IVE ONLY RATED THIS HIGH SO KBC DOES NOT GET BAD REVIEWS

There seems to be some confusion about KBC Chalets and KBC Restaurant. They are two separate businesses with two very different managers.

We had travelled all night from Penang to get to Kapas so were very tired. We had read about KBC chalets and wanted to see what their availability was, We had asked a few other accommodation on Kapas and most where booked up or expensive for what you got. We wandered into KBC RESTAURANT and asked what rooms they had available. They said they only had air con rooms. I pointed to the A frame huts and asked if they had nothing else available. Again I was told the only room they had free was aircon for 190 MYR (which is very expensive).

AT NO POINT WAS IT MENTIONED THE A FRAME COTTAGES ARE ACTUALLY A DIFFERENT RESORT.IT WAS SPECIFICALLY WORDED TO LEAD ME TO BELIEVE THEY WERE NOT AVAILABLE.

As we were very tired and sleep deprived we just wanted to get some accommodation sorted we agreed to stay for their min of 2 nights.

After a few hours of chilling and exploring the beautiful island we could check in. It soon dawned on us that the two places where different resorts! As the rooms we had checked in where so expensive it meant we had to cut our trip short by one night!

KBC Restaurant seem to have it planned out very well to take other peoples clients. There is no sign at all on the restaurant so it really looks like its part of KBC Chalet. They do no not tell you that it is a different resort and there is no where to actually leave them a review!! I feel they are very cunning and have planned this extremely well.

As for the owner, the morning we arrived he was just walking round in a towel shouting at people in the kitchen, in the restaurant....anywhere he could shout. He seemed to love the sound of his own voice and make it obvious to everyone he was the boss.

The aircon rooms are very close to the restaurant and they play awful music from 9:00am - 10:30/11:00pm which you can hear very clearly. They also showed football games on Saturday night so we had the joy of hearing the owner shouting at the tv all night from our room. I was certainly glad we had brought ear plugs.

The owners have seemed to have forgotten they are on a tropical island and their guests have to come to relax and rest. not listen to awful dance music all day and their loud voices ALL the time.

The food in the restaurant was nice even if you would be brought other peoples meals at least three times before you would get your own.

The whole place is just not welcoming at all and I would not recommend staying here at all.

The most chilled out and relaxing five days ever. Good value for money and beautiful location. The staff are so friendly and make the place so special for everyone. The island is very simple and the beaches are beautiful. Would definitely go back.

We made a reservation over the telephone for a 40MYR room, we arrived to find that it would not be honoured and we were put in an 80MYR room! The owner told us we would be moving the next day to a cheaper room, the next day came and I went over and said 'When do you want us to move our stuff' he said 'oh,you're not moving today, you're moving tomorrow'. which we both knew to be untruthful. He was also very reluctant to have conversation and more interested in eating his breakfast, saying "there are other places to stay" with a dismissive wave. I think he did this, knowing full well it was the weekend and all the other cheap places fill up. He told us on two occasions what we wanted to hear, with no interest in following through, he also seemed not to care in the slightest about the ‘misunderstanding’.
After the second night of twice the originally agreed price he said he had to move us a midrange (65Ringit although be offered us a small discount down to 50Ringgit) room because he had a booking...

Now, Firstly, we made a booking and secondly the reason he didnt honour it was because other people extend their stay? He also told us we could only have the room for one night and then we had to leave because they were full, which I interepreted to be 'get out, we don't want you here'.

I was curious of a lot of things, such as why he was such a obnoxious, arrogant self-entitled creature but I asked an older Australian guy who was presumably part of the ownership and he also fed me lots of lies and even tried to make up a website where people make their bookings (some, upto one year in advance, apparently) Guess what! the website didn't exist! it started to remind me of when my friends worked on the punts in Cambridge and would have competitions to see who could make up the best lie to the tourists...

So, if you're still reading and you're still interested in visiting, even though they don't honour their word, lie and generally think they're better than you then you have the restaurant, staffed by a dutch couple including dreadlock misery who was rude to people and I also overheard others talking about her in a different restaurant. There are also other accounts of her behaviour on this page.

The room had no mosquito net, the shower was just a pipe pouring out from the wall, no shower head - there was a big hole in the wall, which I half expected (if anybody had acknowledged us when we left) to be blamed for.

If you still to come to this island, stay at captains longhouse - but ultimately the food options were poor in general apart from at Koko's on the beach.

The only positive I can offer is that they retain lots of travellers on a work for your bed set-up and they keep the outside areas clean, tidy and generally quite agreeable.

We've travelled a lot in Malaysia and this the worst place by miles. We've never felt so unwelcome, and been surrounded by such horrid owners - The most unrelaxing beach resort in the world!

This place is quite better than the rest. It is next to the well-known Makcik Gemuk Chalet. There are variety of menus from western to local. The chalets price range is from RM40-RM120 per night. The only setback is there are no aircondition-room. They only have fans. Don't forget to bring your mosquito repellent as there would be some mosquitos at night.
A nice place to hang out, tourists love this place! Check out the pictures.

