Hotel is a lovely old building , built in the colonial style. It is not close to anywhere for walking out to ( though you wouldn’t want to go to Sandakan which is a bit of a dump) so you have to rely on services within the hotel for all your needs.
Rooms are spacious. Bathroom is very modern with fabulous shower but rest of bedroom could do with updating. It is however kept very clean with regular exchange of bedding.
Facilities in the hotel include a large free form pool with slide and a children’s pool, also with small slide. There is table tennis, a fully equipped gym, steam room and sauna, though they weren’t operating whilst we’ve been here. We have had a good aromatherapy massage, reasonably priced at about £27 for 60 mins.
Staff are all very pleasant and helpful
Where the hotel falls down is on the food.
The first night we ate in the on site Chinese restaurant. It’s the only restaurant in the hotel that serves alcohol. My wife and I both ordered. My meal arrived and they then told my wife they couldn’t supply her choice. Would she like something else?
She had half eaten some spring rolls which were cold and greasy and my dinner was inedible so we decided to leave and get a snack in the bar.
Next night we had a bar snack. Not brilliant but edible at least. ( The lady that runs the bar works very hard and is extremely helpful and pleasant. )
Tonight we ate in the hotel restaurant ( No alcohol served). Again my meal was inedible. I couldn’t cut through the steak it was so tough so I ended up having half my wife’s Burger which was just Ok.
Because there is no where else you can get food the hotel needs to greatly improve its standards in this respect. Dining is part of the holiday, particularly for us with a nice glass of wine or a beer. If we had known it was No alcohol in the dining room we would have booked elsewhere. As it is we are looking forward to moving on on Friday

After a very long journey we checked in for a relaxing stay before our Borneo tour. Staff were lovely, friendly and helpful and we were taken to our room immediately. The room was enormous with a very big comfortable bed. Air con worked well. Bathroom was also very large with a decent shower; shower gel and shampoo were included. Everything was very clean.
We spent the afternoon by the pool. Pool is beautiful and very warm. Pool towels were provided.
Good selection of drinks at the bar, cold tea Tarek and the chocolate drink were delicious. There was an excellent offer on pie/cake and drink but we were having dinner in the evening so unable to take advantage of this. Dinner was very good and reasonably priced.
Very much enjoyed our first night in Borneo at the Sabah Hotel.

This hotel was clean, the beds were comfortable. The pool was nice and plenty of sunbeds and seats around.
Most of the staff were friendly and helpful. The waiting staff and one young lady on reception were very good.
The hotel kindly let us into our rooms 2 hours early, after we arrived from a trip to the Kinabatangan River.
Few points though which are disappointing and need improving.
The breakfast is served 7-10, we arrived at 0830 to find most of the hot food containers were empty, no one keeping an eye on them. We pointed this out and they were then replenished a while later.
We wanted to refill our water bottles, but were given the run around, eventually the lady in the restaurant took it away and filled it, (grumpily) but it was very warm and we don't know where she filled it. The reception lady kindly then refilled it somewhere.
The fridge in our room didn't work, so had to be reported. It was changed promptly.
The aircon in our room leaked water down the walls, assume the drain was blocked. We reported it but didn't change rooms.
I'm not keen on carpet in rooms, always prefer the hygiene of hard floors.
The luggage took over half hour to get upstairs from the bellhop, and only arrived after we phoned. It really wasn't busy either.

The facilities and staff were of very bad quality.
No sauna and steam room as advertised, they were always switched off.
Resturants were holding a private evening event which you had to book for in advance, they were so concerned about the event there was no service throughout the day. Lunch took over 90 minutes and most of the time I'd order only to be told 30 minutes later that they didn't have it.
Breakfast options were limited and sparse, I arrive at breakfast a good 45 minutes before it ended to only find scraps and no-one at the omelette station.
No access to water refills - for such a big hotel in an area that should pride in being sustainable you couldn't refill water. The restaurant staff had to fill it for you and the water was boiled water, so given to us hot and it tasted of chlorine. To buy fresh water was £3 for 250ml.
Walk around the hotel closed off due to rainy season. We are no longer in this season.
I asked to speak to the manager and he refused to meet with me
Special menus printed for lunch, but none of the offers were active
Private balcony attached to room, but no cushions provided to sit outside
Lift wasn't working
General staff vibe was that we were an inconvience and they were often grouped together and laughing and tourists

We arrived at the Sabah Hotel the day the city had locked down for COVID19, including the hotel.
The staff honoured the booking for our group and allowed us to stay until our rearranged flights or scheduled flights. We had limits applied, room with meals delivered, no other hotel facilities or services.
Thank you to all the staff we had (minimal) contact with, all were very polite and empathetic to our dilemma.

