After a bumpy road we reached lions bluff and we were surprised by how remote it is. When you’re there you are a guest in Tsavo, by which I mean: animals have access to the surroundings. During the day you can mind your own business and at night you are guided by Masai who escort you to your lodge: great service. Because of steps, stairs and an uneven pavement, the staff carries your suitcase to the lodge: please pack light ;) Diner was great, the friendly staff tries to make everybody smile! Safari’s were great as well, great sightseeing with experienced guides. Oh, at night they put a hot water flask in your bed (September is what locals call winter hehe)... 10/10 and I recommend!!
To get there we drive up and up as Lions Bluff Lodge is situated high on a ridge. It is a small Lodge with XXL extra spectacular view across Lumo Community Wildlife Sanctuary to Mt Kilimanjaro. At noon as we get there my thermometre shows 33.5 C. Our cottage or rather our nest because it clings to the hill as many nests do, is No 1 and you must conquer 55 steps down to get there. The room is relatively big with a king size bed with a mosquito net, a desk and a luggage rack. The bathroom is primitive and not too clean, shower, washbasin and toilet are all cramped together. Electricity is on nonstop, wi-fi at the reception only. Public toilet near the reception is terrible. The food served at the Lodge is at best mediocre lacking variety and rather surprisingly also fruits. After dinner we are escorted to our room where mosquito net is rolled down and the mosquito repellent was used there too. We sit out on our balcony with the outstanding view and watch lights of the vehicles doing night game drives. The morning view is fantastic too because we wake up above the clouds, yes they are below us. Despite all its shortcomings we agree Lions Buff is an extraordinary place well worth staying at. …
Recently i went with my mum, I absolutely loved Lions bluff (which is technically not in Tsavo West, but in Lumo conservancy). It has the most amazing views to Tsavo W and the grand Lady it self (mt Kilimanjaro). We did a self drive with local guides, which was a bliss with them. The camp is not overly luxury but has a good mix of attention: decent tents, warm water bottle in bed, good food and did i mention the views? 🙂 After that we went to Severin. If you come from Lions Bluff through Maktau Gate, please check with the KWS rangers if the Severin Bridge is accessible as it washed away last rains in Oct/Nov. If that has not been repaired yet (i would not be surprised...) make sure you know where Rhodesia Bridge is (only 5 km to the east of severin bridge) and what route to follow as it is a bit of a detour, but drivable. The other option is to go Voi, use Mombasa Road (🤮) to Mtito Andei Gate and the main roue to all the camps.…
Great stay! It met ... no, it exceeded …. expectations. Fabulous ride up to the lodge and views were outstanding. The rooms in this eco lodge are fine - all you need, made more than 5* by the fact you look out over a stunning escarpment. Food was fine, though limited on the veggie side (as others have said). But just keep in mind, you are in the middle of nowhere, you're in an awesome setting - best focus on what's wonderful about this gem of a place. Looking forward to a return visit.
The main reason to stay in Lion's Bluff is the incredible setting on a rocky outcrop in the the Lumo conservancy - from your room or the bar or breakfast you can look at the plains and often see animals. It is really good value for money for full board and a great option in the dry season if you are going to Tsavo West ( it is 1.5 hrs away from Tsavo East). The food is fine but not very exciting if you are a vegetarian and the rooms definitely need a bit more light as they get dark and are not very user friendly at night. But the staff are lovely, bathrooms are nice and there are some lovely touches, like hot water bottles in the beds at night - which are definitely needed as it gets cold! Great - budget safari option.
