Nafis makes this place really special! It's neither an ordinary B&B or Hostel nor it feels like a Hotel kind of thing. Its facilities are clean and basic and it's cosy. Cooking classes should be mandatory, just do it! Hotel arranges budget trips around sandakan as well. I'll be back Sea View!

During my stay in Sabah, I spent the most time in Sandakan. This is due to the nice, warm-hearted, helpfull owner of the hostel. There won't be a second hostel-mum which is so hospitable and so touching character as hers. She always was keen to help, keen to consult about trips and open-minded for new ideas, thinkings and behavious. Simply a real Globetrotter! I really enjoyed my stay in this hostel. The price is cheap and rooms are clean, however the rooms are simple, which doesnt matter, because in this area are so many places to explore. But still, the price-performance ratio is really good. During my stay, they started with an renovation of the rooms. And what I have seen looked really good. However, the lobby and the cafe with a nice sea-view been already cozy and a good spot to hangout and meet other backpackers. In general, this hostel been a really good spot to meet new people, organize a new trip, trying some new food.

Thank you for the nice time there, and hope the hostel runs well Nabistul. I really hope I can visit your family there again!

Greetings from Munich :)

Stayed in this hostel a month or two ago - after staying for one night booked another one immediately. The food was the highlight, with Nabastul's lemongrass, coconut and pumpkin curry being the best thing we ate on our trip. Good vibes all round!

Allright, so i booked this hostel based on All the reviews on tripadvisor which seemed pretty good.
And it was all good, until we got to our twin bed Room..
First thing we noticed was that the cleaning Lady only changed the beds, there was hair all over the floor and while we heard nothing about sharing the room, a cockroach was already sleeping in one of our beds.
The room itself looked like IT was built 30 years ago and had not been maintained ever since.
The matrasses on the bed were worn out and when laying down you could count every plank poking in your Body.
We had a room with AC, which apparantly was powered by An enormous diesel generator judging by the Sound IT made.
The Bathrooms were pretty much the same, outdated and Gross.

The only upside and reason why this Review is 2 stars and not 1 is that the personel is friendly, and the People in the dorms seem pretty Happy so that might Be allright, although i can't judge about it.

Staff are friendly - though the owner can be a bit pushy with her tours. Wifi was up and down. TV didn't really have any reception.

We had a private ensuite room and it was really disappointing - mostly because it was filthy. The drainage grill in the bathroom was full of hairs, there were 2 used (and I mean very used) soaps on the side, the toilet was still stained from where the last person had used it; and around, above and below the bed were heavy cobwebs. The aircon was thick with grime. There is no top sheet on the bed to sleep under, only an old smelly blanket that needs incinerating. I'd love to know the last time that was washed.
Generally as you walk around the place it feels quite dirty, apart from in the restaurant which is the only part that feels clean. Because of this we did have the included breakfast (we weren't going to given the filth everywhere else) - a very tasty pancake with syrup though it's a bit measly to only serve one. Better off either not serving a free breakfast or sticking an extra one in, it probably only costs them about 5 sen to make.
We left after one night and moved 3 doors down the road to the Marine Bay - exactly the same price (though admittedly no breakfast) for a modern, super clean room with kettle, coffee, drinking water and fresh, unused toiletries replaced every day. If you are looking for a dorm I can understand why you'd pick the Sea View but when it comes to a private room it needs to up its game.. and invest in some bleach.

Our Valued Guests, It was rather unfortunate that you both did not enjoy your stay at Sea View Hostel. We thank you for the feedback and we have acted accordingly. . We had a small problem with our contract cleaners and we have now found a new company to undertake the contract. If you had come to us and reported your problems, we could have rectified the problems and possibly compensated you with an upgrade. Again I apologise that you were not one hundred percent satisfied with your stay at Seaview. All the best on your future travels, Nabistul

We chose the Seaview Hotel based on the tripadvisor recommendations, but we couldn't understand the good ratings. We stayed at the Sea View Hotel for one night in a twin room with shared bathroom and it was the worst that we had in Malaysia. We were friendly welcomed with fried banana and tea, and the lady gave us useful information for trips in the surrounding area. But the room floor was dirty, with not even a dustbin in it. The matrasses and the whole room smelled mouldy and like cold cigarette fume. My bed sheet had undefinable stains so we ended up sleeping in our own sleeping bags. The shared bathroom was obviously not checked regularly because there was toilet paper was not refilled and everything was scruffy. We would not recommend to stay there.

