner that only cares about nature.

The free transfer from the pier is a big joke! We had contact with the owner Devrim the whole week and on the morning of our arrival. He gave us a number we should call on arrival and someone would pick us up. When we arrived we called 7 times nobody awnsers the phone so we had to take a taxi voor 400baht (10€). The next day we saw Devrim at the diveschool and asked why nobody picked up the phone. We would have been ok with an apology but that was never going to happen. The first thing he said was "that happens everyday, we are not here to serve you every minute of the day". He was at a party at which we said he shouldn't have promised it if he knew he was at a party, which he replied "thanks for telling me how to run my business". We were pretty much done at that point. To get a good idea about the owner read his replies to the negative reviews here.

The girls who work their are not from Thailand so they don't speak good english nor thai and can't help when there are any problems. Most of the time the reception is empty anyway.

Read the other reviews for the rest and make a good choice. I would never recommend this as there are a lot of better places to stay on Koh Tao!!!

This hotel could be good for some people, but it was not the right fit for us. My wife and I were excited to stay here and partake in the yoga and some diving. MAKE SURE YOU READ THE WEBSITE CAREFULLY! This resort is very remote and there are few shuttles throughout the day. The dive shop and yoga studio is a good 20 min.+ drive on treacherous road. The most frustrating part was that the shuttle didn't even line up with the one yoga class they had going on a day you have to take the shuttle and then wait a couple of hours for the class to start. Huge disappointment from the moment we arrived.

The Baan Talay was the second stop on Koh Tao during our stay and after seeing the steep path to the water, the boulders that you need to cross to access the water, the lack of yoga, and the effort required to get out of the resort, we decided to return to our previous resort after about 30 min... No problem, no hard feelings, right?

Wrong.

The real kicker was when we dealt with the owner/manager upon leaving. While we were ultimately able to get some of our deposit back, it required a lengthy and at times hostile conversation that didn't make anyone's day better. A great example of our interaction is the response written to RonanBzH from the owner here on TripAdvisor.

If you are seeking isolation and decent accommodations, this could be a good choice for you. More likely, you will see that this place is not as advertised. This could indeed one day be a decent resort, but there are plenty of other wonderful places to stay in Koh Tao. Don't get into a frustrating stay with this place.

Response from newheavendiveschool, Owner at Baan Talay Koh Tao
Responded 3 Aug 2013
So I had to respond to this review, I think this is a problem with making your decision from trip advisor. Any one can make a review, like this guy, who stayed at our place for only 30 minutes !!! To write such a negative review after staying in a place for only 30 minites in my opinion is not on. Just a few facts here to calarify some points from his review. Our resort is only 10 minutes away from the dive school/yoga, where this chap gets the 20+ minutes from is just Misinformation . We have daily yoga classes at our dive school and hold retreats at the resort. You will be able to find this information, if you read the website. There are free transfers to the diving and yoga from the resort. Like this reviewer states it is good to know what you want before choosing any location for your holidays. Our resort is for nature lovers, we have lt the island's nature intact you can see that if you read some reviews from our guest that actually stayed at the resort.!!

Our stay at Baan Talay was such a mess. As we arrived, I called them to pick us up as we have free pick up transfer. The driver was supposed to arrived in 15 min, he arrived after 45min. As we knew the place is a bit far and in the hills, we asked the driver if they have scooters to rent, he said yes. So we did not worried.
Arrived at the place, we asked about the scooter, and the lady told us that they do not have! So as they have free pick up to go to a town, we decided to go with them. He brought us to their own scuba diving town, where you have almost nothing and its far from Sairee beach and other easy town with facilities. Our Suprise : the driver asked for money for the transport! !! He said its not free.
As the staff was absolutely not that helpfull how to be usefull and reliable, and as we rent a scooter in Koh Samui and Phangan without passport, we were not able to rent any scooter without passport all around the island. We had to go back to Baan Talay.
More suprise ; all taxis drivers were asking 400-500THB to bring us to Baan Talay!
All of them! They were laughting that we were not agreed-
Furious about this, we called the hotel and asked them if they can help us.
They sent one driver. After some min drive, and after bringing some stuff to other places. he talked to us about the fee to go to Baan Talay, to pick up the passport and to bring us to the pier were we rent the scooter(which maked more sens!)
He asked for 600THB!!!!! In this situation, we cant do anything. So we had to do it.
I was so furious.!
Arrived at the Baan Talay, the lady was smiling at us like notthing happened!. I explain her our terrible arrival and her terrible organisation. The driver arrived, she explain why I was not happy, and he look at me so..BUT SO RUDELY! He told me : you know we agreed about the price.
Very rude people, and they seems to be from Myanmar. Very aggressiv in people the eyes, and they were so uncared about us!
They are just interested to sell very expensive activities, and about themselves.
In the night we had to change room because our aircon was not working. Thank you to the lady who woke up at night to make our room.
I tell you...it was a disaster our arrival. 4 hours waisted ! The Baan Talay hospitality and inteligence are ZERO + the terrible high expensuíve taxis.
If the staff could organised and advise they guest....that would be better.
The place is just good for the view and the eco room. Nothing else.
But to respond to your booking...they are at the top.
Dear Baan Talay, think about to train your staff, to know what your guest ned as you are in the jungle!
We did not recommend your place to our friends coming to Koh Tao.

