I arrived here based on other reviews on Tripadvisor. I can assure that the place is as cool as it looks. Plus points: Very clean, beautiful place, very practical room layout, very fast internet (streamed HD football match on Astro on the Go), easy access, easy parking. Minus points: No remote for air conditioning in the room (it was freezing at 16* and high speed fan), no buffet breakfast, hate the pillows, no Astro (only RTM1, RTM2 and TV3). Considering all this, Me thinks it's a superb bargain for the rate per night.

The staffs at this hotel give it an extra star in my rating.

Staying there for 3 nights for a family event during Aug 2014.

Pros: Their staffs are polite and helpful. We stayed at rooms on 1st floor where there is no lift and the staffs responded fast and helped us to carry our luggages up and down while check in/check out. Their efficiency was also shown in the setting up of the extra bed upon request.

It happened that my father lost his wallet one day while going out. And luckily he found it few hours later on the table in the hotel room when got back, probably he had dropped the wallet on the floor and it was found and placed back by the housekeeping staffs. Nothing was missing and the money and cards were clearly untouched.

The rooms are clean and spacious. Parking spaces are available for guests with cars. Wifi was ok and the hotel has a pool, cafe and restaurant.

Cons: Not a good location for guests who dont have own transport. No shopping complex , eatery and market within walking distance. About 15 min away from airport by car.

Their breakfast is so so, with really limited choice. Anyway, guest can opt for room rate that comes without breakfast. But again, looking for breakfast without own transport could be a trouble.

Dear Win555, First of all, let me express my thanks to you and your family for staying at Borneo Cove Hotel. I am Very note that you found our staff honestn polite and helpful. We have often stressed on doing our best for our guests. As for lifts, we have not installed any since our hotel has only ground floor and first floor rooms. Perhaps guests with elderly members in there group could alert us when booking rooms with us so that we would place them in ground floor rooms if possible. As for guest without their own transport, we would gladly assist in arranging a taxi for them or link them with a local tour company for sight-seeing excursions. Once again, Thank you for your patronage, and we hope that we will have the opportunity to serve you and your family again in the near future. Sincerely, General Manager.

You definitely need your own transport if staying here, because it is about 4 kilometres out of the centre of town on a main road surrounded by nothing of interest, not even restaurants.
Good, cheap seafood restaurants floating over the water can be found about 1.5 kilometres back towards town (walk in along pedestrian piers off the main road).

We booked a Queen room and then changed to a Twin room when we saw that the Twin rooms (which we had also booked for our teenage sons) were much wider and better quality mattresses - I'm not too fussy about mattresses but in this case there is a huge difference so I'd recommend you book a Twin room.

The hotel is adjacent to a hospitality institute and has a lot of keen, young, inexperienced but eager to please student staff. The hotel itself is a weird design - sprawling, oversized property, many buildings but a surprisngly small and inadequate pool. It is a muslim hotel (like the whole area) and doesn't serve alcohol, but its restaurant is good and well-run. Breakfasts are ok but not great (like most of Malaysia, outside of KL).

This hotel just seems to be in a poor location overall and I'd recommend staying elsewhere purely for this reason.

Dear Carperdiem, Thank you for choosing Borneo Cove Hotel. Your review on our hotel is duly noted. You are right in saying that our Superior Twin room are bigger than our Standard Queen room. For couples who wish to have a more spacious room, we recommended either the Superior Queen rooms or the Superior Twin rooms. As you mentioned, Borneo Cove Hotel is about 4km to the town center. Since last month, we have started a shuttle service to town that departs from the hotel at 10am. Alternatively, guests can take a bus or taxi to town. Yes we do have a fair number of hospitality students undergoing their practical training at our hotel. As your stay was in January, they would be the new intake of students who commenced their studies at the beginning of the year. Once again thank you for staying with us and we hope we will have the opportunity of serving you and your family again. Best Wishes, GM

The Borneo Cove Hotel was a welcome retreat after out long flight. The rooms were air conditioned, super clean and spacious. Staff were friendly and happy to help.
The Hotel itself is a bit from centre of town, but there is a shuttle bus in the morning or a taxi costs ¢10-15 Malaysian Dollars.

This is a great new hotel. Our room was spacious and had a fantastic "rainforest" style shower in the bathroom. The food in the restaraunt is terrific (try the Saturday night buffet) and is clearly a popular choice with locals. You can see your food being prepared as only glass separates the kitchen from the restaraunt. The entire hotel is very clean. The staff went out of their way to be friendly and on the whole it was excellent value for money. You can tell that it is well managed as the staff seem very happy and everything runs so efficiently.

The only downside is the location - it is about 5km out of the centre of Sandakan. The hotel perhaps ought to start a shuttle service as they have a minibus - this is perhaps something they will do when it is finished and it starts to get busier.

I will start with the only positives - the staff were lovely and we had a TV . But its downhill from there...

The location leaves a lot to be desired. Nestled in a district of unfinished flats the area attracts the sort of people that you would cross the street to avoid. As you enter the hotel, you are greeted by decor that is almost offensive to the eye- not at all similar to the photos on website.

There are no hallways, brought to your room on street level. ( very dirty street with all the electrics on view) The same story continues in the room; there hasn't even been an attempt to clean it. The floors and surfaces are coated in dust and hair as well as a whole host of stains that I will not describe in detail in fear of putting you off your food. Some of the bed-sheets had been washed; but all still had hairs and stains on them. Our room had One door which did not seemed secure.

We had booked 2 rooms as four of us travelling . One of rooms had only one bug (which was in the bathroom when we arrived) and bed bugs but other room u did have cockroaches and a toilet that wouldn't flush. The bathroom was covered in body hairs, and in one room, the sink wouldn't drain at all. There was no shower curtain, and the shower was very inconsistant in terms of heat.

Intermittent wifi , broken air con .

The room did have a safe - and it really needs one. We had to ask to get it opened and 5 members of staff came. ( as said before the staff were lovely) The TV had a remote control that wouldn't work.

The breakfast was bread, cold beans and cold hash browns and some type of soup. I didn't try it.

Seriously, do not stay here!!

And before you ask yourself, "can it really be that bad?" Trust me, yes it can.

We stayed at this place and absolutely loved it!! The room and bathroom were beautiful - spacious and clean. The hotel has a laundry, restaurant, cafe, pool etc. Wi fi was working ok and all the staff were lovely and very helpful. I don't understand complaints in some previous reviews, we were with a group of 19 and all loved our stay. The breakfast and the dinner was delicious. We definitely recommend this for a pleasant stay. Thank you Borneo Cove Hotel. We all very much appreciated our stay.

I used a taxi too, and from memory it was about $12 one way. May be cheaper if you go to centre of Sandakan (yes further from the airport) and ask several drivers there for competition.
