After being 6 months in Bangkok with my best friend, we took this one-week trip to Koh Tao. As students we didn't had that much money left for this vacation so we booked View Rock Resort: looked good and remoted, and after several luxurious hotels we've been before, this was exactly what we were looking for. When we arrived (after a very bumpy but extremely fun ride in the back of the owner's truck) our baggage was carried by the staff all the way down the rocks! After a chat with the very friendly owners of view rock resort, we entered our cabin, and it looked so romantic with the white musquito net and cute pillows (too bad I didn't bring my boyfriend here). However at night there might be some ants coming trough the wooden floor but hey isn't that adventure? Also we had a couple of visits by a lizzard and a squirrel but they won't harm you. Everything looks clean and comfy and did I mention the view from your cabin?? It's magnificent!! When the sun goes down, we noticed there are thousands of glowing plankton particles lighting up in the dark ocean, very spectacular and again, romantic.
At day you can enjoy breakfast, some drinks, and the sun. Don't expect very good food though, and be sure to bring something to do (the resort has it's own library which is nice) It's good to be there for like 3 days but If you tend to stay longer like we did, this resort might be too boring for such a long time. You will miss the beach that isn't there, and the people around you. If you're lucky, there might be 4 others checked in at the most. Unless you like loneliness..
We stayed at the resort for the whole week, but after going to the other (busy) side of the island the last day with some guys we met, we regretted the fact that we didn't pick a resort at the other side of the island for the last 3 days, where it was more crowded, the food was great (even on the crowded side of the island there are quiet beaches!!) and the sea was more approachable. (My foot was cut open while climbing the stairs to get out of the sea the second day at the resort, imaging climbing up and down all these steep rocks with one bad foot. the staff took good care cleaning the wound, but they didn't had anything to stitch it and now one year later you can still see the scar)
I would recommend staying there for 2 days, and then head off to the other side of the island for some fun (sairee beach). Also, the beach at where the boats are arriving (Mae Haad!) is a very very nice and quiet beach, and you won't get bothered by the longtail boats as you would expect.

View Rock Resort is perfect for you if: you are backpacking, like adventure, like being very very remoted, are romantic, care for nice friendly staff, are staying there for 2-3 days at the most, like great snorkling or diving, cold showers and pet friends coming into your cabin.
You should avoid View Rock Resort if: you're bad at foot, have children with you, enjoy good food and wines, you plan to stay more than 3 days, you like crowded areas, appreciate a beach, get bored really quick, don't like insects.

My third stay at View Rock, and I'd never stay anywhere else on Ko Tao. Owners still in good control of the whole place, and the service is excellent. Room and bathroom were spotless, and the owners can't really do anything about the humid hot weather. Electricity only at night, which I think was a step down from last time I stayed there 2 years ago. On the other hand, there's no noisy generator. Swings and roundabouts. Fewer boats anchored in the bay also.

Far from the maddening crowd View Rock Resort in Hin Wong Bay is an awesome place if you love quiet and great snorkelling. Step of the rocks and straight into Nemo's world with an amazing variety of fish and some of the best corals remaining on Koh Tao. While View Rock is set on a very steep and somewhat challenging hill the reason we have been here 5 times is the access to the best snorkelling on the island. Getting in touch with View Rock can be a challenge but persist and Nao can meet you at ferry, but if all fails just go there by taxi. Paddle across the bay to the protected area (no boats) on the south point for a great view and some easy snorkelling or just swim slowly around the bay. Mols Bar next door is a great place for a drink and if you feel the need for sand.

We booked this place in a bit of a rush as could not find anywhere else on Ko Tao.
Well, when we arrived we thought we had made a massive mistake.
The place is very tired and worn down and we had to ask to change rooms.
However, once we settled in, the place did grow on us.
The snorkeling is truely incredible! I dont think it will ever be beaten in my lifetime!
The location again is brilliant, The whole resort is built into the rock face on the hill with stunning views of the quiet bay.
Unfortunately for us, the quality of the place just was not good enough to call a holiday.
If you have time, definitely give this place a night, maybe two. But I dont think you would want much more unless you want to snorkel for a week!
Also, there is NO beach and the resort really is in the middle of nowhere.
Also, there is only electricity from 6pm - 6am so expect a nice wake up call when your air con / fan stops working :(