A bunch of parasites who think of themselves that they are sooo cool! But in fact, the staff doesn't know how to run a homestay and make people feel comfortable.
The worse memory of all Malaysia, although the island in itself is very beautiful.

Beautiful island unfortunately infested by rude money seeking foreigners who are exceptionally rude to locals. I am very disappointed as we are all paying customers, Yes WE PAID, but we were so annoyed by the unfair treatment. You've pretty much ruined the day for all 8 pax of us. By the way, the restaurant cleanliness sucks, the food came out 1 hour late and no apologies whatsoever. Horrendous.
Don't bother staying here. There are plenty of better friendlier nicer resort in short walking distance with better people and service.
Will never come back here again.

To be very clear, this concerns the KBC with the restaurant, NOT the one next door with the chalets.
The island is very pretty and the snorkeling is quite good in a lot of spots. You can rent kayaks and chill at the beach. There are no roads, towns or shops, so this is really about as close to a "deserted island" as you're gonna get in Malaysia.

However, the place we stayed at, KBC, is a complete disaster. The restaurant attached to it ruins any semblance of quietness and relaxation that you may be seeking on this island. It is loud, crowded and on the weekends filled to the brim with expats and their children. I pity those who stayed in the more expensive rooms close to the restaurant, it must've been impossible to sleep.

If you are staying there you are most likely going to eat there. The service is a poor joke. Regardless of what you order, even if it is only a cheese toast, you will wait for your food for about an hour, especially in the evening. Softdrinks and water are served at room temperature. They do get served with ice though, so you get to enjoy your Coke watered down. The food quality varies depending on which of the staff is cooking, all in all it's half-decent.

Most importantly though, this place is infested with rats. Three of our bags got chewed on by rats, two of which are now completely ruined. We complained about this and asked for a discount but we only got silly remarks and snarky comments in response. The boss didn't bother to show up and none of the staff bothered to get him because he was sleeping, which is clearly more important that dealing with customer's complaints. It was 9:30am, by the way.
Their excuse was that "this is a jungle" and that we had one closed pack of peppermint gum in ONE of the three bags. It's true that they have a sign on the wall saying "no food in the rooms", but offer no further explanation. Most hostels have that sign. Most have it so you don't leave crumbs and leftovers all over the room. You cannot expect people to assume that if they have a pack of gum (which barely qualifies as normal food) in one of their bags, three of them are going to be ruined. You also can't expect people to be well-travelled and know that if you stay near a jungle, rats will come and eat their bags. I told them as much, but all they said that if people knew that the place was full of rats, noone would at stay there.

Good. Now you know. Don't stay there. This place is pathetic. It's as much because of the rats, as it is because of the rude, incompetent staff who treated us like idiots for owning a pack of gum. Don't go there, unless you wanted to buy a new suitcase anyway or if you've always wanted to have a pet rat.

Kapas Beach Chalet has the best team of staff, comprising a brilliant team of ex travelers themselves so they genuinely take care of the garden and amenities, and are attentive to your needs. KBC has Basic A-shaped huts with attached bathroom and a great porch to just read your book or admire the beach from. They brilliantly repurposed wood crates to make their ping pong table and tables for their tree-house-like lounge deck. The immediate beachfront of KBC has powder fine sands and sandier bed compared to the other sides.
Warning: This place is not for princesses who are spooked by harmless lizards and tiny frogs in the hut's toilet!

So, I stayed at the chalets. When you are facing KBC you have rooms to your right and chalets to the left. Two different buisnesses, with separate entrances and very different style. If you stay at the chalets, be aware that the rooms-buisness will be disturbing at times. I ate to the left (kbc rooms) because they had more to choose from and fans. At night it was the only almostmosquitofree place you could hang out. BUT extremely loud music all so it was not very relaxing to sit there. Very annoying and the reason I left the island earlier. Kapas is known for being quiet and relaxing but KBC rooms are doing their best to destroy that. The chalets though, where I stayed, was doing their best to create a relaxing atmosphere. I feel a bit sorry for them having so loud neighbours. At KBC chalets the loungearea is the best on the island. You can chill in hammocks hanging in between the coconut palmtrees, and there are also nice chairs and sofas to chill in. They play soft, relaxing music that takes the edge of their neighbours music and tries to run their buisness as ecofriendly as possible. You can refill your waterbottle with proper drinkingwater instead of buying new ones all the time. Chalets are superbasic. I never used the shower since it was quite poor. Beds where supercomfy. No aircon but a fan on a table that worked fine for ne since I stayed solo. Better bring your own mosquitonets, the ones they provide are apparently a bit small for the big bed. I would have preferred a bit more info on arrival on how it works there. I had to find out myself where to throw garbage and found out when I was leaving that you could do your laundry there. Also would have liked some fans in the loungearea so I could sit there at night instead of the restaurant. No basin in bathroom. So, very basic but so nice hosts.