This hostel could have been a bright point of light in the ill-scented and unfriendly city that is Sandakan; instead, we were faced with staff members who seemed puzzled by everything we asked them and who so persistently gave us indecipherable answers to simple questions that we just gave up. Attempting even basic communication after eleven in the evening is a lost cause as after that time a person whose entire english vocabulary consisted of "no" and "english" sits smoking a cigarette behind the reception desk.

Sandakan is a city best viewed in the rearview mirror; this hotel suits it perfectly. If you're worried about kidnappings, at least take solace in the fact that if you're kidnapped you'll be taken somewhere the hell else.

Perhaps I had too high expectations from the other reviews, but the problems started the moment I got there. After a long journey I was looking forward to a nice hot shower, but the water wasn't working. The receptionist kept having to run downstairs to reset something. Then I didn't appreciate being bombarded by the owner who was trying to cram her tours down my throat. Over my stay that evening I noticed what seemed to be a lingering odour of a dead rat, my stay here culminated the next morning when I noticed my bed was infested and I had bites all over my body. I moved out immediately and found a nice, clean hostel just around the corner on the main street before one gets to this horrid place. You've been warned.

Sandakan is quaint and has some really fabulous wildlife sanctuaries within 15 to 30 minutes of the town center. We loved our experiences with Orangutans at Sepilok and the Proboscus and stunning Silver Leaf monkeys at Labuk, so much so we went back again during our brief 4 night stay.
However, the Seaview Sandakan budget and backpackers would not rate a minus 2 star in Australia. The best thing was the room had air conditioning and it did work well. We had a 4 bunk family room which was about 2.7m wide and about 6m long. There was one, yes 1 sheet over each mattress and a pillow per bunk. That is it. The doors had an extemely inadequate locking system.
The bathroom, hmm and that term is used in a tongue in cheek manner, were quite an experience.
The toilet paper was eeked out almost by the sheet. We had to ask for a roll on several ocassions and as I say we had a 4 night stay. The toilet had a shower head over it so all ablutions were confined to a 1m square. Out of the 4 unisex toilet/showers that had only a light shower curtain for privacy of which only one had a hot water gas instantaneous contraption. On most sojourns to the loo we were able to have accompanying wildlife with 6 legs. These tropical cockroaches are also quite large. Now, as we are from Queensland this is not too big of a shock however for the British or Europeans this may be quite confronting.
The town is also inclined to be very smelly from road fumes. Cats by the waterfront areas are deft at catching their rat meals. Have to say that bit was not too perturbing as strays are everywhere in Malaysia.
The lady owner of the SEA VIEW SANDAKAN is a charming welcoming and helpful host who seems to live on the premises where she keeps an eye on her staff and guests. She will arrange a driver or taxi to the various points of interest or to the airport.
Actually we would come again to see and support the conservation projects including the turtles, we however would NOT under any circumstances return to the Sea View. There are many low cost hotels or hostels within the vicinity that are of a far better standard.

After reading alle the good reviews I must admit I was quite dissappointed. I booked an Ensuite room with a bed that was broken, the bathroom door could nok close, bathroom was dirty and all in all the room was not that nice compared to the price. Other than that the breakfast was just pancakes with syrup so it was not a solid meal. And one more quite fun thing is that it has nothing to do with any seaview since what you look at from their restaurant is a market/mall.
For backpackers that needs 1-2 nights it is ok but this is not really for the more comrfortable travellers.