We came here to enjoy nature and calm but were sorely disappointed. Each day, the restaurant caters to tons of day trippers from Samui who come here by speed boats to stop here for lunch. Of course, this is an incredibly good source of income for the owners but it destroyed the atmosphere in the restaurant and in the bay just in front of the "resort" as the place gets overcrowded and often people block the ladder to the water so that you can't comfortably access the bay if you feel like going snorkeling. One day, the owner proudly told us that he had 80 guests for lunch.
Apart from this, the food in the restaurant - "Thai" dishes cooked by their Burmese staff (like almost everywhere on Ko Tao) - tastes horribly bland.

We stayed for 2 days as my wife came to hin Wong bungalows 20 years ago . We stayed in room 102 for 700 baht - clean room with a mosquito net- there were great views. The room wasn't too far from restaurant and steps to go snorkeling. My 11 year son loved it. Lots of snorkeling to do, rocks to jump off. The restaurant is good and people are friendly. You pay when you check out. You can take a 4x4 for 100 baht from Mae Had pier -
I'd probably go back - koh nang yuan was a big disappointment this year.

We knew there was no beach, that this place would be remote and simple, but we didn't expect quite so many fish! Each day a HUGE shoal of thousands of fish came into the bay and were a joy to see! As soon as you enter the water from the rocks or pontoon, you are surrounded by fish; not so many corals but lots of fish. We had the large family bungalow apartment which had a huge veranda (you could take a mattress out there and sleep out in the open under a mozzie net). Great view too. Very simple accommodation but ok. Friendly staff. Exciting journey in from the ferry port (which has a horrible, busy town with no character at all) along a very steep road. But the driver was very careful (unlike some of the tourists on motorbikes we saw) and we felt very safe. Food ok. Peace and quiet was great. Only downside was the daily tour groups arriving for a set lunch which disturbed the peace for a couple of hours and then left again.

VIEW ROCK RESORT is on ao hing bay, north east side of ko tao.
owner, nao (f) meets the boats, and drives to the "resort" in their 4WD, a TERRIBLE road, 3km, 20 minutes.

resort is on the rocks, (the view is of the bay, not the rocks!) no beach, ladders down to lovely clear water with fish and coral right under the jetty.

simple cabins, 300/500/800 baht, reduced for long stay. there's even one cabin right on the waterfront (share shower) for 100bt ! the others are up innumerable steps, all have water views and balcony and bathroom. view over the bay is stupendous, but fishing boats sometimes park (noisily) at night.

snorkel, scuba, rent kayak, er, that's it. must stress, very quiet place. internet access 2bt/min (usual island rate)

food good and reasonably priced.
dive master (norwegian) in residence

A great location for snorkeling, but many stairs. The bungalow I was given had a great view, but no electricity until 6 p.m. which means the rooms are hot with no fan.The staff who met me in town couldn't provide locked storage in the truck for my backpack which I had been carrying around since the ferry arrived at 6:00 a.m. The truck arrived at 9:00 a.m., but I had to wait until 10:30 a.m. so they could get more people. Fortunately I decided to not leave my backpack on the roof of the truck. I was pleased with the bungalow - even though it had a shared porch and wasn't quiet - for 600 bht. It was clean and with an amazing view, but the stairs were treacherous. When I went to go snorkeling, the same staff member wasn't willing to keep my shorts in the office area and said to leave them at the snorkeling sight. They didn't have much - my prescription glasses, the room key, and 50 bht. When I returned from snorkeling, they were stolen. I negotiated for a free stay, but was disappointed how they responded. The owner kept saying how nothing had been stolen in the past. I kept saying how they should provide safe storage for guests. The staff member refused to talk to me. The food in the restaurant was good, but I didn't feel respected. No one offered an apology, thus a lesson learned. Great view, good food, and bad attitude!

We arrived off the boat and immediately had people offering taxis' etc. We were then offered 500 baht for one night, we were shown pictures and said yes!
This resort has its own bay, to swim, snorkel, kayak and relax! Incredible snorkel spots that you pay 1500 baht to go on a boat to, we just kayak to from the resort.
The staff are very helpful and very friendly.
The rooms have beautiful views to watch the sun set, very clean and comfortable.
A must do in Thailand!