Sandakan is a very pleasant and lively authentic town. It is better to stay there than in SEPILOK which is a tourists ghetto where the lodges are often old and where prices are higher. In SANDAKAN and around, SABAH hotel is definitively the best choice. Immersed in greenery at the top of the small town, it's an old colonial residence which has been renovated and expanded into a luxury hotel. Yet the prices remain reasonables. The excellent general manager is very present throughout the day and ensures that hotel runs smoothly. All the employers do an excellent job. This makes the stay very pleasant and quiet. My room was comfortable, large and well appointed. Everything was very clean. The large swimming pool is perfect for relaxing after longs days to visit attractive touristic spots. There is also a nice gym with a coach. The restaurant serves a varied buffet breakfast, western and local, with good, well-prepared products. The food serves for the dinner is also of good quality. Don't miss the special dinner every saturday, a large number of specialties are offered as a big buffet and even a BBQ is organised around the swimming pool. Booking in advance is necessary. This hotel is an excellent and comfortable base to rest and for visiting the many tourist spots around Sandakan.

We had a non-smoking room that smelt of stale smoke. There was ducted A/C, a fridge, WiFi, comfy king size bed, safe & TV with cable channels. Big bathroom that even had a bath. Shower didn't have great water pressure, but it was ok. Nice pool but full of kids. Very much a family hotel. They were doing a lamb spit roast buffet dinner in the restaurant for dinner which looked good, but we didn't eat there. I think it was a special Xmas thing though. I'm not sure if they do it all the time? The onsite Chinese restaurant had terrible dim sum. I don't recommend that one. Breakfast was included at this hotel but it was the worst food I had in all of Malaysia. Staff weren't particularly helpful & be prepared for every porter to push hos mate's taxi service on you

Lovely setting but needs refresh and good clean.

I stayed in the cheaper Borneo Room which was very tired. Mini fridge didn’t work and AC was very old and noisy. Room was not very private and faced onto Herb Harden which looked lovely but people sat out there smoking which wasn’t very pleasant.

Great pool area with fun slide.

Breakfast was good with wide selection. An indoor air conditioned area available as well as outdoor area to eat to cater to everyone. The Chinese restaurant was great with excellent service and food.

Is a little way out of town - but had lovely jungle ambiance - unfortunately that also included mosquitos and sandflies. I would stay closer to town if I were to go again for the convenience and to be near the seafront.

Grab to orangutan sanctuary took 30min and wasn’t expensive.

Staff were very friendly, helpful and accommodating- especially the young female receptionist.

This hotel is fantastic and we had a really enjoyable stay. We stayed here as part of a group tour. The room was comfortable with clean and soft linen. We liked that they had a safe and tea and coffee making facilities as well as a small fridge. The hotel was nice and quiet and we slept really well here. The hotel has a decent swimming pool and nice, modern loungers and outdoor seating. It all felt so nice and clean. Breakfast was included and there were lots of options. The staff were really friendly and helpful. I liked that there was a small gym which had good equipment. The hotel has a very good Chinese restaurant where we had dim sum which was fantastic value and at the hotel bar we had a few cocktails which were pretty decent and not too overpriced. The beer however was very overpriced. A really nice hotel to relax, especially after a day of sightseeing. We would recommend.

We spent an overnight stay at the Sabah Hotel. The hotel is very comfortable. There is a welcoming pool area. The rooms were well appointed and clean. It was easy to get from the airport to the hotel. We ate dinner in the Chinese Restaurant on site and the meal was reasonably price and tasty. Breakfast was included.

Amazingly enough, we didn’t see one mosquito. All the insect repellent went unused, even at the rainforest lodge in the jungle! Back in Houston, they’re everywhere!