Marie and Lilian from Mauritius and France.
We hope you remember us!

We stayed here for 7 nights - and wish we had only done one!

It's a cool place to experience but trust me, one night is plenty, it's in such a rubbish part of koh tao, there literally is nothing to do here!
They say you can walk a 5 minute down to your own private beach area - this is a lie, you go on a trek down, that is full of rubbish everywhere!! (This resort is supposed to be eco friendly) and there are no signs so you have to guess your way down, at the bottom there are 6 uncomfortable sun loungers, and then jaggedly very sharp rocks to clamber over to the sea, it's very difficult. Considering they have stairs the whole way except this bit which it really needs is pointless! The snorkelling is not the best here, we found other parts were far better and clearer!

The closest town that they offer a free taxi to is so run down, there is only a few overpriced shops, and a couple of not good restaurants. The free taxi is a nightmare, several days it was very late, or did not turn up at all, you have to share the back of it with a giant water tank and the driver goes over massive bumps in the road which will likely break coccyx at some point! The driver goes too fast and you can really tell he hates his job! We felt everyday that we were a massive inconvenience to him!

The food at the restaurant is not good, we ate here a few times then gave up and went to blue heaven up the road, it's much nicer but you pay a lot more.

The views here are incredible and the room is an experience, but not one I would do again, the geckos are a nightmare, they can get into the room and they poo all over everything, clothes, towels and bedding!!!! We came back one evening to so much poo over the bed we had to strip it, and sleep in nothing.!!! There was something in the bathroom that ate my flip flop also! We found that the next night it was a rat! A very large one that was eating everything! It also was coming in and urinating in the same place, so the room smelt horrible all the time! Very strong of ammonia!

We asked the staff to keep the bathroom door shut, but they did not so this became a big battle at night checking the room for a rat, then trying to ensure the door stayed closed all night!
The staff here are not friendly, there is one lovely girl, but the other two are very rude and unhelpful, none speak English, which is fine except when you are trying to sort out something important and they just laugh :(
The owner seemed nice at first but once he has your money he does not seem to care, we felt very isolated!

One last thing if your still considering this - BUILDING WORKS ALL DAY!!!!
The owner is building himself a bungalow on the site, so there is drilling, burning and smashing all day long! It's so loud it's impossible to hear yourself think! They have only just started so this is going to be at least another 6 months or so!

I wish we hadn't stayed here, if we weren't on a budget we would have left for sure, it's not eco friendly, it's not relaxing, and it's not a happy stay!
We would rather be in one of the other parts of the island and pay the same or even less!

Take my advice and either try one night, or avoid all together! Don't make the mistake of booking a week!

This place has the potential to be so good, but I think it needs a lot more work before that happens!

I wish I had known what this place was REALLY like before booking! Lesson learnt the hard way :(

I stayed at baan talay for 3 nights with my boyfriend. They said there was a free transfer from the pier to the resort and I sent several emails to update on the correrct time of arrival but still no one was there and we had to call and wait half An hour.
We really liked the Place, the room and the restaurant and, apart from the first transfer experience it was all going Well.

Unfortunately the Place is really hard to reach and we agreed with the taxi driver from the hotel to Take us to mae haad and pick us up at 11,30pm. We agreed to par 500 baht and he asked to be payed in advance, Since he was from the hotel we trusted him and payed. Also i asked for his Phone numeber and to check by hinself if i got it right. We agreed a Place to meet at 11,30 and left.
We arrived at 11.20 at the meeting Point and waited half An hour but he didn ' t show up; we tried to call him but his numeber was wrong and not existing. In The end we had to take An Other taxi for Other 450 baht.

In The morning we told everything to the reception but They didn ' t want to help us. We talked politely to the taxi driver and asked why he didn ' t show up and if he could give us back at least half of what we payed him . He started laughing and saying that he expected our call to pick us up, Even if he decided the meeting Point, he asked to be payed for both ways and then gave the wrong number on purpose.
He then said that we payed only 400 baht and threw at us 100 baht.
Of course it wasn 't a Matter of money but this taxi driver was a lier and a thief and also Very unpolite.

It was a pity to be treated this Way also beacuse the People from the hotel remained there to listen but didn ' t Say Any thing. We really enjoyed the Place and the atmosphere (we probably would have rated 4 or 5) but unforunately this experience ruined it all.

Heckled we do not rent motor bikes but there are many places on the island where you can rent. We can bring you too a rental shop. The cost is around 200 baht per day. We have free parking space, please note that our resort is on the Hillside so you will need to be a good motorbike driver to access the resort
